Friedman's Fables

Friedman's Fables

Edwin H. Friedman

Guilford Press
2014
nidottu
Edwin H. Friedman has woven 24 illustrative tales that offer fresh perspectives on familiar human foibles and reflect the author's humor, pathos, and understanding. Friedman takes on resistance and other "demons" to show that neither insight, nor encouragement, nor intimidation can in themselves motivate an unmotivated person to change. These tales playfully demonstrate that new ideas, new questions, and imagination, more than accepted wisdom, provide each of us with the keys to overcoming stubborn emotional barriers and facilitating real change both in ourselves and others. Thought-provoking discussion questions for each fable are included. See also the downloadable audiobook, Friedman's Fables: Favorites Read by the Author, featuring 15 of the tales narrated in Dr. Friedman's inimitable style.
Ruodlieb

Ruodlieb

Edwin H. Zeydel

The University of North Carolina Press
2020
pokkari
Considered the earliest courtly romance in Germany, Ruodlieb is an invaluable document of eleventh century European society and a fascinating link in the development of the novel of chivalry. This edition by Edwin H. Zeydel (first published in 1959) with Latin text and the first English translation on facing pages is based upon painstaking study of the manuscripts, with many fragmentary lines completed and 450 corrections of Langosch's text. Zeydel's introduction to the history of the text and appendices with literary commentary and textual notes make this the first critical edition of Ruodlieb utilizing the manuscript to appear since Seiler's work in 1882.
The General's Secret Agent

The General's Secret Agent

Edwin H Longworth

Archway Publishing

sidottu
Seventeen-year-old Edwin enlisted in the military to avoid going to prison, never expecting his decision to lead him on the deadly adventure of his life. Trained to be the best, he soon adheres to little more than Wild West rules: kill or be killed. While dodging bullets--and catching a few--he makes enemies but serves his country with bravery and honor. The General's Secret Agent is a thrilling narrative that exposes the inner workings of the military. Filled with intrigue, it is a work of fiction, although much of it is based on the author's own experiences. It would be foolhardy to admit to murder or spying on the government, and yet, these things happen within the bounds of so-called fiction. Can you separate truth from story in this twisted tale of military intelligence?

The Fall River Tragedy - A History of the Borden Murders
Originally published in 1893, "The Fall River Tragedy" is a detailed account of the case of Lizzie Andrew Borden (1860-1927), an American woman who was tried but found not guilty for the brutal murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. There were no other suspects in the case and after her acquittal no one was ever charged for the murders. She remained in Fall River until her death aged 66. The murders garnered a great deal of media attention at the time and remain in popular culture today, providing the inspiration for a number of films, plays, books, and folk songs. This volume presents all the details of the case, as well as the famously contradictory inquest testimony of Lizzie Borden herself. Contents include: "Discovery of the Murders", "Police Searching the Premises", "The Borden Family", "The Search of the House", "Hiram C. Harrington's Story", "The Funeral", "A Reward Offered", "A Sermon on the Murders", etc. Read & Co. History is proudly republishing this classic work now in a brand new edition complete with the essay 'Spontaneous and Imitative Crime' by Euphemia Vale Blake.

Edwin Rian left his doctoral studies in German to help found Westminster Seminary where he served as President of the Board of Trustees. The Presbyterian Conflict was the first historical account written of the struggle over doctrinal and ecclesiastical orthodoxy at Princeton Seminary in the early twentieth Century, culminating in the decision of many of its conservative faculty to resign and form a new seminary. It remains distinctly helpful and informative as a firsthand account of the man at its center, J. Gresham Machen.
Through the Wheat

Edwin H. Simmons

Naval Institute Press
2011

One of the great defining moments in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps is their participation in World War I. It is a story of exceptional heroism and significant operational achievements as well some lessons learned the hard way. Two marines well known for their achievements in uniform as well as with the pen have recorded this rich history in a way that only“insiders” can. General Simmons and Colonel Alexander have recounted the events in great detail, capturing the spirit that earned the Marines in World War I the sobriquet “Devil dogs,” while providing an important combat study worthy of attention by veterans and neophytes alike. Names like Belleau Wood, Soissons, and St. Mihiel resonate today, nearly a century later, and Simmons and Alexander leave no doubt as to why. Hand-to-hand combat as seen through the lenses of a gas mask is accompanied by cogent analysis and thought-provoking assessments of this unique war and its impact on the U.S. Marine Corps. About the Authors Brig. Gen. Edwin H. Simmons served in the Marine Corps for 36 years from 1942 and is a decorated veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He also served the Corps for seventeen years as a civilian, including many years as Director of Marine Corps History and Museums. Col. Joseph H. Alexander served in the Marine Corps for 28 years and fought in Vietnam. He has helped produce 25 military documentaries for cable television and was chief historian on the exhibit design team for the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
