This book argues that the UK, as a post-modern globalised state, will require means to have influence over events and opponents that threaten the UK's interests in the 21st century, and that its means is the Royal Navy. However, unlike other studies, this research emphasizes the role of logistics, especially afloat support logistics and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. In doing so, the author rejects the current theory underpinning military operations at distance, that distance degrades capability, and posits an alternative theory, that time is the key factor, for maritime-based forces. The UK must reengage with its maritime status and maintain a maritime-based capability to protect its interests in the new maritime century as a leader within the international community. The book will be of use to scholars and researchers interested in naval history and defence policy.

Education in a Post-Metaphysical World

Education in a Post-Metaphysical World

What does it mean to say that a person has been educated? This question forms the basis of global education policy debates; from the way governments establish funding for national school systems, to the way children are treated in the classroom. Should there be a common ethical core to such polices? What kind of educational process should aboriginal groups in Labrador, Canada, have a moral right to, and should this process be different from what children in New York's boroughs have claim to? Should a school-based curriculum, such as the UK's National Curriculum, make well-being a central concern or are there other ethical dimensions to be addressed? Christopher Martin explores these questions and argues that the best way to consider them is to view education as a matter of public moral understanding. He brings together traditions of thought central to philosophy of education, such as R.S. Peters, and connects this tradition to the moral philosophy and critical theory of Jurgen Habermas, whose theory of Discourse Morality has previously been given little attention in education circles.
How to help an Addict: Identifying and understanding your addict's behavior to speed up and ease recovery
Understanding addiction is the only way to help a drug addict overcome their problem. This book helps you not only understand addicts and their behaviors, but also to identify and understand the triggers that make addicts continue to abuse drugs. Sections are divided into the four main types of addicts. At the end of each section you are given easy action steps you can use to speed up and ease the process of recovery for any addict. This book is for anyone who loves an addict. It was written by Christopher Martin, a former drug addict who was addicted to some of the worst drugs you can imagine for over a decade. He has seen things firsthand that no doctor or addiction specialist will ever know about. If you've spent your time worrying about an addict, trying to help them with rehab, detox and interventions this book is for you. The truth is, most of the things taught in colleges and in treatment centers don't work. If they did work then rehab would not be the revolving door that it is. Treatment centers and specialists are not trained to help the root causes of drug and alcohol addiction. Most time addicts come out worse off than when they started. To beat addiction you need to understand what caused it, and what continues to trigger the addict's brain - they are not always the same thing. Addicts and alcoholics tend to only listen to other addicts and alcoholics. That's because they can understand and relate to each other. This book gives you the knowledge and experience to do the same. Now you can help the addict you love because you will know more about what they are going through, and how to stop it. This is a short, easy to read action plan that dives into the nitty gritty behaviors that drug addicts try to hide. Knowing and understanding these things gives you an advantage over addiction, which will help you callout your addict and make them understand what they are doing. Often addicts do not realize the things they do until it's too late. This book helps you put an end to that vicious cycle. If you love someone you feel like you are losing to drug addiction this book is for you. There is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a positive outcome waiting just around the corner for you. Take advantage of the real-world experience this author has to offer. Don't wait until it's too late. Don't let addiction carry someone you love even further down the wrong road. Get your copy now.
Constituting Old Age in Early Modern English Literature, from Queen Elizabeth to 'King Lear'
How did Shakespeare and his contemporaries, whose works mark the last quarter century of Elizabeth I’s reign as one of the richest moments in all of English literature, regard and represent old age? Was late life seen primarily as a time of withdrawal and preparation for death, as scholars and historians have traditionally maintained? In this book, Christopher Martin examines how, contrary to received impressions, writers and thinkers of the era—working in the shadow of the kinetic, long-lived queen herself—contested such prejudicial and dismissive social attitudes. In late Tudor England, Martin argues, competing definitions of and regard for old age established a deeply conflicted frontier between external, socially “constituted” beliefs and a developing sense of an individual’s “constitution” or physical makeup, a usage that entered the language in the mid-1500s. This space was further complicated by internal divisions within the opposing camps. On one side, reverence for the elder’s authority, rooted in religious and social convention, was persistently challenged by the discontents of an ambitious younger underclass. Simultaneously, the ageing subject grounded an enduring social presence and dignity on a bodily integrity that time inevitably threatened. In a historical setting that saw both the extended reign of an aging monarch and a resulting climate of acute generational strife, this network of competition and accommodation uniquely shaped late Elizabethan literary imagination. Through fresh readings of signature works, genres, and figures, Martin redirects critical attention to this neglected aspect of early modern studies.
Spinoza’s Argument for Substance Monism

In Spinoza’s Argument for Substance Monism: Why There Is Only One Thing, Christopher Martin provides an interpretation and defense of this argument, using speculative metaphysics as a method to show how the key terms and concepts are employed and fit together. Specifically, Martin argues that (i) Spinoza’s understanding of substance and attribute departs only slightly from dominant historic notions; (ii) his definition of God in terms of attributes instead of perfections is quite helpful and (mostly) compatible with more traditional definitions; and (iii) Spinoza’s pairing of causal and conceptual relations is more intuitive than we think. Martin also shows how these essences function as causes and explains why, with Spinoza’s understanding of emanation and conceptual independence, any substance must have every attribute. These features of Spinoza’s argument explain and defend his ultimate claim that God/Nature is the only substantial being in existence. This book demonstrates how approachable and compelling Spinoza’s argument is and illustrates the practice and potential of speculative metaphysics for specialists and non-specialists alike.
