Gli studi hanno indicato la presenza di una risposta infiammatoria specifica negli asmatici gravi, tra cui la scarsit di espressione delle classiche citochine di tipo Th-2. In seguito alla stimolazione antigenica, le cellule T CD4+ naive proliferano e si differenziano in varie sottopopolazioni effettrici, quali le cellule Th-1 e Th-2. Recentemente stato identificato un terzo sottogruppo di cellule T CD4+, denominato cellule Th-17, che producono IL-17A e F, IL-6 e TNF-alfa.
