In this book, the fundamentals of magnetism are treated, starting at an introductory level. The origin of magnetic moments, the response to an applied magnetic field, and the various interactions giving rise to different types of magnetic ordering in solids are presented and many examples are given. Crystalline-electric-field effects are treated at a level that is sufficient to provide the basic knowledge necessary in understanding the properties of materials in which these effects play a role. Itinerant-electron magnetism is presented on a similar basis. Particular attention has been given to magnetocrystalline magnetic anisotropy and the magnetocaloric effect. Also, the usual techniques for magnetic measurements are presented. About half of the book is devoted to magnetic materials and the properties that make them suitable for numerous applications. The state of the art is presented of permanent magnets, high-density recording materials, soft-magnetic materials, Invar alloys and magnetostrictive materials. Many references are given.

A causa dell'elevato consumo specifico di materiali magnetici nella produzione di micromacchine, lo sviluppo di una tecnologia priva di scarti per la produzione di nuclei e anime magnetiche con metodi di metallurgia delle polveri una direzione molto promettente. Widespread introduction of automation and robotics in various branches of the national economy has caused intensive growth of production of low-power electric machines. Due to high specific consumption of magnetic materials in production of micromachines, the development of waste-free technology of manufacture of magnetic cores and cores by methods of powder metallurgy is a very promising direction. Use of magnetically soft materials (MMM) produced by powder metallurgy methods allows to reduce losses of electrical steel up to 60% and exclude many labor-intensive operations, automate the technological process and provide the necessary precision of parts dimensions, excluding further finishing machining. In this monograph the main characteristics of magnetic-soft materials, the influence of composition and structure on their properties, magnetic-soft composite materials and composition, structure and properties of MMM used in the production of magnetic cores and cores in electric machine building are considered and studied.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new and still rapidly developing imaging technique which requires a new approach to image interpreta­ tion. Radiologists are compelled to translate their experience accumulat­ ed from X-ray techniques into the language of MRI, and likewise stu­ dents of radiology and interested clinicians need special training in both languages. Out of this necessity emerged the concept of this book as a manual on the application and evaluation of proton MRI for the radiolo­ gist and as a guide for the referring physician who wants to learn about the diagnostic value of MRI in specific conditions. After a short section on the basic principles of MRI, the contrast mechanisms of present-day imaging techniques, knowledge of which is essential for the analysis of relaxation times, are described in greater de­ tail. This is followed by a demonstration of functional neuroanatomy us­ ing three-dimensional view of MR images and a synopsis of frequent neurological symptoms and their topographic correlations, which will fa­ cilitate examination strategy with respect to both accurate diagnosis and economy.
