Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Sample Surveys

Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Sample Surveys

Sample surveys provide data used by researchers in a large range of disciplines to analyze important relationships using well-established and widely used likelihood methods. The methods used to select samples often result in the sample differing in important ways from the target population and standard application of likelihood methods can lead to biased and inefficient estimates. Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Sample Surveys presents an overview of likelihood methods for the analysis of sample survey data that account for the selection methods used, and includes all necessary background material on likelihood inference. It covers a range of data types, including multilevel data, and is illustrated by many worked examples using tractable and widely used models. It also discusses more advanced topics, such as combining data, non-response, and informative sampling. The book presents and develops a likelihood approach for fitting models to sample survey data. It explores and explains how the approach works in tractable though widely used models for which we can make considerable analytic progress. For less tractable models numerical methods are ultimately needed to compute the score and information functions and to compute the maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters. For these models, the book shows what has to be done conceptually to develop analyses to the point that numerical methods can be applied. Designed for statisticians who are interested in the general theory of statistics, Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Sample Surveys is also aimed at statisticians focused on fitting models to sample survey data, as well as researchers who study relationships among variables and whose sources of data include surveys.

This extraordinary and practical book examines neuro linguistic programming (NLP) - the knowledge and skills to detect and affect thinking patterns - and applies it to each phase of the medical consultation. It outlines the NLP tools most useful to physicians who wish to understand and utilise the dynamic structure underlying the processes used by excellent communicators. It explains how improving communication skills and developing new models of consultation to incorporate into daily practice not only helps healthcare professionals become better communicators but reassures patients alleviating suffering and promoting healing. This book provides many case examples and includes skill based exercises to ensure easy and effective learning. There are unique fresh perspectives on challenging areas such as anger and aggression dealing with complaints breaking bad news the heartsink patient uncovering hidden depression and telephone consulting skills. It is relevant to all healthcare professionals and of special interest to general practitioners GP trainers counsellors and medical students. 'Building on the Calgary-Cambridge model Lewis Walker has outlined some of the NLP tools that are most useful to physicians who wish to engage their patients' physical and psychological ability to self-heal. It is truly a pleasure to introduce a book that offers pragmatic tools in the service of that highest calling namely the desire to alleviate suffering and promote healing.' Ian McDermott in his Foreword 'This is a book packed with practical advice and a welcome feature is the way the author relates his message to everyday problems and concerns that patients bring to the surgery. "Windows to the Womb" is an eloquent guide through the first nine months of life from conception to birth. In the past, the invisible physical processes of fetal development were mysterious and largely unexplainable, but in the past half-century, breakthroughs in embryology, interuterine photography, ultrasound, and other sensitive instruments of measurement have have enabled us to make systematic observations inside the womb. We now understand that fetuses are fully sentient and aware beings. In this new climate of appreciation for the surprising dimensions of fetal behavior, sensitivity, and intelligence, this book brings a host of new information to light about the transformative journey each one of us must undergo in the womb. With reverent awe, the author describes the amazing construction of our physical bodies, the "ultimate architecture," and draws parallels with the expansion of our minds as our brains and senses develop and grow. Dr. Chamberlain details new discoveries in embryonic and fetal research that support his own findings on the impact of the mother's emotional and physical state during pregnancy; the importance of bonding at the earliest stages, long before birth; and the steps that expectant parents can take to ensure the most nurturing start in life for their children. Table of Contents - 1. Windows to the Womb: The First Generation to See and Know - 2. The Wonder of Conception - 3. Your Body Under Construction: The Ultimate Architecture - 4. Showcases the vibrant ecosystems sustained by South Carolina's waterways; Sure to foster a greater appreciation for South Carolina's waterways as well as a desire to conserve them for future generations, The South Carolina Aquarium Guide to Aquatic Habitats of South Carolina introduces readers, hikers, boaters, reachers, and students to the remarkable beauty and complexity of the state's wetlands. With almost a quarter of its acreage covered by water, South Carolina is a small state distinguished by biological diversity and an extensive range of habitats. This guide, written in an engaging and easy-to-read style by two experienced naturalists, tells the story of water's inexorable movement from mountains to coast, and of the abundant plant and animal species that benefit from its many stops, starts, and backtrackings along the way. Underscoring the fact that the state's streams, rivers, lakes, swamps, marshes and estuaries form a single, interrelated system, Pete Laurie and David Chamberlain explore the particular wetland habitats in each of South Carolina's five physiographic regions. They describe habitats as varied as waterfalls, blackwater swamps, and tidal creeks and as distinctive as Carolina bays. The guide includes illustrations of flora and fauna, maps of the region, and suggested sites to visit throughout the state. Written primarily to link the exhibits of the South Carolina Aquarium to the natural habitats they represent, The South Carolina Aquarium Guide to Aquatic Habitats of South Carolina is an ideal companion for any exploration of the state's natural areas.

Neville Chamberlain remains one of the most controversial figures of twentieth-century British politics. For many years he was admired, even revered, throughout Britain. After serving as Prime Minister, however, Chamberlain left office a reviled and disdained public figure. This book seeks to explain these extremes while offering the author's assessment of what Chamberlain's historical reputation ought to be.
