Democracy and the Police

Democracy and the Police

David Alan Sklansky

Everyone is for "democratic policing"; everyone is against a "police state." But what do those terms mean, and what should they mean? The first half of this book traces the connections between the changing conceptions of American democracy over the past half-century and the roughly contemporaneous shifts in ideas about the police—linking, on the one hand, the downfall of democratic pluralism and the growing popularity of participatory and deliberative democracy with, on the other hand, the shift away from the post-war model of professional law enforcement and the movement toward a new orthodoxy of community policing. The second half of the book explores how a richer set of ideas about policing might change our thinking about a range of problems and controversies associated with the police, ranging from racial profiling and the proliferation of private security, to affirmative action and the internal governance of law enforcement agencies.

An academic staple updated for the first time in fifteen years, David Alan Black's user-friendly introduction to New Testament Greek keeps discussion of grammar as non-technical as possible. The simplified explanations, basic vocabularies, and abundant exercises are designed to prepare the student for subsequent practical courses in exegesis, while the linguistic emphasis lays the groundwork for later courses in grammar. Revisions to this third edition include updated discussions and scholarship, further back matter vocabulary references, and additional appendices. "A streamlined introductory grammar that will prove popular in the classroom." --Murray J. Harris, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School "Clear charts, clear examples, clear discussion--what more could one want from a beginning grammar!" --Darrell L. Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary " . . . combines the strengths of a fairly traditional sequence of topics, in generally manageable chunks with clear explanations fully abreast of modern linguistics." --Craig L. Blomberg, Denver Seminary "Pedagogically conceived, linguistically informed, hermeneutically sensitive, biblically focused--unique among beginning grammars. It sets a new standard." --Robert Yarbrough, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

How Grant secured a Tennessee victory and a promotionUnion soldiers in the Army of the Cumberland, who were trapped and facing starvation or surrender in the fall of 1863, saw the arrival of Major General Ulysses S. Grant in Tennessee as an impetus to reverse the tides of war. David A. Powell’s sophisticated strategic and operational analysis of Grant’s command decisions and actions shows how his determined leadership relieved the siege and shattered the enemy, resulting in the creation of a new strategic base of Union operations and Grant’s elevation to commander of all the Federal armies the following year. Powell’s detailed exploration of the Union Army of the Cumberland’s six-week-long campaign for Chattanooga is complemented by his careful attention to the personal issues Grant faced at the time and his relationships with his superiors and subordinates. Though unfamiliar with the tactical situation, the army, and its officers, Grant delivered another resounding victory. His success, explains Powell, was due to his tactical flexibility, communication with his superiors, perseverance despite setbacks, and dogged determination to win the campaign. Through attention to postwar accounts, Powell reconciles the differences between what happened and the participants’ memories of the events. He focuses throughout on Grant’s controversial decisions, showing how they were made and their impact on the campaign. As Powell shows, Grant’s choices demonstrate how he managed to be a thoughtful, deliberate commander despite the fog of war.

Chicago-born architect Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961) is known primarily for a magnificent drafting style that incorporated architectural plans into dramatic and stylized landscapes. Yet standard histories of early twentieth-century architecture have not fully recognized her pioneering work, which went far beyond her early contributions to the Prairie School. ""Marion Mahony Griffin: Drawing the Form of Nature"" is the first book devoted to Mahony Griffin's graphic work and presents a new critical interpretation of her art. Marion Mahony Griffin was the second woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in architecture and the first woman licensed to practice architecture in Illinois. After years of freelance drafting and design - most famously for Frank Lloyd Wright - she and her husband, architect Walter Burley Griffin, embarked on a career that catapulted them from Chicago to Australia in 1914 after winning the international competition to design the Federal Capital of Australia at Canberra. Marion Mahony Griffin's graphic art is defined by her innovative representations of nature. Her presentation drawings clearly illustrate that architectural design and forms of the natural landscape are inseparable. Botanical forms are also woven into her children's book illustrations and murals and are the subject of the series of ""Forest Portraits"" she made in Australia. The many illustrations in this book include vintage photographs of Mahony Griffin's life and work and commercial illustrations that have previously never been published, new photographs of her public murals, full-page color plates of her architectural renderings and ""Forest Portraits"", as well as an exclusive color facsimile of the ""Forest Portraits"" and captions as found in the New-York Historical Society's copy of Marion Mahony Griffin's unpublished memoir ""The Magic of America.

