Dodging the Toxic Bullet presents workable strategies that show how we can live longer, healthier lives by breathing clean air, eating healthy food, drinking safe water, and using non-toxic products. Author David R. Boyd provides accessible background on a range of hazards including mercury in fish, carcinogens in cleaning products, lead in toys, and lethal E. coli in ground beef. His clear directions for reducing risk include growing lots of houseplants, choosing whole foods, avoiding consumer products with strong or long-lasting smells, and using green cleaning products. Easy-to-follow advice and informative sidebars and checklists make this a must-have guide, especially for parents of infants and children.
A hopeful, inspiring, and honest take on the environment Yes, the world faces substantial environmental challenges -- climate change, pollution, and extinction. But the surprisingly good news is that we have solutions to these problems. In the past 50 years, a remarkable number of environmental problems have been solved, while substantial progress is ongoing on others. The Optimistic Environmentalist chronicles these remarkable success stories. Endangered species -- from bald eagles to gray whales -- pulled back from the precipice of extinction. Thousands of new parks, protecting billions of hectares of land and water. The salvation of the ozone layer, vital to life on Earth. The exponential growth of renewable energy powered by wind, water, and sun. The race to be the greenest city in the world. Remarkable strides in cleaning up the air we breathe and the water we drink. The banning of dozens of the world's most toxic chemicals. A circular economy where waste is a thing of the past. Past successes pave the way for even greater achievements in the future. Providing a powerful antidote to environmental despair, this book inspires optimism, leading readers to take action and exemplifying how change can happen. A bright green future is not only possible, it's within our grasp.
Palila v Hawaii. New Zealand s Te Urewera Act. Sierra Club v Disney. These legal phrases hardly sound like the makings of a revolution. But beyond the headlines portending environmental catastrophes, a movement of immense import has been building in courtrooms, legislatures, and communities across the globe. Cultures and laws are transforming to provide a powerful new approach to protecting the planet and the species with whom we share it. In Argentina, courts have ordered chimpanzees and orangutans to be freed from captivity in zoos, because these great apes have rights. In Hawaii and India, judges have recognized that endangered species from birds to lions have the legal right to exist. In New Zealand, Ecuador, and the U.S., laws have been passed recognizing that ecosystems rivers, forests, mountains, and more have legally enforceable rights. And if nature has rights, then humans have responsibilities. In The Rights of Nature, noted environmental lawyer David Boyd tells this remarkable story, which is, at its heart, one of humans as a species finally growing up. Read this book and your world view will be altered forever. Important and timely, The Rights of Nature is a recipe for hope for humans and all forms of life."
"The characters are boldly drawn and interesting, and Boyd writes with real style. One of the best westerns of the year. " Daily OklahomanIn the mid-1800s, banditos swarmed into Arizona and Texas from Mexico, driven by the poverty and despair of a divided country, and terrorized homesteaders, ranchers and Indians, looting, burning, raping and killing. Navarro and his band were the worst of the banditos. No ranch, gringo or Indian was safe from his savage cruelty. But that changes when Navarro brutalizes and kills Sis Henshaw. Now her furious brothers are chasing after him, hell-bent on violent and total retribution....and Navarro is discovering what real terror feels like. "For those who like them fast-moving and brutal. It's excellent " San Angelo Times"Carse Boyd" was a pseudonym for David Derek Stacton (1923-1968), an acclaimed American poet and author, under various names, of literary fiction, historical novels, and soft-core gay porn. He was a two-time recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and also received a Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work ranged from lurid tales like D is for Delinquent to a non-fiction book about the fall of Constantinople. His books under his own name include The Bonapartes, The Judges of the Secret Order, A Signal Victory and People of the Book: A Novel of the Thirty Years War. He died in Denmark in 1968.PRAISE FOR DAVID STACTON (aka CARSE BOYD): "A stylistic virtuoso, matching on the typewriter the lightning flashes of such musical masters as Paganini on the violin," The Chicago Tribune"John Banville comes to mind as an author who so easily switches gears from fustian to fetid...it is fascinating to watch Stacton working out in the noirs the kind of novelist he would become. From the beginning, Stacton is drawn to a certain kind of person, the kind who is the 'victim of the propulsive force of his own character.'" Los Angeles Review of Books"The prose of David Stacton is like that of no other writer. It suggests a corridor in a dark Gothic tower, ill-lit by tapers, at one end of which a gong sounds incessantly."Time Magazaine "The most unjustly neglected American novelist of the post-war years, David Stacton's ambitious high style and melodrama have seen him banished. It's time for a return to favour. Few writers have managed more fully than Stacton to bear out Gore Vidal's maxim that writers shouldn't 'write what they know' but, rather, what they imagine or suspect.'... and yet, Stacton himself can be seen to hide in plain sight behind everything he wrote." The Guardian (London)"His prose reveals great cultural depth and breadth. He uses language lovingly. Almost every sentence contains a striking metaphor or simile. Aphorisms sparkle from paragraph to paragraph." Fort Worth Star-Telegram"David Stacton is a major writer who has the approval of critics but so far lacks the consent of readers at large. In short, it's the story of literary virtue unrewarded...his novels are enjoyable as well as admirable." Oakland Tribune
Written together with friend and journalist Boyd Hilton, Inside Little Britain follows a year in the lives of Matt Lucas and David Walliams - the good, the bad, the mundane and the monumental. A year that includes at its core a mammoth nine-month Spinal Tap-esque tour where Little Britain goes in search of Great Britain. This is a milestone book that offers an unrivalled close-up of a classic British comedy act, as it happens, at the height of its powers. But it is also a journey back into their pasts, reflecting on just how they got from there to here. It covers their childhoods, family life and early comedy performances as they found their feet; their complex friendship and working relationship; and the increasingly insane world they now inhabit.Mixing memoir and travelogue to paint an engrossing portrait of fame and comic genius, Inside Little Britain is an unmissable, candid window on life inside the celebrity bubble in all its glamour and awfulness.

