Lancelot Graves, a former special forces agent turned travel writer, just wanted to drop a motorbike off for a friend and spend a weekend exploring Milwaukee. But when he meets a distraught young woman he agrees to help her find her missing sister. This impulse to help leads Lancelot down a path of corruption, conspiracy, and death. He's still able to review some nice places to visit though. Part action adventure series, part travel guide, Lancelot Graves provides what some would consider "the most titillating and viscerally exciting action stories" combined with what at least one person called "very interesting travel advice hidden behind the best storytelling of all time." What strangers on the street are saying about my vaguely described synopsis: "Um, yeah, I guess that sounds cool." "Dude, you can't claim a living politician is running a sex ring." "I don't have any change." "Mmmmmmmmm."

The Grotesque Modernist Body explores how and why modernist authors drew on the traditions of the grotesque body in order to represent modern reality accurately. The author employs the concept of the grotesque body as a theoretical framework with which to examine rigorously a range of modernist novels, poems and visual media by Conrad, Lewis, Eliot and Barnes, alongside their historical contexts and theories of humour and horror. This monograph challenges the prevailing narrative of modernism’s abstract, psychological and impersonal ‘inward turn’ by tracing its mechanical-animal hybrid bodies back tothe medieval carnival satire of Rabelais, the gothic horror of the long nineteenth century, from Hoffmann, Shelley and Poe, to H.G. Wells and Henry James, and the uncanny, dreamlike art of Goya and Rousseau.

When England cricket captain Tony Greig announced that he intended to make the West Indies 'grovel', he lit a fire that burned as intensely as the sunshine that made 1976 one of the most memorable summers in British history. Spurred on by what they saw as a deeply offensive remark, especially from a white South African, Clive Lloyd's touring team vowed to make Greig pay. In Viv Richards, emerging as the world's most exciting batsman, and fast bowlers Michael Holding and Andy Roberts they had the players to do it. Featuring interviews with key figures from English and West Indian cricket, Grovel!: The Story and Legacy of the Summer of 1976 provides a fascinating study of the events and social issues surrounding one of the sport's most controversial and colourful tours - as well as addressing the decline of West Indies cricket and its loss of support in the new century.

"A 'classic' of its type--the closest comparison is the legendary Weibust's Deep Sea Sailors, and I would hazard to suggest that this book may come to hold a similarly important place in the scholarship of maritime ethnography."--Joseph Flatman, author of Ships and Shipbuilding in Medieval Manuscripts"This innovative study provides an important analysis of Anglo-American mariners' attitudes toward death, the dead, and commemoration. It will be valuable to all interested in historic maritime culture and mortuary practices, and reveals a distinctive mariner subculture which also influenced their families back home."--Harold Mytum, author of Mortuary Monuments and Burial Grounds of the Prehistoric Period Like other groups with dangerous occupations, mariners have developed a close-knit culture bound by loss and memory. Death regularly disrupts the fabric of this culture and necessitates actions designed to mend its social structure. From the ritual of burying a body at sea to the creation of memorials to honor the missing, these events tell us a great deal about how sailors see their world.Based on a study of more than 2,100 gravestones and monuments in North America and the United Kingdom erected between the seventeenth and late twentieth centuries, David Stewart expands the use of nautical archaeology into terrestrial environments. He focuses on those who make their living at sea--one of the world's oldest and most dangerous occupations--to examine their distinct folkloric traditions, beliefs, and customs regarding death, loss, and remembrance. David J. Stewart, assistant professor of nautical archaeology at East Carolina University, is a contributor to Burial at Sea. A volume in the series New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology, edited by James C. Bradford and Gene Allen Smith

With the success of Fight Club, his novel-turned-movie, Chuck Palahniuk has become noticed for accurately capturing the exploitation of power in America in the 21st century. With cynicism and skepticism, he satirizes the manipulative aspects of ideologies and beliefs pushing society's understanding of the norm. In this work, Palahniuk's characters are analyzed as people who rebel against the systems in control. Mikhail Bakhtin's theory is applied to explain Palahniuk's application of the comic grotesque; theories from Louis Althusser and Slavoj Žižek help reveal aspects of ideology in Palahniuk's writing.

As a ministerial student starting a church in a retirement village, I needed a book like this one, with short sermons for memorials and funerals, but had trouble finding one. As I neared my own retirement, I felt led to start compiling the messages I'd developed over the years. They are meant to serve the needs of young preachers and lay speakers at such services. The last one in the book was written for the funeral of my own cousin, just a bit younger than myself. I hope you'll find them a useful blessing in your ministry to the bereaved.
