Understanding the Linux Kernel

Understanding the Linux Kernel

Daniel P. Bovet

O'Reilly Media, Inc, USA
2005

In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn't kept waiting any longer than necessary for the relatively slow disks. The third edition of Understanding the Linux Kernel takes you on a guided tour of the most significant data structures, algorithms, and programming tricks used in the kernel. Probing beyond superficial features, the authors offer valuable insights to people who want to know how things really work inside their machine. Important Intel-specific features are discussed. Relevant segments of code are dissected line by line. But the book covers more than just the functioning of the code; it explains the theoretical underpinnings of why Linux does things the way it does. This edition of the book covers Version 2.6 , which has seen significant changes to nearly every kernel subsystem, particularly in the areas of memory management and block devices. The book focuses on the following topics: * Memory management, including file buffering, process swapping, and Direct memory Access (DMA) * The Virtual Filesystem layer and the Second and Third Extended Filesystems * Process creation and scheduling * Signals, interrupts, and the essential interfaces to device drivers * Timing * Synchronization within the kernel * Interprocess Communication (IPC) * Program execution Understanding the Linux Kernel will acquaint you with all the inner workings of Linux, but it's more than just an academic exercise. You'll learn what conditions bring out Linux's best performance, and you'll see how it meets the challenge of providing good system response during process scheduling, file access, and memory management in a wide variety of environments. This book will help you make the most of your Linux system.

The White Terror and the Political Reaction after Waterloo

The White Terror and the Political Reaction after Waterloo

Daniel P. Resnick

In this first monograph on the White Terror since Ernest Daudet wrote on the subject in 1878, Daniel Resnick presents the only documented account of the magnitude of the political reaction of 1815–16 in France. By means of a statistical record of police arrests and judicial convictions, he demonstrates the nature, extent, and impact on French political history of the widespread repression that grew out of the royalist crusade to extirpate any trace of Napoleonic influences. The calculated policy of intimidation pursued by the royalists, the author argues, engendered the political reflexes that were to prove fatal to the House of Bourbon.

One spectacular day is all that was needed... On December 21, 2012, something extraordinary happened. A thing that general society did not believe in or see coming. There are the chosen ones with the special blood of the "Old Ones," then there is the rest of the population with little faith that thinks those chosen Ones are crazy and discredit them. But little does Society know, the infinite possibilities of truth beyond their wildest imagination was about to take place right before them, then it unfolds... One Eerie event sets the stage in this sci-fi, fantasy, love triangle, drama. The planets of our Solar System aligns which brings many realms together, awakening and calling forth a new wave of super heroes and super villains. This rare alignment causes the TATTOOO realm to come closest to our realm, bringing the secrets of the TATTOOO to surface that have been hidden and locked away for millennia, reigning down on a select few giving them TATTOOO powers. Our hero of the story is a man named Keen, he is a good looking twenty-four years old white male with blue eyes that lives a pretty basic life. Keen thinks that he is a "normal" man in society with no real talent except Martial Arts. He works a nine to five job at a meat factory, has a pretty basic studio apartment, and lives the life of a bachelor. Then we have our seemingly antagonist of the story, his name is Darius but the streets know him as D-Smash, and that is what he prefers to be called. He is a twenty-four years old good looking African American male that shares many characteristics of Keen. But D-Smash runs a shady business tied with a Italian Mob family known as the Tambino family. Through his ties with this family, D-Smash manages to become rich and obtain three businesses of his own. D-Smash opens up a A TATTOOO shop well known as Da TATTOOO Shrine, a restaurant, and buys out a boxing gym that his favorite boxer used to box in, the man that was born in Brooklyn, and became the best and most famous boxer in the world. Because of these two men sharing characteristics, both having birth TATTOOOs, and both being rejected by society, destiny brings these two unique men together after the planets align. One fateful day deep in the the dangerous streets of New York City, Keen being late on his way to work minding his own business, hears a woman screams from a nearby alley. He does the one thing anyone with a hero minded complex would do, and goes over to see if he can help. Sure enough, Keen sees a gunner guy threatening a woman's life by holding a gun up to her head. So Keen takes care of business, he beats up the gunner guy through sheer luck by waking up his TATTOOO powers, using them for the first time. Keen TATTOOO powers awakens because of the gunner guy putting him in a near death situation. After this amazing and fortunate event, Keen finds himself falling for the woman he saves, not knowing that D-Smash too was in love with her, caught in a love triangle. To make matters worse, Keen also finds out that the gunner guy he beats up was one of D-Smash's henchmen. Now that the paths of these two men's destines are formed and intertwined, they soon realize that they both received the same powers and share the same secret. After finding out knowledge about each other, Keen and D-Smash duke it out throughout the city of New York on multiple occasions, three times to be exact. But each time they fight, they discover more about themselves and their TATTOOO powers.

