Beyond Anitkabir: The Funerary Architecture of Atatürk
There have been five different settings that at one time or another have contained the dead body of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, organizer of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Narrating the story of these different architectural constructions - the bedroom in Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul, where he died; a temporary catafalque in this same palace; his funeral stage in Turkey’s new capital Ankara; a temporary tomb in the Ankara Ethnographic Museum; and his permanent and monumental mausoleum in Ankara, known in Turkish as ’Anitkabir’ (Memorial Tomb) - this book also describes and interprets the movement of Atatürk’s body through the cities of Istanbul and Ankara and also the nation of Turkey to reach these destinations. It examines how each one of these locations - accidental, designed, temporary, permanent - has contributed in its own way to the construction of a Turkish national memory about Atatürk. Lastly, the two permanent constructions - the Dolmabahçe Palace bedroom and Anitkabir - have changed in many ways since their first appearance in order to maintain this national memory. These changes are exposed to reveal a dynamic, rather than dull, impression of funerary architecture.

Reframing Berlin

Reframing Berlin is about how architecture and the built environment can reveal the memory of a city, an urban memory, through its transformation and consistency over time by means of ‘urban strategies’, which have developed throughout history as cities have adjusted to numerous political, religious, economic and societal changes. These strategies are organised on a ‘memory spectrum’, which range from demolition to memorialisation. It reveals the complicated relationship between urban strategies and their influence on memory-making in the context of Berlin since 1895, with the help of film locations. It utilises cinematic representations of locations as an audio-visual archive to provide a deeper analysis of the issues brought up by strategies and case studies in relation to memory-making. Foreword by Kathleen James-Chakraborty A new volume in the Mediated Cities series from Intellect

Shakespeare’s Musical Imagery

Shakespeare’s Musical Imagery

Christopher R. Wilson

Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd.

Music pervades Shakespeare's work. In addition to vocal songs and numerous instrumental cues there are thousands of references to music throughout the plays and many of the poems. This book discusses Shakespeare's musical imagery according to categories defined by occurrence in the plays and poems. In turn, these categories depend on their early modern usage and significance. Thus, instruments such as lute and viol deserve special attention just as Renaissance ideas relating to musical philosophy and pedagogical theory need contextual explanation. The objective is to locate Shakespeare's musical imagery, reference and metaphor in its immediate context in a play or poem and explain its meaning. Discussion and explanation of the musical imagery suggests a range of possible dramatic and poetic purposes these musical references serve.

Apoptosis

Apoptosis

pokkari
The concept of programmed cell death, or apoptosis, has exploded into a major scientific field of interest for cell biologists, oncologists, and many other biomedical researchers. Apoptosis occurs throughout the lifetime of most multicellular organisms. During development, for example, the selective death of cells is vital to remove tissue between the digits to produce fingers and toes. Apoptosis is also necessary to destroy cells that represent a threat to the integrity of the organism, for example cells infected by a virus. In many cancers the genes regulating apoptosis are defective, producing immortal, continuously proliferating cells. This book, first published in 2004, discusses the philosophical and technical difficulties in defining the moment of death for a cell, as well as the biological implications and significance of programmed cell death. Recent developments in the genetic control and interacting gene networks associated with apoptosis are presented. The book is written for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, and is highly illustrated to aid understanding.

Nahant, Massachusetts, 12 miles north of Boston, consists of two islands connected to the mainland by a causeway. Small in land area--1.2 square miles--it has a big history. This book examines Nahant thematically in over 200 images. East Point is seen as the site of an 1823 resort hotel and later a distinguished senator's residence. It was also used as a military installation and is currently an educational facility and public park. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow describes, in his own words, his 25 years in Nahant. The Samuel Hammond family is shown as a representative of the wealthy Bostonians who enjoyed Nahant as a summer colony. Many images illustrate full-time residents who invested their lives here participating in a rich civic life. Work, play, and entertainment are documented. Social issues, such as women's suffrage, were confronted. Current issues, like the Black Lives Matter movement, continue to draw attention.

'He seems to have laboured under an almost child-like misapprehension about the size of his world. Had greatness not been thrust upon him, he might have lived a life of great harmlessness'The reign of Edward II was a succession of disasters. Inept in war, and in thrall to favourites, most notably the young nobleman Piers Gaveston, he preferred drinking, driving carts and rowing boats to the tedium of government. After twenty ruinous years, he was imprisoned and murdered. This remarkable book gives a glimpse into the abyss: the terrors of kingship.

Learning to Live with Crime

Learning to Live with Crime

Christopher P Wilson

Ohio State University Press

pokkari
Since the mid-1960s, the war on crime has reshaped public attitudes about state authority, criminal behavior, and the responsibilities of citizenship. But how have American writers grappled with these changes? What happens when a journalist approaches the workings of organized crime not through its legendary Godfathers but through a workaday, low-level figure who informs on his mob? Why is it that interrogation scenes have become so central to prime-time police dramas of late? What is behind writers' recent fascination with "cold case" homicides, with private security, or with prisons? In Learning to Live with Crime, Christopher P. Wilson examines this war on crime and how it has made its way into cultural representation and public consciousness. Under the sway of neoconservative approaches to criminal justice and public safety, Americans have been urged to see crime as an inevitable risk of modern living and to accept ever more aggressive approaches to policing, private security, and punishment. The idea has been not simply to fight crime but to manage its risks; to inculcate personal vigilance in citizens; and to incorporate criminals' knowledge through informants and intelligence gathering. At its most scandalous, this study suggests, contemporary law enforcement has even come to mimic crime's own operations.
Renewal Apologetics

Renewal Apologetics

Why do you believe in God? Why do you believe in the Bible? Why do you believe in miracles? These are questions that Christians are often asked by sceptics. The field of apologetics attempts to provide rational answers to these and other questions. Unfortunately, apologetical answers to these questions are often abstract and philosophical. However, the Christian apologist/evangelist has a much more powerful argument in their arsenal: the argument from miracles. Miracles are the original Christian apologetic. It was through the witnessing of miracles that Christianity was originally spread. By applying modern tools of philosophical inquiry and scientific methodology, Wilson is able to establish a core set of miracles which defy naturalistic explanations and strongly point toward occurrences of Special Divine Action (SDA). However, once these occurrences are proven to be genuine miracles, several questions remain. Why does God sometimes perform miracles? Why does he often answer no? How do these random acts fit into his overall plans of redemption? By answering these and other questions, Wilson develops a comprehensive apologetic for both Christianity in general and the Renewal Movement in particular.

Since the publication of the first edition of Guide to the Flowers of Western China in 2011, there have been great strides in knowledge of the flora of China through international collaboration. Many plants included in the first edition have been revisited in the wild, while areas hitherto inaccessible have opened up, if sometimes only temporarily. Great advances in systematic botany have occurred since the publication of the first edition, particularly with widespread availability of rapid DNA analysis. The result of this has been an influx of new photographs and data, and the need for a second edition of Guide to the Flowers of Western China.
