The Critical Response to Chester Himes

The Critical Response to Chester Himes

The work of Chester Himes is now undergoing a critical and popular reevaluation as it gradually comes back into print after years of neglect. His protest novels from the 1940s and early 1950s, his Harlem Domestic crime books, first published in France and later released in English in the United States, and his remarkable two-volume autobiography are now gaining a wider readership through their republication. Nonetheless, the critical writings on his work remain scattered and are often difficult to obtain. This collection of reviews and essays from both popular and academic sources traces the critical response to his work from 1946 to 1996 and thus sheds light on the critical reputation of one of the most distinguished but underrated African American authors.Himes has a wide international reputation, but this reference book focuses on those essays and reviews in the English language which provide a clearer assessment of his controversial literary standing in his native country, where his reputation has been most under debate. The book includes a balanced assessment of all his work, along with an interview with Himes's brother that offers some corrective commentary on his autobiography. The volume also provides a chronology, a checklist of his writings, and a bibliography.

Scholar and diplomat Brian L. Evans gives us the first English-language biography of Chester A. Ronning (1894-1984): diplomat, politician, educator, and one of Canada's major public figures. This fascinating story depicts Ronning, the man who received many honours, and deepens readers' knowledge of Canada's post-World War II diplomacy and Canada-China relations. Ronning was an extraordinary Canadian who combined Chinese sensibility with Norwegian calm practicality and American drive. His life journey was entwined with the history of China over many decades. Based on written materials, historical documents, and many hours of interviews with Ronning, his friends, and fellow politicians, The Remarkable Chester Ronning offers both a thorough and entertaining biography and a lens through which to view international politics.
Chester's Military Heritage

Chester's Military Heritage

Adrian and Dawn L. Bridge

The ancient walled city of Chester has an illustrious military history dating back to Roman times when a fort, four times the size of anything else in Britannia, was built here. In this book, local authors Adrian and Dawn L. Bridge chronicle the city’s military history across the centuries. Beginning with the impact of the XXth Legion - Legio Vigesima Valeria Victrix - the authors go on to explore the Dark Ages, Viking, Saxon and medieval eras right through to the twentieth century, with both world wars, and beyond. Chapters focus on themes including local, national and foreign conflicts; military personalities, honours and awards; military units; and buildings and memorials. Both lesser and well-known aspects of the city’s military heritage are featured to present a balanced perspective. In addition, the authors highlight women, as well as men, on the front line and the home front. Famous Chester military heroes such as Bomber Command’s Leonard Cheshire VC and the Korean War’s Kenneth Muir VC feature with lesser-known but equally distinguished local people such as John Dolphin (Head of SOE’s Section IX during the Second World War). The Cheshire Regiment looms large in any discussion of Chester’s military units. Its origins immediately after the 1688 Glorious Revolution are discussed together with the regiment’s history up to its modern merger with the Mercian Regiment. Chester’s Military Heritage presents a broad and insightful account of this important aspect of the city’s history.
Robert of Chester’s Redaction of Euclid’s Elements, the so-called Adelard II Version
The Latin "Version II", till now attributed to Adelard of Bath, is edited here for the first time. It was the most influential Euclid text in the Latin West in the 12th and 13th centuries. As the large number of manuscripts and the numerous quotations in other scientific and philosophical texts show, it was far better known than the three Euclid translations made from the Arabic in the 12th century (Adelard of Bath, version I; Hermann of Carinthia; Gerard of Cremona). Version II became the basis of later reworkings, in which the enunciations were taken over, but new proofs supplied; the most important text of this kind is the redaction made by Campanus in the late 1250s, which became the standard Latin "Euclid" in the later Middle Ages. The introduction deals with the questions of when and by whom version II was written. Since Marshall Clagett's fundamental article (1953) it has been generally accepted that version II is one of three Euclid texts attributable to Adelard of Bath. But a comparison of the text of version II with those of versions I and III yields little or no reason to assume that Adelard was the author of version II. Version II must have been written later than version I and before version III; its author was acquainted with Euclid texts of the Boethius tradition and with two of those transmitted from Arabic, version I (almost certainly by Adelard) and the version by Hermann of Carinthia.

A Small Company of Faithful Ones: The Brandywine Guards of Chester County, Company A 1st Pennsylvania Reserves
They were not soldiers. They were farmers, laborers, teachers, lawyers, and tradesmen. Even a dentist could be counted among the ranks. In the spring of 1861, one hundred thirteen men from Chester County, Pennsylvania, calling themselves the Brandywine Guards, organized in West Chester to fight for the Union during the Civil War. As Company A, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves, these young men proved their mettle in some of the most horrific battles of the war- Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness, to name a few. Though forever linked to one another through the shared experience of war, when the dust settled, the lives they each created for themselves were many and varied. Follow this small company of faithful ones through the hardships of war and learn about the men they each became, the families they raised, and the many legacies they left behind. This is not the retelling of the Civil War, nor is it a military history- although there are elements of both. It is a very personal history. It is a story that reveals what the ordinary person is capable of when the human body and spirit are pushed to the limit and beyond. After one hundred fifty years, the Brandywine Guards are reunited once more.
