Today's American, hand-crafted furniture is bristling with originality. Blending art and functionality, David Ebner creates unique benches, tables, and chairs. This designer-craftsman's work subtly surpasses the limits of the furniture world and often crosses over into the realm of sculpture. Fine woods with interesting patterns are featured in his practical designs, which reflect natural elements of the places where he has worked in New York state. He fuses traditional and modern techniques and is well known for his scallion coat rack, Renwick benches, and Bellport chairs. See more than 340 color photos and sketches of Ebner's designs for diverse forms created with "twisted sticks," tubular metal, iron sections, and bamboo laminates. In his lifetime, he's made more than 1,400 pieces. Especially interesting are projects he continues to design today in his ever-evolving style.
A Grip on the Mane of Life: An Authorized Biography of Earl V. Shaffer

A Grip on the Mane of Life: An Authorized Biography of Earl V. Shaffer

Appalachian Trail Conference

After serving four-and-a-half years in the Army during World War II--mostly in the battle-torn islands of the South Pacific--and along the way losing his best friend at Iwo Jima, Earl Shaffer came home to Pennsylvania with a large dose of military depression. After rattling around for a while, he decided to act upon a prewar dream of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, a decision that was spurred by reading a magazine article stating that such a feat was likely impossible. Earl achieved his goal, and he forever earned a niche in hiking history. Over the course of three decades, he wrote a memoir of that hike that is published by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as Walking with Spring. The book became an instant hiking classic. Most of Earl's writing was devoted to his first love, poetry. Earl penned more than a thousand poems during his spartan lifetime in rural Pennsylvania, a trove that includes a respectable number of polished gems. In midlife, he returned to hiking. In 1963, he hiked five hundred miles of the Cascade Crest Trail, and, in 1965, he again hiked the entire Appalachian Trail--this time in the opposite direction. When not hiking, Earl spent most of his free time working on the Trail. He built trail, corresponded with would-be thru-hikers, constructed shelters, and masterminded a major trail relocation in Pennsylvania. These were not his only interests. Earl was moved by the plight of native Americans. In the early 1960s, Earl played an active role in the ultimately failed effort to stop construction of Pennsylvania's Kinzua Dam. After what one would think was already a full and productive life, Earl had yet another dream--his grand finale. In 1998, Earl decided to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his first A.T. thru-hike by doing an encore. Just a few weeks shy of his eightieth birthday, Earl Shaffer climbed yet again to the crest of Maine's mile-high mountain, Katahdin, whereupon the Appalachian Trail icon became a national legend. This book is his previously untold story of a life off the trail.
Ordinary Differential Equations: Basics and Beyond

Ordinary Differential Equations: Basics and Beyond

David G. Schaeffer; John W. Cain

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2016
sidottu
This book develops the theory of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), starting from an introductory level (with no prior experience in ODEs assumed) through to a graduate-level treatment of the qualitative theory, including bifurcation theory (but not chaos). While proofs are rigorous, the exposition is reader-friendly, aiming for the informality of face-to-face interactions. A unique feature of this book is the integration of rigorous theory with numerous applications of scientific interest. Besides providing motivation, this synthesis clarifies the theory and enhances scientific literacy. Other features include: (i) a wealth of exercises at various levels, along with commentary that explains why they matter; (ii) figures with consistent color conventions to identify nullclines, periodic orbits, stable and unstable manifolds; and (iii) a dedicated website with software templates, problem solutions, and other resources supporting thetext (www.math.duke.edu/ode-book). Given its many applications, the book may be used comfortably in science and engineering courses as well as in mathematics courses. Its level is accessible to upper-level undergraduates but still appropriate for graduate students. The thoughtful presentation, which anticipates many confusions of beginning students, makes the book suitable for a teaching environment that emphasizes self-directed, active learning (including the so-called inverted classroom).

The UN Charter

The UN Charter

David J. Scheffer; Mark S. Ellis

Springer International Publishing AG

This book reintroduces the U.N. Charter to the global audience by describing the Charter as the most important secular document in the world, for it is essentially the constitution of global governance to which all nations are bound, even if some honor it in the breach. The co-authors explain the core principles embedded in the Charter, which embodies codified customary international law for all nations. But the book also introduces pragmatic interpretations of key Charter provisions to modernize its application both today and in the future. Under the authority of the Charter, such U.N. bodies as the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Human Rights Council, and International Court of Justice address global affairs in a tough neighborhood of 193 sovereign nations. Yet relatively few people are conversant with the principles set forth in the Charter. With moral principles under siege and with the reality of divisive politics in contemporary life, the Charter remains a beacon of global unity that offers a renewed sense of human progress in a turbulent world. The book explicates five core tenets of the U.N. Charter: human rights and fundamental freedoms, international law, economic and social progress, international peace and security, and peacemaking. The book will appeal to the academic audience and is written in a style that will engage the general reader as well. This is an extraordinary book. An excellent combination of history and future. It should definitely be used widely in educating present and coming generations about the importance of the UN and international law. It should also be read by representatives of UN member states, in particular of the P5 of the UN Security Council. It is unacceptable that all of them do not consequently perform as required by the UN Charter. (Hans Corell, Former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and the Legal Counsel of the United Nations) This is an authoritative, comprehensive and timely work on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, by two leading experts in international human rights, humanitarian and criminal law. A must read.(The Honourable Irwin Cotler, P.C., O.C., O.Q., Ad.E.; former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; Founder & International Chair, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights)

