Queen Hedwig Eleonora and the Arts
Routledge

As queen consort and dowager, Hedwig Eleonora (1636–1715) held a unique position in Sweden for more than half a century. As the dominant collector and patron of art and architecture in the realm, she left a strong mark on Swedish court culture. Her dynastic network among the Northern European courts was extensive, and this helped to make Sweden a major cultural center in Northern Europe in the later seventeenth century. This book represents the first major scholarly publication on the full range of Hedwig Eleonora’s endeavours, from the financing of her court to her place within a larger princely network, to her engagements with various cultural pursuits, to her public image. As the contributors show, despite her high profile, political position, and conspicuous patronage, Hedwig Eleonora experienced little of the animosity directed at many other foreign queens and regents, such as the Medici in France and Henrietta Maria in England. In this way, she provides a model for a different and more successful way of negotiating the difficulties of joining a foreign court; the analysis of her circumstances thus adds a substantial dimension to the study of early modern queenship. Presenting much new scholarship, this volume highlights one extremely significant early modern woman and her imprint on Northern European history, and fosters international awareness of the importance of early modern Scandinavia for European cultural history.

He has the dangerous habit of sticking out his hand and grabbing whatever he can get. He doesn't think much about the consequences because he is never afraid. Owain is a British student who is very insistent on speaking correct Spanish and making the most of his study grant in Madrid. But Owain is not like Cipriano - he would rather not face assassins. Fortunately, they have the courage and hacking skills of their friend Guillermina to help them out. When Cipri discovers a valuable 14th century Arab manuscript, he cannot help but take it. Unknowingly, a piece of the controversial Eleonora-Pinto collection has fallen into their hands. Owain, Guille and Cipri's discoveries lead them into unknown territory in Madrid where certain organizations try to thrive at the expense of the citizens; where the reigning law is the survival of the fittest, even if this means a total lack of scruples. Although the Petersens' name is quite known among specialists of Pietism, their work, their ideas and the development of their thoughts remain mostly unresearched. Elisa Belucci aims to shed more light on her works, analyzing and interpreting them in relationship to the theological and socio-political context. In so doing, she fills some gaps present in the research on these authors: firstly, she analyzes the positions presented in the Petersens' work until 1703 at length; secondly, she tries to unearth sources and influences; Thirdly, she seeks to comment on the Petersens' ideas and positions in relationship to the historical context. The result is an entangled picture which questions the traditional distinction between church Pietism and radical Pietism, orthodoxy and radicalism/separatism, showing, instead, that these categories are sometimes too narrow to describe the position of certain authors , such as the Petersens.

Caterina Cornaro was the last of Donizetti's revised melodramas to debut during composer's lifetime. From what we've been able to reconstruct, a host of anomalies regarding the work's ontogeny come to light, including a sudden interruption in Donizetti's work on the opera, which led to what would be, for the composer, an unusually drawn-out undertaking; a change in venues – from Vienna to Naples, over the course of six months; censorial interference that effectively sabotaged the production; and the fact that Donizetti himself did not preside over rehearsals for the only two performances of the opera during the 19th century. Given the opera's beleaguered history, we opted to base the critical edition of Caterina Cornaro on Donizetti's original score, which is to say, the composition that the author sent to production before any third parties meddled with it. Thus, the newly restored version of Gaetano Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro is at long last available to performers and academics. It is surely one of the composer's boldest works from his intense period of experimentation with the melodrama genre, which Donizetti further explored during the final phase of his career.