A First Course in Magnetohydrodynamics

A First Course in Magnetohydrodynamics

This text introduces readers to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the physics of ionised fluids. Traditionally MHD is taught as part of a graduate curriculum in plasma physics. By contrast, this text - one of a very few - teaches MHD exclusively from a fluid dynamics perspective, making it uniquely accessible to senior undergraduate students. Part I of the text uses the MHD Riemann problem as a focus to introduce the fundamentals of MHD: Alfvén's theorem; waves; shocks; rarefaction fans; etc. Part II builds upon this with presentations of broader areas of MHD: fluid instabilities; viscid hydrodynamics; steady-state MHD; and non-ideal MHD. Throughout the text, more than 125 problems and several projects (with solutions available to instructors) reinforce the main ideas. Optionally, large-font lesson plans for a 'flipped-style' class are also available to instructors. This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, requiring no previous knowledge of fluid dynamics or plasma physics.

THERE'S AN ANIMAL IN ALL OF US... BRID: Fight or Flight is a gripping new sci-fi novel set in the post-apocalyptic London. A fast-paced, action-packed, sharp-witted futuristic adventure that's born of science but delivered through relatable teen characters. If you liked the half-god, half-human characters in the Percy Jackson books (but without the mythology) or loved the Harry Potter 'Sorting Hat' (but from a savage animal DNA perspective) or were captivated by people's individual daemons in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials (but more genetically engineered) or enjoyed the terrifying bug-like menace of Starship Troopers (but on a future Earth) then this may well capture your imagination. The year is 2417. A series of catastrophic genetic experiments has shifted the species' power balance on the planet. Earth is ruled, not by man...but by giant Insects. The Sectz. Vastly superior physically, they have obliterated man's traditional weapons of war. Established infrastructures have broken down. Now it is humanity's turn to hide away in isolated city-colonies. Heavily fortified skyscrapers stand like giant termite mounds. As ever, though, mankind adapts. Military scientists combine the most formidable DNA from across the Animal Kingdom with the human genome. A fearsome new army of Hybrid Soldiers is created. The Bridz. The human spirit becomes the Hybrid spirit. Yet, before Bridz become Hybrid Soldiers, they remain as normal children. Only during the hormonal change from childhood to adulthood do their instinctive mammalian powers begin to surface. Only then are they transferred to the regional Hybrid Military Training Academies to hone their savage potential. To form new regiments and mark a new spike of resistance against the Sectz. Against this apocalyptic backdrop, events unfold through the eyes of a young schoolboy, Xavier Wish. For this pre-Hybrid youngster, growing up with his two best friends in the chaotic environment of the London City Colony is just normal everyday life. What Xavier doesn't realise is, he's about to discover his powers - and his purpose - in a global war to save the human species. The hybrid wars have begun... Written for YA readers but appealing to all ages, BRID: Fight or Flight is a relentless, often humorous sci-fi action adventure set in an unthinkable dystopian future London, raising questions about humanity, war, ecology and a terrifying global species imbalance.

This book explores the professional and social lives of the soldiers who served in the army of the Byzantine Empire in the sixth century. More than just a fighting force, this army was the setting in which hundreds of thousands of men forged relationships and manoeuvred for promotion. The officers of this force, from famous generals like Belisarius and Narses to lesser-known men like Buzes and Artabanes, not only fought battles but also crafted social networks and cultivated their relationships with their emperor, fellow officers, families, and subordinate soldiers. Looming in the background were differences in identity, particularly between Romans and those they identified as barbarians. Drawing on numerical evidence and stories from sixth-century authors who understood the military, Justinian’s Men highlights a sixth-century Byzantine army that was vibrant, lively, and full of individuals working with and against each other.
