Charlie is a thirty something architectural project manager living in a southern seaside town. He is divorced, hard working but has a big chip on his shoulder following the unpleasant end to his former marriage.He meets Jessica who is much younger, sexy, knows what she wants, and how to get it. They become intimate.All the time Charlie is plagued by his conscience which he calls Jacaranda Jake.He feels that by giving his conscience a name it becomes a third person and he can deal with it objectively.Life gets interesting for Charlie when he learns that Jessica is adopted. Unfortunately for him her background neatly dovetails with that of his own child who was adopted when he was much younger.At the same time life gets rather tricky for Charlie with regard to the disapproving parents of Jessica.Charlie does not panic and makes for his former northern home where he meets with the one person who can clarify matters.Having cleared the air with regard to his own child he returns home to then try to resolve that of his new partner.Interesting liaisons result in Jessica meeting her blood mother who is also Charlie's former lover.Jessica's adopted mother has an issue with her husband's friend which Charlie helps her to resolve.Charlie's liaison with Jessica provides a theatre in which all the characters concerned with their lives interact to resolve their own issues as well as providing the ingredients of a recipe for an interesting liaison between Charlie and Jessica, and her blood mother, and her adopted mother.
