BOOK 1 OF THE CONTINUUM (Maiden voyage of the Armageddon) The Armageddon has the huge-ship, sweeping panorama, feeling of Battlestar Galactica, as well as the tense bridge scenes which became the hallmark of Star Trek. However, unlike either of those works. The Armageddon gives us as much a view of the aliens as it does the humans. Indeed, you just might come away from this book liking the Hykonian Admiral, Algol. If so, it's not an accident - there's no rule that only humans can be heroes.

Since the publication of the first edition of this book, advances in algorithms, logic and software tools have transformed the field of data fusion. The latest edition covers these areas as well as smart agents, human computer interaction, cognitive aides to analysis and data system fusion control. Besides aiding you in selecting the appropriate algorithm for implementing a data fusion system, this book guides you through the process of determining the trade-offs among competing data fusion algorithms, selecting commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) tools, and understanding when data fusion improves systems processing. Completely new chapters in this second edition explain data fusion system control, DARPA's recently developed TRIP model, and the latest applications of data fusion in data warehousing and medical equipment, as well as defence systems.

Come Retribution

Come Retribution

Many Confederates believed that Abraham Lincoln himself was the sponsor of the Union army's heavy destruction of the South. With John Wilkes Booth as its agent, the Confederate Secret Service devised a plan of retribution--to seize President Lincoln, hold him hostage, and bring the war-weary North to capitulation. The code word for this stratagem was ""Come Retribution."" But when Booth was stymied, the Secret Service took another course. They conspired to bomb the White House during a conference of senior Union officials. But this plot also failed. Next, the Confederates devised for Confederate forces to abandon Richmond and Petersburg and to link up with General Joseph E. Johnston in the South before General Grant's forces were prepared to move. This plan was thwarted, however, when Grant took Richmond. By April 9, 1865, Lee was forced to surrender. Yet the willful, ardent Booth, smarting from the South's loss of the war, took decisive action at Ford's Theater during that spring night in 1865. Investigating the assassination from their perspective as career intelligence officers, William A. Tidwell and David Winfred Gaddy, joined by James O. Hall, one of the leading authorities on the assassination, find and follow the clues, interpret the clandestine evidence, and draw well-founded conclusions. They are the first to explore the Confederate Secret Service's link to the death of Lincoln. In Come Retribution, originally published in 1988 and now available again in a paperback edition, they offer startling insights and give a new direction to the well-known and often-told story of Lincoln and Booth. ""The facts presented and the inferences drawn are provocative,"" said Nathan Miller in The Baltimore Sun. ""Every account of the Lincoln assassination published in the future will have to take account of the arguments presented in this book.

The United States finds itself at a profound inflection point. Since World War II, its national security threats have tended to accumulate rather than diminish. While U.S. military capabilities remain more advanced than that of any other state, an increasingly interconnected global economy has allowed potential adversaries to shrink the technological lead currently enjoyed by America's Armed Forces. Additionally, U.S. economic power has declined relative to that of other nations, steadily narrowing its defense spending advantage. Meanwhile, increasing Federal budget austerity has focused Congress upon reigning in defense costs, particularly in the personnel realm. The authors of this monograph believe that talent management-the science of creating a higher performing, more productive, and more satisfied workforce-is critical to dealing with these national security challenges. They argue that, instead of making across-the-board cuts to service member pay and benefits...

The human face is perhaps the most familiar and easily recognized object in the world, yet both its three-dimensional shape and its two-dimensional images are complex and hard to characterize. This book develops the vocabulary of ridges and parabolic curves, of illumination eigenfaces and elastic warpings for describing the perceptually salient features of a face and its images. The book also explores the underlying mathematics and applies these mathematical techniques to the computer vision problem of face recognition, using both optical and range images.

The definitive book on what is known about the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene archaeological record in the Southeast The 1996 benchmark volume The Paleoindian and Early Archaic Southeast, edited by David G. Anderson and Kenneth E. Sassaman, was the first study to summarize what was known of the peoples who lived in the Southeast when ice sheets covered the northern part of the continent and mammals such as mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and ground sloths roamed the landscape. The American Southeast at the End of the Ice Age provides an updated, definitive synthesis of current archaeological research gleaned from an array of experts in the region. It is organized in three parts: state records, the regional perspective, and reflections and future directions. Chapters survey a diversity of topics including the distribution of the earliest archaeological sites in the region, chipped-stone tool technology, the expanding role of submerged archaeology, hunter-gatherer lifeways, past climate changes and the extinction of megafauna on the transitional landscape, and evidence of demographic changes at the end of the Ice Age. Discussion of the ethical responsibilities regarding the use of private collections and the relationship of archaeologists and the avocational community, insight from outside the Southeast, and considerations for future research round out the volume.
Verbal Art and Verbal Science

Verbal Art and Verbal Science

Bloomsbury Academic

Over the course of history, humankind has relied on the power of language to impose regularities on experience and bring "the environment more within our power to control." Professor M.A.K. Halliday goes on to refers to this conceptual shifting as "the Knight's move in language." In this joint work, developed in collaboration with the late Professor Ruqaiya Hasan and edited by Professor Jonathan J. Webster, metaphor is used to understand how language manipulates and creates our reality in very real and powerful ways. Whether it is the "art" in verbal art or the "science” in verbal science, through the metaphor-making potential available in language what is being crafted are hypotheses about the world we experience. The semiogenic power of language is so great that it enables us to define "the very basic experience of being human". Halliday adopts Mukarovsky's term "deautomatization" to interpret the grammar in front of you in ways that go beyond its direct relational function. So much scientific theory would not be possible without this semiogenic potential. It is the ability to reconstrue our commonsense version of events into a metaphorical world where things can be observed, investigated and explained. This book highlights the central importance of grammatical metaphor and realigns the connections between the upper strata of meaning and the strata below lexicogrammar.

The past 20 years have witnessed a change in the study of the prehistory and history of the native peoples of the American South. This paradigm shift is the bridging of prehistory and history to fashion a seamless social history that includes not only the 16th-century Late Mississippian period and the 18th-century colonial period but also the largely forgotten - and critically important - century in between. The shift is in part methodological, for it involves combining methods from anthropology, history, and archaeology. It is also conceptual and theoretical, employing historical and archaeological data to reconstruct broad patterns of history - not just political history with Native Americans as a backdrop, nor simply an archaeology with added historical specificity, but a true social history of the Southeastern Indians, spanning their entire existence in the American South. The scholarship underlying this shift comes from many directions, but much of the groundwork can be attributed to Charles Hudson. The papers in this volume were contributed by Hudson's colleagues and former students (many now leading scholars themselves) in his honor. The assumption linking these papers is that of a historical transformation between Mississippian societies and the Indian societies of the historic era that requires explanation and critical analysis. In all of the chapters, the legacy of Hudson's work is evident. Anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians are storming the bridge that connects prehistory and history in a manner unimaginable 20 years ago. While there remains much work to do on the path toward understanding this transformation and constructing a complete social history of the Southeastern Indians, the work of Charles Hudson and his colleagues have shown the way.