Psychotherapy Classics Featuring contributions from some of the most influential and enigmatic thinkers of the 20th century, Psychotherapy Classics: Landmark Articles in the History of Psychotherapy and Counseling is essential reading for anybody with an interest in this area. Significant Aspects of Client-Centered Therapy By Carl Rogers In this landmark publication Carl Rogers outlines the origins of client-centered therapy, the process of client-centered therapy, the discovery and capacity of the client and the client-centered nature of the therapeutic relationship. The Problem of Psychotherapy by Laurance Shaffer Originally presented as the address of the President of the Division of Clinical and Abnormal Psychology, American Psychological Association; this landmark paper draws attention to issues relating to the nature of the therapeutic process within psychotherapy which are just as relevant today: How can we understand what takes place in the therapeutic interview? Why does it readjust the distressed person? Under what conditions is psychotherapy applicable? What techniques, applied in appropriately selected circumstances will produce predictable and effective results? Shaffer's central argument is that the psychologist's major problem with respect to therapy is not that of the professional conditions of practice, but is the problem of understanding what therapy is and does. Psychotherapy And The Placebo Effect by David Rosenthal & Jerome D. Frank Describes the placebo effect, discusses some of its implications for the evaluation of psychotherapy, and makes recommendations concerning research design in psychotherapy based on these considerations. Rational Psychotherapy and Individual Psychology by Albert Ellis One of the first published accounts of rational psychotherapy; a theory of personality and a system of therapeutic technique that would eventually develop into what is now known as rational emotive behavior therapy. In the course of this landmark paper Ellis introduces and expands upon his hypothesis that thinking represents the most important way in which human emotion is caused and controlled. He then goes on to outline the main points of agreement and disagreement between rational therapy and the individual Psychology of Alfred Adler. Recollections of A Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: The Case of "Prisoner K" by Thomas-Szasz Fascinating account of "psychoanalytic psychotherapy" conducted by Thomas Szasz; who was soon to elevated into a position of international renown and controversy following the publication of his classic text "The Myth of Mental Illness." Psychotherapy As A Learning Process by Albert Bandura In this classic paper eminent psychologist Albert Bandura explores systematic attempts to apply principles of learning to the area of psychotherapy. Bandura begins this exploration by asking whether human behavior can be modified through psychological means and if so, what are the learning mechanisms that mediate behavior change? He then sets about discussing some of these learning mechanisms in turn i.e., counterconditioning, extinction, discrimination learning, methods of reward, punishment and social imitation. Psychotherapy Classics: Landmark Articles in the History of Psychotherapy and Counseling has been produced as part of an initiative by the website www.all-about-psychology.com to make historically important psychology publications widely available.

Shakespeare in the Theatre: Phyllida Lloyd

Part of the series Shakespeare in the Theatre, this book examines the work of Phyllida Lloyd who has transformed and revolutionized 21st century Shakespeare by her all female productions. It begins with the Globe Taming of the Shrew in 2003 and then, later, with her Shakespeare Trilogy: her Donmar Theatre productions of Julius Caesar (2012), Henry IV (2014) and The Tempest (2016). While critical response to The Shrew was divided, with some seeing all female approach casting as evocative of ‘girls’ boarding school’ Shakespeare, by the time of Lloyd’s 2016 season of Julius Caesar, Henry IV and The Tempest at King’s Cross, most critics appeared to be won over or at least accepting. The book explores the significance of Lloyd’s ongoing working relationships with key performers – Janet McTeer, Meryl Streep, Harriet Walter – while acknowledging the importance of Lloyd’s success with Mamma Mia! in freeing her to pursue high risk theatrical ventures – such as the all female Shakespeare productions - without needing to worry unduly about what the reviewers thought. Schafer illustrates how Lloyd’s ability to hold realism and the non real in creative tension - an ability on display in Mamma Mia! in the all female productions and in her opera productions - is particularly critical when she is working with Shakespeare’s (mostly) anti-illusionistic dramaturgy.
