Restraining Power

Restraining Power

David C. Hendrickson

For centuries, thinkers grappled with a fundamental question: how can sovereign states coexist without destroying each other? Restraining Power recovers a forgotten tradition that offered an answer-the "law of nature and nations" built on reciprocity, justice, and good faith. David C. Hendrickson excavates this vital framework for restraining state violence and shows why it matters now more than ever. All states, Hendrickson argues, have an interest in observing these principles, but few states have violated them more than the United States. He shows that in crossing these principles, US foreign policy has entered a destabilizing shadow world in which force and fraud seem normal.

In a context of heightened global disruption, accelerating digital transformation, and increasing sustainability imperatives, the 5th edition of Operations Management for Business Excellence, provides a contemporary and analytically grounded framework for understanding how operations and supply chain management contribute to long-term organisational performance. The text integrates foundational principles of operations and supply chain management with recent developments in automation, artificial intelligence, robotics, connected systems, and real-time analytics. It examines how these technologies are reshaping operational decision-making, blurring traditional boundaries between planning and execution, and raising new questions concerning governance, ethics, and the role of human judgement in technology-enabled systems. Each chapter combines conceptual clarity with applied examples, linking operations strategy to practical challenges such as warehouse design in the era of Industry 5.0, omnichannel logistics, returns management, and supply network resilience. A consistent five-pillar strategic framework – adaptability, customer-driven innovation, continuous competitive recalibration, proactive risk management, and workforce empowerment – provides a structured lens through which advanced supply chain concepts are analysed. Written for undergraduate and postgraduate students, executives, and practitioners, the book balances analytical rigour with accessibility. It encourages critical evaluation of how organisations can design effective, resilient, and responsible operations, positioning operations management as a discipline that integrates people, technology, and sustainability to create enduring value.

This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that is the quantification of these problems and represents the twenty-five years’ worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly ‘metal fatigue’) is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to quantify and this remains the case with so-called ‘free initiation’ and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the subject and to practitioner in industry.

As traces left behind by the last two hundred years of profound historical change, architecture and photography contribute both to our contemporary skyline and to our image of the past. Their common history thus provides an indispensable background to every discussion of what has been called the contemporary past - that is, to modernity considered as an open problem rather than a closed historical period. Architecture can be seen as a kind of macromodernity, a social scope where the diverse discourses of modernity have assumed their most large-scale form. In analogy, photographic media constitute a micromodernity, where the underside of modern society has been registered, identified, classified, and archived. In both cases, we trace out the irregular borderline between the discursive and its opposite, the material. At this point of intersection, an interesting confrontation between traditional academic historiography and an artistic application of historical perspectives might be staged. What contribution can architecture and photography make to the exploration of our contemporary past? Victor Buchli, in his afterword, underlines the potential of such confrontations: Translation always betrays the original intention, but what might be described as the infelicities of the translation that are inherently treacherous are precisely what constitute its productive capacities.

Confederate newspapers were beset by troubles: paper shortages, high ink prices, printers striking for higher pay, faulty telegraphic news service, and subscription prices insufficient to support their operations. But they also had the potential to be politically powerful, and their reporting of information—accurate or biased—shaped perceptions of the Civil War and its trajectory. The Atlanta Daily Intelligencer Covers the Civil War investigates how Atlanta’s most important newspaper reported the Civil War in its news articles, editorial columns, and related items in its issues from April 1861 to April 1865. The authors show how The Intelligencer narrated the war’s important events based on the news it received, at what points the paper (and the Confederate press, generally) got the facts right or wrong based on the authors’ original research on the literature, and how the paper’s editorial columns reflected on those events from an unabashedly pro-Confederate point of view. While their book focuses on The Intelligencer, Stephen Davis and Bill Hendrick also contribute to the scholarship on Confederate newspapers, emphasizing the papers’ role as voices of Confederate patriotism, Southern nationalism, and contributors to wartime public morale. Their well-documented, detailed study adds to our understanding of the relationship between public opinion and misleading propaganda.

This collection features five peer-reviewed literature reviews on nematode pests in agriculture. The first chapter assesses the value and impact of using integrated pest management (IPM) to combat nematode pests. It summarises the basic biology and morphology of the most economically-important nematode pests and reviews cultural, biological and chemical methods of control. The second chapter discusses advances in understanding plant root response to nematode attack. It highlights how nematodes form feeding structures in host roots and how this behaviour has allowed plants to evolve new mechanisms of resistance that target this structure with a toxic response. The third chapter discusses key nematode pests of wheat, including cereal cyst, root-knot and root-lesion nematodes. It features research on best practice in detecting and managing these pests effectively. The fourth chapter summarises what we know about soil and plant nematodes damaging maize, including lesion, root-knot and vermiform nematodes. It reviews research on characteristics, identification and effects which provide the foundation for effective control. The final chapter describes the characteristics and control of key nematode pests of potatoes: potato cyst nematodes, root knot nematodes, root lesion nematode, potato rot and stem nematodes as well as virus vector nematodes.

The story of King David, his childhood, his battle with the Philistines, his women, and the tragedy of his son Absalom, is full of excitement, but yet is only a part of his life. His relationship with the Lord God was the key thing, and he danced before the Lord. He was also the first King of Israel, and our story starts at the time when Jerusalem was conquered by Babylon, and its people taken away into captivity. They started to look back at the foundation myths of their history, and the story of David and Solomon, when the kingdom was at the height of its glory, seemed to be just the story to tell. So that is how the collection of stories of David came to be compiled into the books we can read today.

A reexamination of the biblical David, legendary warrior, poet, and king, by one of America’s most respected rabbis Of all the figures in the Bible, David arguably stands out as the most perplexing and enigmatic. He was many things: a warrior who subdued Goliath and the Philistines; a king who united a nation; a poet who created beautiful, sensitive verse; a loyal servant of God who proposed the great Temple and founded the Messianic line; a schemer, deceiver, and adulterer who freely indulged his very human appetites. David Wolpe, whom Newsweek called “the most influential rabbi in America,” takes a fresh look at biblical David in an attempt to find coherence in his seemingly contradictory actions and impulses. The author questions why David holds such an exalted place in history and legend, and then proceeds to unravel his complex character based on information found in the book of Samuel and later literature. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of an exceptional human being who, despite his many flaws, was truly beloved by God.
