Short-Term Mission

Short-Term Mission

Brian M. Howell

INTERVARSITY PRESS
2012
nidottu
Over the past few decades, short-term mission trips have exploded in popularity. With easy access to affordable air travel, millions of American Christians have journeyed internationally for ministry, service and evangelism. Short-term trips are praised for involving many in global mission but also critiqued for their limitations. Despite the diversity of destinations, certain universal commonalities emerge in how mission trip participants describe their experiences: "My eyes were opened to the world's needs." "They ministered to us more than we ministered to them." "It changed my life." Anthropologist Brian Howell explores the narrative shape of short-term mission (STM). Drawing on the anthropology of tourism and pilgrimage, he shows how STM combines these elements with Christian purposes of mission to create its own distinct narrative. He provides a careful historical survey of the development of STM and then offers an in-depth ethnographic study of a particular mission trip to the Dominican Republic. He explores how participants remember and interpret their experiences, and he unpacks the implications for how North American churches understand mission, grapple with poverty and relate to the larger global church. A groundbreaking book for all who want to understand how and why American Christians undertake short-term mission.

Welcome to the 2021 edition of Valuentum's "Most Exciting Stocks " Investing is difficult but it doesn't have to be. It seems like most of what the financial media does these days is just make a lot of noise, seemingly to only confuse investors. Savers simply have a firehose of information at their fingertips from last quarter's GDP to the forward earnings multiple on S&P 500 stocks and beyond, but it's hard to know what's material and what's not. Financial advisors don't have it any easier. They have lots of resources and thousands of stocks--large and small, domestic and foreign--to choose from to build custom client portfolios to meet best interest standards, but oftentimes, there's little systematic way to compare stocks across one robust methodological framework. Where to begin? In the "Most Exciting Stocks," we include analysis on some of the strongest and most exciting stocks on the market through the lens of our systematic stock-selection framework. We hope doing so will help investors cut through a lot of the noise out there to make more informed research decisions that will lead to better investment outcomes. Which Stocks Are Highlighted? Stocks that make the cut for this publication are generally best-in-class within their respective sectors when it comes to their economic return and financial risk characteristics, or they may fit the profile of an up-and-comer that's locked into long-term secular growth trends tied to disruptive innovation. In this book, we include many companies that are simply taking their industries by storm. Here are just a few examples. Carvana (CVNA) is changing how consumers buy used cars, Roku (ROKU) is leading the streaming charge against linear TV, Teradyne's (TER) industrial robotics technology may change how workplaces operate, Beyond Meat (BYND) is striving to alter the substance of the meat products industry, Virgin Galactic (SPCE) wants to make spaceflight accessible for private individuals, while Uber (UBER) is changing how we think about getting from point A to point B through ridesharing. Penn National (PENN) is aggressively expanding into sports betting with its investment in Barstool Sports, CRISPR Therapeutics' (CRSP) revolutionary gene-editing technology may offer a path to curative solutions for the worst diseases, Wayfair (W) is disrupting how we buy home goods, ETSY (ETSY) is carving out a niche online marketplace in craft items, while Zoom Video (ZM) has come of age during the outbreak of COVID-19. Others have been around for a while. Monster Beverage (MNST) continues to innovate within the energy drink market, while Boston Beer (SAM) has found new life with its Truly brand. All of the aforementioned companies are analyzed in this publication and many more. There are more than 100 exciting companies in this book. Whether you're looking to build a diversified portfolio of the highest-quality stocks on the market, or simply seeking to augment your existing portfolio with a few solid (or exciting) ideas, the 2021 edition of the "Most Exciting Stocks" publication is an essential resource for any investor.

Moral Claims in the Age of Spectacles

Moral Claims in the Age of Spectacles

Brian M. Lowe

Palgrave Macmillan
2017
sidottu
This volume considers the rise of a new mode of creating, spreading, and encountering moral claims and ideas as they are expressed within spectacles. Brian M. Lowe explains how spectacles emerge when we are saturated with mediated representations—including pictures, texts, and videos—and exposed to television and movies and the myriad stories they tell us. The question of which moral issues gain our attention and which are neglected increasingly relates to how societal concerns are supported—or obscured—by spectacles. This project explores how this new form of moral understanding came to be. Through a series of case studies, including the use of radio and comic books; the crafting of Russian national identity through art; television and film; the evolution of human rights law through film and journalism; and the promotion of animal rights campaigns, this book unveils some of the ways in which our spectacular environment shapes moral understanding, and is in turn shaped by spectacle.

Stranger in a Stranger Land: My Six Years in Korea
At his most immodest, Brian would like to believe Bill Bryson would be able to recognize his influence on this book. It's a humorous, informative and thoughtful exploration of modern Korean culture and expat life. The book is full of personal anecdotes, secondhand stories and interesting facts, which are all interlaced with his personal narrative. Brian discusses serious topics like Korea's deeply embedded racism, its 1950's style sexism, its demanding but unproductive work culture and its highly lauded but deeply flawed education system. He also talks about lighter subjects like K-pop, the expat and Korean dating scenes, its debaucherous drinking culture, and why he thinks Seoul should be considered the party capital of Asia. By time readers are done, they'll have an understanding of how a lot of expats view Korea, what some of its most significant and peculiar cultural differences are, and some of the problems it's currently facing. This is a must read for anyone thinking of moving there.

Forgotten Gems of GatlinburgWhen the Great Smoky Mountains was dedicated a national park in 1934, tourists flocked to the area. Ray Bohanan, who owned Bohanan's Craft Shop and Cabins, stood by the road shouting, "Cabins for rent " The Frost Lodge reminded tourists of the days when a room cost five dollars. Residents at the LeConte Creek Cottages and Motel were treated to a "woodland wonderland." Parkway Motor Inn was a haven for weary drivers for decades. The Mountain View Hotel boasted a list of famous residents like Eleanor Roosevelt. Guests at the Terrace Motel remembered waters from the Roaring Fork Creek lulling them to sleep. Brian McKnight relives the simpler times and the city's finest, long-forgotten lodging.

The Death Myth

The Death Myth

Brian M Rossiter

iUniverse
2017
pokkari
Is death the end of our story, or do we go on? If life does continue after death, where and how will we live? What happens to us after we die is not only a matter of speculation, but also a matter of debate. This is particularly true within the church, and though some would like to believe that the issue has long been settled, it most certainly remains open for discussion. In The Death Myth, author and theologian Brian M. Rossiter investigates what the Bible actually says about the afterlife, and he carefully explains how an honest reflection on the traditional Christian view of death will show that this view is often misguided. This traditional view--that the deceased persist and live on as conscious immaterial souls--is a doctrine that while tenable may not cohere with scriptural truths about the nature of the soul and body, the timing of the resurrection, and the meaning of salvation. While many Christians believe that the human soul departs to either a place of bliss or a place of torment after death, few have truly evaluated the biblical teachings on the subject. More than that, the implications of our beliefs on the issue are rarely acknowledged. Can the soul live apart from the body? Do immaterial realms for the dead exist? Can ghosts or spirits communicate with the living? When these matters are deeply investigated, the conclusions may force us to reconsider everything we thought we knew about life after death and the very nature of our existence.