The Elect Methodists is the first full-length academic study of Calvinistic Methodism, a movement that emerged in the eighteenth century as an alternative to the better known Wesleyan grouping. While the branch of Methodism led by John Wesley has received significant historical attention, Calvinistic Methodism, especially in England, has not. The book charts the sources of the eighteenth-century Methodist revival in the context of Protestant evangelicalism emerging in continental Europe and colonial North America, and then proceeds to follow the fortunes in both England and Wales of the Calvinistic branch, to the establishing of formal denominations in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Applications of Topic Models

How can a single person understand what’s going on in a collection of millions of documents? This is an increasingly widespread problem: sifting through an organization’s e- mails, understanding a decade worth of newspapers, or characterizing a scientific field’s research. This monograph explores the ways that humans and computers make sense of document collections through tools called topic models. Topic models are a statistical framework that help users understand large document collections; not just to find individual documents but to understand the general themes present in the collection. Applications of Topic Models describes the recent academic and industrial applications of topic models. In addition to topic models’ effective application to traditional problems like information retrieval, visualization, statistical inference, multilingual modeling, and linguistic understanding, Applications of Topic Models also reviews topic models’ ability to unlock large text collections for qualitative analysis. It reviews their successful use by researchers to help understand fiction, non-fiction, scientific publications, and political texts. Applications of Topic Models is aimed at the reader with some knowledge of document processing, basic understanding of some probability, and interested in many application domains. It discusses the information needs of each application area, and how those specific needs affect models, curation procedures, and interpretations. By the end of the monograph, it is hoped that readers will be excited enough to attempt to embark on building their own topic models. It should also be of interest to topic model experts as the coverage of diverse applications may expose models and approaches they had not seen before.

Estimation Problems in Hybrid Systems

Developments in sensor and processor sophistication have created a need for effective estimation and control algorithms for hybrid, nonlinear systems. This book presents an effective, flexible family of estimation algorithms that can be used in estimating or controlling a variety of nonlinear plants. Several applications are studied, including tracking a manoeuvring aircraft, automatic target recognition, and the decoding of signals transmitted across a wireless communications link. The authors begin by setting out the necessary theoretical background and then develop a practical, finite-dimensional approximation to an optimal estimator. Throughout the book, they illustrate theoretical results by simulation of control and estimation in real-world hybrid systems, drawn from a variety of engineering fields. The book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering. It will also be a useful reference for practising engineers involved in the design of estimation, tracking or wireless communications systems.

In the past, scholars and others have asked whether Mormons are Christian. This work reverses the question by asking, "are Christians Mormon?" By identifying Mormon doctrines formerly considered heretical and documenting how these doctrines have gained increasing acceptance within mainstream Christian theologies, the work presents some surprising insights. In chapters focusing on subjects such as deification, the divine feminine, and the reopening of the scriptural canon, among others, the book sets out Joseph Smith's teachings on these ideas, summarizes the criticisms of those positions, and examines trends in contemporary Christian theology that significantly converge in Joseph's direction. Exploring the convergence of contemporary Christian theology with Mormon doctrines, this book will appeal to a broad range of students and readers exploring Christian theology and the Latter-day Saint tradition.
