At the turn of the twentieth century, West Virginia was in the throes of its formative years as a state. After more than two decades of alternating its government seat between Wheeling and Charleston and the destruction of the Gothic Revival Capitol in Charleston by fire in 1921, a building commission was formed to create a permanent Capitol that would display the young state's pride, wealth, and sophistication to the entire nation. To achieve these goals, the legislature approved a budget of more than $6.5 million for the design and construction of this statehouse and the Commission appointed by the Governor hired internationally renowned Cass Gilbert as its architect. After much debate, an impressive site along the shore of the Kanawha River in Charleston was selected as its location. As one of the most influential architects of the early twentieth century, Cass Gilbert is known for structures such as the Woolworth Building, the United States Supreme Court building, and the Minnesota State Capitol. He believed architecture should reflect historic tradition and established social order, and this conservative philosophy is evinced within the classic form and proportions of the West Virginia State Capitol. As one of his final commissions, the West Virginia Capitol, with its golden ""dome of majestic proportion,"" marble interiors, ornamental reliefs, and rich woodwork, remains a distinguished example of noble simplicity in American architecture.Cass Gilbert's West Virginia State Capitol narrates the intricate story behind this architectural feat. Its close examination of the design, construction, and execution of this commission not only reveals the social, political, and financial climate of West Virginia during this period but also provides insight into the cultural importance of this public building. As Cass Gilbert's design process is traced through unpublished documentation, drawings, and letters from several archives, the over one hundred accompanying photographs - many historical and others newly commissioned for this book - divulge the subtle beauty of the Capitol complex. At the same time, an extensive analysis of historical and contemporary illustrations and primary sources further elucidates the architectural value of this structure. With welcomes by West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and State Senator Brooks F. McCabe, Jr., a prologue by art historians Bernard Schultz and Mary L. Soldo Schultz, and an epilogue by Chad Proudfoot, this revealing and comprehensive study examines the importance of this often overlooked architectural accomplishment, solidifying its significance as a socio-political symbol as well as its place within the history of American public architecture.

David Cassidy's portrait of this brilliant, ambitious and controversial scientist is the definitive Heisenberg biography. "An absorbing new biography of Werner Heisenberg ..." The Sunday Telegraph "Uncertainty is an exquisite book." Nature "...well balanced and exciting reading. Uncertainty is an excellent work which combines meticulous scholarship with a presentation freed of intellectual jargon and unnecessary scientific details. I see its merits first of all in its comprehensiveness and accuracy, and next in its success in recreating the personal drama of one of the greatest and most influential scientists of this century." THEY WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO CLAIM IT AS THEIR OWN In 2016 a pair of amateur astronomers spot an unidentified object – an object one hundred kilometres across and heading towards Earth. As it approaches, NASA and the Russian-Indian-Brazilian Coalition race to land vehicles on the unexplored surface. With power, money and politics behind each mission, both crews have orders to stop at nothing to get there first. Zack Stewart, NASA’s team leader, is determined to succeed. But as they’re about to land, violent explosions from the meteorite’s surface propel it directly into Earth’s orbit. Analysis shows the explosions were timed and deliberate – but by whom and why? As the world holds its breath, Zack makes a discovery that will change the course of humanity... forever. ‘Recalls Arthur C. Clarke at his heights … Better still, there’s more to come!’ Gregory Benford ‘Prepare to have your world rocked’ Robert J. Understanding Physics provides a thorough grounding in contemporary physics while placing physics into its social and historical context. Based in large part on the highly respected Project Physics Course developed by two of the authors, it also integrates the results of recent pedagogical research. The text thus: - teaches about the basic phenomena in the physical world and the concepts developed to explain them - shows that science is a rational human endeavor with a long and continuing tradition, involving many different cultures and people - develops facility in critical thinking, reasoned argumentation, evaluation of evidence, mathematical modeling, and ethical values The treatment emphasizes not only what we know but also how we know it, why we believe it, and what effects that knowledge has: - Why do we believe the Earth and planets revolve around the Sun? - Why do we believe that matter is made of atoms? - How do relativity theory and quantum mechanics alter our conception of Nature and in what ways do they leave the classical concepts unchanged? - What impact does the knowledge of finite energy resources have on our society? - How have applications of fundamental science (such as the steam engine, the laser, the electric generator, the transistor) affected our lives? - How does the evidence for non-scientific ideas, such as UFOs, ESP, and the like, differ from the evidence for accepted scientific results?

A Short History of Physics in the American Century

A Short History of Physics in the American Century

David C. Cassidy

nidottu
As the twentieth century drew to a close, computers, the Internet, and nanotechnology were central to modern American life. Yet the advances in physics underlying these applications are poorly understood and widely underappreciated by U.S. citizens today. In this concise overview, David C. Cassidy sharpens our perspective on modern physics by viewing this foundational science through the lens of America's engagement with the political events of a tumultuous century.American physics first stirred in the 1890s-around the time x-rays and radioactivity were discovered in Germany-with the founding of graduate schools on the German model. Yet American research lagged behind the great European laboratories until highly effective domestic policies, together with the exodus of physicists from fascist countries, brought the nation into the first ranks of world research in the 1930s. The creation of the atomic bomb and radar during World War II ensured lavish government support for particle physics, along with computation, solid-state physics, and military communication. These advances facilitated space exploration and led to the global expansion of the Internet.Well into the 1960s, physicists bolstered the United States' international status, and the nation repaid the favor through massive outlays of federal, military, and philanthropic funding. But gradually America relinquished its postwar commitment to scientific leadership, and the nation found itself struggling to maintain a competitive edge in science education and research. Today, American physicists, relying primarily on industrial funding, must compete with smaller, scrappier nations intent on writing their own brief history of physics in the twenty-first century.

Burnout is a taboo subject. Admitting you are burning out in your job is tantamount to career suicide for some employees; for their organizations it is like raising a white flag in the war for talent. But suppose that preventing burnout is the worst thing you can do. Suppose for some people, particularly high fliers, it represents a call to deep and urgent learning about themselves and how they relate to the world. Suppose that we need instead to learn to manage burnout and harness the powerful learning potential of the experience, and in so doing build careers aligned with individual meaning and purpose, sustainable in the long term. What would organizations and their people need to do to achieve this? This book: * Explains what burnout is, how it is becoming the 21st-century business equivalent of the 'black death', and how it can derail your career * Highlights the financial, reputational and personal costs to organizations and people * Details how burnout can deliver a killer punch to talent management and the development of the leaders of tomorrow, and risk the retention, growth and productivity of high fliers * Explores why some of us develop a strong sense of our own, personal identity at work, while others find it more difficult * Presents a coaching process to manage burnout and harness its learning potential * Provides a framework for individuals to build careers aligned with individual meaning and purpose.

David C. Cassidy's celebrated biography is more than the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant physicist who served as scientific director for the Manhattan Project. It also tells the hidden story of the political and social forces that shaped the world in the 20th century, when the rise of American science contributed mightily to the country's emergence as a dominant power in world affairs. Cassidy explores that strong relationship in the captivating story of the rise and fall of one of America's greatest scientists. As head of the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer led the country's successful effort to build the first atom bomb during World War II. In 1954 the government-with the United States embroiled in the Cold War-stripped him of his security clearance amid allegations that he consorted with communists. In rich detail Cassidy places this personal story of public disgrace within the larger narrative of the rise of science in America.