This is a wonderful adventure tale. A child abandons an abusive home and heads for the hills, as they used to say in a simpler time. The child would not survive long in the wild were it not for the vast and elemental friend who chooses to provide support. The wind comes to the child's aid and all is well for some time, however Jan's ability to communicate with the wind and call upon it draws the attentions of certain elements of the government, the military, and a host of unknown forces, all of which have their reasons for wanting to understand how Jan communicates and seemingly commands an elemental force of such magnitude and power. When Jan is befriended by Mr. Fish, an ordinary appearing native American, the adventure takes an ominous turn as the pair is hunted. Only ancient and wholly mystical methods allow them to escape to a place and time beyond human knowledge. Jan comes of age there and all is well until the wind comes, in terrible pain, calling for help. Jan and Mr. Fish go back to the civilization they had escaped from only to be pursued by the same malevolent forces staging a show down between the animal kingdom and a humanity gone mad. A desperate battle for the freedom of the wind, for liberty brings about an end to the violence of warfare and the dawn of a new world.

Science fiction has always been a favorite form of prose. When I was young, I'd buy used paperbacks for a nickel or dime at bookstores or flea markets and was greatly entertained for hours on end. I used to stack them on my bookshelves as one did tape cassettes with their titles visible. I would then select a favorite to enjoy discovering ever more as I did so. This collection of stories, and psalms, portray the range of influences, which affected my writing. I grew up watching the Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Star Trek, and One Step Beyond. I read authors such as Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, A.E. Van Vogt, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and a great number of Sci-Fi anthologies. Then too, I enjoyed H.P. Lovecraft, Poe and works such as Paradise Lost, The Odessy, Frankenstein, and Grimm's Fairy Tales. I also read a great deal of poetry over the years. Altogether, in this volume, there is evidence for each of those influences. In it you'll hear those voices, behold such visions and virtual vistas as they come to life. This selection of bizarre tales takes one from the beginning of time to its end and beyond. Yes, there may be stranger things yet to come, as well as the time to tell of them, but I hope this collection will be memorable, for all that. May you grok and enjoy
The Revival of Political Hesychasm in Contemporary Orthodox Thought
The Revival of Political Hesychasm in Contemporary Orthodox Thought focuses on the retrieval of the spiritual theology of the Orthodox Church and how it is being used in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to develop a political ideology that allows for the creation of a unique Eastern Orthodox identity, which is against western globalization. The author approaches the phenomenon from the standpoint of constructivism as understood in the social science tradition of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann. The author argues in the text that the construction of this unique Orthodox identity, especially by the Greek theologians John S. Romanides and Christos Yannaras, is similar to what is occurring in other religious traditions around the world. Additionally, the author examines the retrieval of the hesychastic tradition of the Orthodox Church using a genealogical approach. Here the thought of the Russian emigration, especially the thought of Georges Florovsky, is of primary importance. The text concludes with an appraisal of this revival in the Orthodox world and its ecumenical possibilities for a pluralistic world.

From such transgressions against society as adultery, heresy and espionage, from the primitive snake pit to sophisticated methods of brainwashing, there have been literally thousands of techniques devised to distort both the body and the mind and to satisfy the sadistic needs of those who command, perform and witness human torture. Author Daniel P Mannix examines every aspect of torture: the professional torturers, many of them history's most famous men and women; their theories and techniques; the role torture has played in history; and the refinements brought to the practice of torture by individual fanatics, religious groups, the military and entire cultures.
Cognitive Work Analysis: Coping with Complexity

Cognitive Work Analysis: Coping with Complexity

'Complex sociotechnical systems' are systems made up of numerous interacting parts, both human and non-human, operating in dynamic, ambiguous and safety critical domains. Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) is a structured framework specifically developed for considering the development and analysis of these complex socio-technical systems. Unlike many human factors approaches, CWA does not focus on how human-system interaction should proceed (normative modelling) or how human-system interaction currently works (descriptive modelling). Instead, through a focus on constraints, it develops a model of how work can be conducted within a given work domain, without explicitly identifying specific sequences of actions (formative modelling). The framework leads the analyst to consider the environment the task takes place within, and the effect of the imposed constraints on the way work can be conducted. It provides guidance through the process of answering the questions of why the system exists, what activities can be conducted within the domain as well as how these activities can be achieved, and who can perform them. The first part of the book contains a comprehensive description of CWA, introducing it to the uninitiated. It then presents a number of applications in complex military domains to explore and develop the benefits of CWA. Unlike much of the previous literature, particular attention is placed on exploring the CWA framework in its entirety. This holistic approach focuses on the system environment, the activity that takes place within it, the strategies used to conduct this activity, the way in which the constituent parts of the system (both human and non-human) interact and the behaviour required. Each stage of this analysis identifies the constraints governing the system; it is contended that through this holistic understanding of constraints, recommendations can be made for the design of system interaction; increasing the ability of users to cope with unanticipated, unexpected situations. This book discusses the applicability of the approach in system analysis, development and evaluation. It provides process to what was previously a loosely defined framework.
