Joyce and Geometry

Joyce and Geometry

Ciaran McMorran

In a paradigm shift away from classical understandings of geometry, nineteenth-century mathematicians developed new systems that featured surprising concepts such as the idea that parallel lines can curve and intersect. Providing evidence to confirm much that has largely been speculation, Joyce and Geometry reveals the full extent to which the modernist writer James Joyce was influenced by the radical theories of non-Euclidean geometry. Through close readings of Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and Joyce's notebooks, Ciaran McMorran demonstrates that Joyce's experiments with nonlinearity stem from a fascination with these new mathematical concepts. He highlights the maze-like patterns traced by Joyce's characters as they wander Dublin's streets; he explores recurring motifs such as the topography of the Earth's curved surface and time as the fourth dimension of space; and he investigates in detail the enormous influence of Giordano Bruno, Henri Poincaré, and other writers who were critical of the Euclidean tradition. Arguing that Joyce's obsession with measuring and mapping space throughout his works encapsulates a modern crisis between geometric and linguistic modes of representation, McMorran delves into a major theme in Joyce's work that has not been fully explored until now. Negotiated agreements play a critical role in setting the conditions under which resource development occurs on Indigenous land. Our understanding of what determines the outcomes of negotiations between Indigenous peoples and commercial interests is very limited. With over two decades experience with Indigenous organisations and communities, Ciaran O’Faircheallaigh's book offers the first systematic analysis of agreement outcomes and the factors that shape them, based on evaluative criteria developed especially for this study; on an analysis of 45 negotiations between Aboriginal peoples and mining companies across all of Australia’s major resource-producing regions; and on detailed case studies of four negotiations in Australia and Canada.

‘I write to try to see you as you were, or what you have become. You left no forwarding address: that was part of your intention. For when we wrote those letters to each other all those years ago, we wrote as much for ourselves as for each other.’ More than twenty years after the end of their love affair, Gabriel receives a cryptic postcard from old flame Nina. It is the first of thirteen cards from her, each one provoking a series of reveries about their life together in 1980s Belfast. The Pen Friend is, however, much more than a love story. As Gabriel teases out the significance of the cards, his reveries develop into richly textured meditations on writing, memory, spiritualism and surveillance. The result is an intricate web of fact and fiction – moving easily between such varied subjects as the Troubles, Esperanto and John Lavery – a strange and wonderful novel by one of our finest Irish writers. If you enjoyed The Pen Friend, you might also enjoy Ciaran Carson’s Exchange Place, a brilliant thriller set in Paris and Belfast.

Last Night's Fun: A Book about Irish Traditional Music

Ciaran Carson

"Last Night's Fun's" is a sparking celebration of music and life that is itself a literary performance of the highest order. Carson's inspired jumble of recording history, poetry, tall tales, and polemic captures the sound and vigor of a ruthlessly unsentimental music. "Last Night's Fun" is remarkable for its liveliness, honesty, scholarship, and spontaneous joy; certainly there has never been a book about Irish music like this one, and few books ever written anywhere about the experience of music can compare with it.

Belfast Confetti, Ciaran Carson's third book of poetry, weaves together in a carefully sequenced volume prose pieces, long poems, lyrics, and haiku. His subjects include the permeable boundaries of Belfast neighborhoods, of memory, of public and private fear, and, indeed, of the forms of language and art. Carson finds unexpected uses--constructive and destructive--of the building rubble of Belfast history. Rich in lore of place, these innovative and vividly fresh poems draw deeply on traditions--oral, local, and literary.

It is the willingness and ability to Interrupt; Self, Systems, Prospects and Clients. Business owners, managers and sales staff who have something of value and the ability to interrupt themselves and others will achieve their goals. This book positions & teaches this principle as the keystone philosophy to new business development & growth.

"I was fifteen years old in September 1991 and I thought I knew everything. I thought the worst thing that could ever happen to you was to have your heart broken. I thought there was nothing that could hurt you more. I was so wrong, and so right, but I wouldn't know exactly how much, until the weekend I spent with that guy we all called Mr Mason."Marian Collins is fifteen years years old, with the greatest friends, a boy who adores her, and two years left before school is over and she can be free to do whatever she wants with her life. Her dad is an absolute dote, her mum is an awful pain, and her nemesis is Tara Meaney. Life is wonderfully normal, on the first day of Fifth Year at Salesian's College; apart from the new English teacher, who it turns out is an English teacher in more ways than one. Marian doesn't know it yet, but Mr Mason is about to be the centre of three crazy days that will change her whole future. So much so, that it will be years before she feels wonderfully normal again.Returning to the nostalgic Limerick universe he started with The Boys of Summer, West's latest novel is funny, heartbreaking, uplifting, tense, and touching. You'll fall in love with his richly drawn characters; you'll cry for their losses, and punch the air at their triumphs. One thing is for sure - they'll stay with you long after the final page.

During the 1980s Britain became one of the world's most market-oriented economies, an approach which resulted in three severe recessions and a deepening degree of inequality. This book argues that a rebalancing of the economy will remain elusive until proactive policies are implemented at the corporate and industrial level.

Are we really being ourselves on social media? Can we benefit from connecting with people we barely know online? Why do some people overshare on social networking sites? The Psychology of Social Media explores how so much of our everyday lives is played out online, and how this can impact our identity, wellbeing and relationships. It looks at how our online profiles, connections, status updates and sharing of photographs can be a way to express ourselves and form connections, but also highlights the pitfalls of social media including privacy issues. From FOMO to fraping, and from subtweeting to selfies, The Psychology of Social Media shows how social media has developed a whole new world of communication, and for better or worse is likely to continue to be an essential part of how we understand our selves.

Mining and Development

Mining and Development

Ciaran O'Faircheallaigh

Routledge

sidottu
This book, first published in 1984, examines the economics and political issues raised by foreign investment in mineral development. It is an attempt to identify, as far as possible, what occurs in and between countries when foreign investments are made in mineral development, concentrating on two main themes: on the nature of the transactions which constitute the process of foreign investment on the physical level – money and instruments of credit, objects, information and people as they cross national boundaries – and on the nature of the relationships which are created between foreign investors and governments in the countries where the investments are made. The author argues that the nature of physical transactions plays a crucial role in determining the character of host country-foreign investor relations, and the policies and attitudes adopted by host country authorities exercise an important influence, in turn, on the physical effects of foreign investments. As such, the book constitutes a comprehensive overview of the economic and political factors involved in mining and its development.
