The United States is currently engaged in a military effort that has been characterized as the "long war." This study explores the concept of long war and identifies ways in which it might unfold as well as the implications for the Army and the U.S. military more generally. This report uses the generation of either "trajectories" or alternative paths in which the long war might unfold to explore the implications for the U.S. military.

This study examines the readiness reporting system in light of changes experienced by Army units in the past decade, a period in which the Army learned to adapt to emerging requirements by adding new capabilities quickly and flexibly. The current readiness reporting system captures only a portion of those changes in capabilities and has some important limitations. The study recommends ways to improve the reporting system for an adaptive Army.

The Global Response Force (GRF) is built for rapid response to unforeseen operations. This study determined access strategies for each geographic combatant command given constraints in aircraft, intermediate staging bases, operational capabilities, and other factors. Global access requires both well-established and austere staging bases; complex joint deployment concepts are necessary to ensure access.

Mass Spectrometry Basics provides authoritative yet plain-spoken explanations of the basic concepts of this powerful analytical method without elaborate mathematical derivations. The authors describe processes, applications, and the underlying science in a concise manner supported by figures and graphics to further comprehension. The text provides practical approaches to interpreting mass spectral data and step-by-step guides for identifying chemically relevant compounds. Additionally, the authors have included an extensive reference section and a quick guide to each chapter that offers immediate access to key information. This unique reference makes some of the esoteric aspects of this important area of analysis more readily comprehensible to those who deal with analytical instruments but who have not been trained in mass spectrometry. It also serves as a refresher for practicing mass spectroscopists by clarifying principles to afford a better appreciation and application of this technology.

Image Acquisition and Processing With LabVIEWä combines the general theory of image acquisition and processing, the underpinnings of LabVIEW and the NI Vision toolkit, examples of their applications, and real-world case studies in a clear, systematic, and richly illustrated presentation. Designed for LabVIEW programmers, it fills a significant gap in the technical literature by providing a general training manual for those new to National Instruments (NI) Vision application development and a reference for more experienced vision programmers. The downloadable resources contain libraries of the example images and code referenced in the text, additional technical white papers, a demonstration version of LabVIEW 6.0, and an NI IMAQ demonstration that guides you through its features. System Requirements: Using the code provided on the downloadable resources requires LabVIEW 6.1 or higher and LabVIEW Vision Toolkit 6.1 or higher. Some of the examples also require IMAQ Vision Builder 6.1 or higher, the IMAQ OCR toolkit, and IMAQ 1394 drivers.

Order and Disorder looks at the cross-cultural context and collaborative nature of Aligheiero Boetti's iconic artworks. The original, often large-scale works in his series Mappe (Maps), Tutto (Everything), and "squared word" were created in needle and thread by women in Afghanistan and in Pakistani refugee camps following the Soviet invasion in 1979, under the direction of Boetti (1940-1994).Photographs of the artworks and of Afghan women embroidering them are accompanied by examples of embroidered garments and textiles made by Afghanistan's diverse peoples. Such items reveal the country's complex demography and illustrate the kinds of embroideries that were widely traded during the years that Boetti visited.
