Emphasizing leadership principles and practices, Antipatterns: Managing Software Organizations and People, Second Edition catalogs 49 business practices that are often precursors to failure. This updated edition of a bestseller not only illustrates bad management approaches, but also covers the bad work environments and cultural traits commonly found in IT, software development, and other business domains. For each antipattern, it describes the situation and symptoms, gives examples, and offers a refactoring solution. The authors, graduate faculty at Penn State University, avoid an overly scholarly style and infuse the text with entertaining sidebars, cartoons, stories, and jokes. They provide names for the antipatterns that are visual, humorous, and memorable. Using real-world anecdotes, they illustrate key concepts in an engaging manner. This updated edition sheds light on new management and environmental antipattems and includes a new chapter, six updated chapters, and new discussion questions. Topics covered include leadership principles, environmental antipatterns, group patterns, management antipatterns, and team leadership.Following introductory material on management theory and human behavior, the text catalogs the full range of management, cultural, and environmental antipatterns. It includes thought-provoking exercises that each describe a situation, ask which antipatterns are present, and explain how to refactor the situation. It provides time-tested advice to help you overcome bad practices through successful interaction with your clients, customers, peers, supervisors, and subordinates.

First Generation Scottish DMUs

First Generation Scottish DMUs

From the mid-1950s diesel multiple units began to appear in Scotland, firstly on the main line between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street and later on many secondary lines. More DMU units began to appear from the early 1960s with the gradual withdrawal of steam locomotives. Possibly the ultimate in the DMU development was the InterCity DMU, later numbered as Class 126. With the expanding motorway network, many branch lines could not be saved and the Beeching axe fell on many of them. The first generation of Scottish DMU fleets never established the huge following and interest that the diesel and electric locos did. Here, Colin J. Howat covers virtually the whole of Scotland and encompasses locations from Arbroath in the north to just south of the border in Carlisle. This book covers diesel multiple units from Metro-Cammell Class 101s up to and including Swindon InterCity Class 126s.

Second Generation DMUs in Scotland covers the modern diesel multiple units introduced by BR from 1981. It features locations from across Scotland, and also looks at Carlisle. This book covers units from the experimental Class 140s, introduced in 1981, to contemporary examples including Class 185s still in use with TransPennine Express. Possibly the best unit introduced to Scotland are the Class 156 units based at Corkerhill depot in Glasgow. These units can be found working from Newcastle to Mallaig. The new generation of DMU fleets can go faster and travel further and have generated a huge following. Here, Colin J. Howat combines previously unseen historical black-and-white photography with modern digital examples to tell their story.
Campbell's Atlas of Oil and Gas Depletion

Campbell's Atlas of Oil and Gas Depletion

Campbell's Atlas of Oil and Gas Depletion, Second Edition, is the product of a half-century of critical analysis and updating of data on the status of oil and gas depletion by country, region and the world as a whole. Separate analyses of conventional and non-conventional oil and gas, which are depleting at different rates and costs, show when these critical energy sources peak and decline. The Atlas also summarizes the history and political circumstances of each country to assess the impact on oil and gas production and reserves. It contrasts the First Half of the Oil Age, which saw the rapid expansion of the world economy, allowing the population to grow six-fold, with the Second Half, which will witness a general contraction as these easy, high-density energy supplies dwindle. The transition threatens to be a time of great economic, financial and political tensions. The Atlas, which has been compiled and updated by prominent geologist, former oil company executive, and oil analyst Colin Campbell since the 1960s, addresses the need for a reliable and comprehensive database on a subject essential to governments, industry, academia, and the population as a whole as we attempt to adapt to these critically changing circumstances.

This is the third volume of the comprehensive series on Struc ture and Function of the Circulation, edited by Dr. Colin J. Schwartz with the collaboration of Nicholas T. Werthessen and Stewart Wolf. Dr. Schwartz, an authority on vascular structure and function and a respected investigator in this field for many years, selected as authors for the chapters an outstanding group of scientists from various parts of the world. As indicated in the Preface, the impetus for this broad treat ise evolved from the scientific sessions of three interdisciplinary international conferences held in Lindau in 1970, in Heidelberg in 1973, and Totts Gap, Pennsylvania, in 1976 as well as from numerous informal discussions. The subjects dealt with in these three volumes range from the roots of our knowledge in ancient history to the most recent inform ation on contractile proteins of smooth muscle cells. The structure, distribution, and dynamics of arteries, veins, and lymphatics are described in chapters on the systemic circulation as well as that of the heart, the vessels themselves, the brain, nerves, and viscera. Descriptions of ultrastructure, histochemistry, metabolism, and func tion of endothelium and of vascular smooth muscle and of vascular changes in aging are all included in the vast scope of this under taking.

The Book of Acts in the Setting of Hellenistic History
The Acts of the Apostles is the New Testament book that contains the most obvious ties to its cultural and historical milieu. Yet, until very recently, the trend has been for 20th-century authors to bypass discussion of the relation of Acts to the world and history around it. In this book, Colin Hemer examines various strands of interlocking data, ranging from the epistles of Paul to records of the corn fleet that sailed from Alexandria. The wealth of new literary, epigraphic, and papyrological data brings fresh light to numerous details as well as to the central question of Luke’s conception of Paul’s visit to Jerusalem. The result is a broader understanding of the Hellenistic world in general and a greater appreciation for Acts as a coherent and consistent product of its day. Originally published by J. C. B. Mohr in 1989.
The Priesthood of Some Believers

The author examines the Christian literature of the first three centuries for evidence of the development both of the special priesthood of the ordained and the general priesthood of all believers. He demonstrates that the development of the special priesthood was closely linked to the emerging division between the clergy and the laity, and that these developments harmed the expression of the general priesthood. 'The Priesthood of Some Believers' is the only detailed and comprehensive study of the way the development of the special priesthood harmed that of the general priesthood.
