The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Across black America during the Golden Age of Aviation, John C. Robinson was widely acclaimed as the long-awaited "black Lindbergh." Robinson's fame, which rivaled that of Joe Louis and Jesse Owens, came primarily from his wartime role as the commander of the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force after Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. As the only African American who served during the war's entirety, the Mississippi-born Robinson garnered widespread recognition, sparking an interest in aviation for young black men and women.Known as the "Brown Condor of Ethiopia," he provided a symbolic moral example to an entire generation of African Americans. While white America remained isolationist, Robinson fought on his own initiative against the march of fascism to protect Africa's only independent black nation. Robinson's wartime role in Ethiopia made him America's foremost black aviator.Robinson made other important contributions that predated the Italo-Ethiopian War. After graduating from Tuskegee Institute, Robinson led the way in breaking racial barriers in Chicago, becoming the first black student and teacher at one of the most prestigious aeronautical schools in the United States, the Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical School. In May 1934, Robinson first planted the seed for the establishment of an aviation school at Tuskegee Institute. While Robinson's involvement with Tuskegee was only a small part of his overall contribution to opening the door for blacks in aviation, the success of the Tuskegee Airmen—the first African American military aviators in the U.S. armed forces—is one of the most recognized achievements in twentieth-century African American history.

Of all the Americans who have played a role in the lives of the Sioux, perhaps none has been more intriguing, eccentric, or controversial than Father Francis M. Craft. Bayoneted at the Battle of Gettysburg, trained in medicine, and a former mercenary in the Franco-Prussian War, Father Craft was equally fearless and compassionate, impatient and astute. Called 'Hovering Eagle' by the Sioux, he was not reluctant to speak his mind or even resort to fisticuffs with his charges, but the Father also was remembered by Black Elk as a 'very good man, and not like the other Wasichus'. Father Craft ministered to the Sioux for two decades during the turbulent years after Sitting Bull surrendered at Fort Buford in 1881. Serving at different times on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Standing Rock, and Fort Berthold reservations, he became famous when he was severely wounded at Wounded Knee in 1890.In later years, he struggled to found an Indian sisterhood that could minister to the needs of the Christian Sioux, and railed against government policies that, he contended, encouraged corruption and degradation of Indians. Thomas W.Foley's well-researched and balanced account of Father Craft's fascinating life sheds light on his key role in Sioux and missionary history, on his dedication to Indian causes, and Father Craft's lifelong struggle against personal demons that antagonized many in the church and federal government and led to accusations of insanity by his powerful critics. Thomas W. Foley is a retired labor-personnel executive. He began transcribing Father Craft's journals in the 1960s. Following retirement in the 1990s, Foley and his wife retraced the footsteps of Father Francis M. Craft from the Dakotas to New York, Washington and his final resting place in Milford, Pennsylvania. Subsequent research took them to monasteries in North Dakota, Indiana, and Switzerland; and to archives in Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Rome.

Of all the western frontier figures who played a role in the lives of the Sioux, perhaps none was more intriguing, eccentric, or controversial than Father Francis M. Craft (1852–1920). Both fearless and compassionate, Father Craft ministered to the Sioux for two decades during the turbulent years after Sitting Bull surrendered at Fort Buford in 1881. After recovering from a severe injury at Wounded Knee in 1890, he struggled to found an Indian order of nuns and railed against government policies that, he contended, encouraged the corruption and degradation of Indians. Thomas W. A long-forgotten jungle campaign takes on new life in the troubled mind of John Spenser, a missing soldier’s son. Determined to restore the reputation of the scape-goated general who led the campaign, Spenser comes across a figure large enough to fill the shoes of his absent father. Out of the distant past, that "missing" soldier shows up hoping to heal old wounds, a homecoming that does not end well – for him, his son, or the woman he left behind. “It’s not every day that I read a story about a man on the run with his recently deceased wife’s ashes on the shotgun seat of a rental car, but Tom Doherty’s swift, engrossing novel about a guy for whom life has proceeded mostly without complications – until he finds himself reckoning with his own damaging history – is a page-turner with the feel of an instant classic.” -- Susanna Daniel, author of the PEN award winning novel, STILTSVILLE. “With one master-stroke after another, Thomas Doherty paints a picture so engaging and framed with such modest eloquence, that FATHER WAR reads like a compact, Americanized WAR AND PEACE. Whether writing about jungle combat, horse cavalry drills in the 1930s, or the denizens of a long-abandoned army training camp, Doherty is unflinchingly observant and psychologically at his characters’ very hearts.” -- Eric Larsen, author of AN AMERICAN MEMORY, winner of the Chicago Tribune’s Heartland Prize.

In 1949, after years of nomadic existence, nine-year-old Aeronwy Thomas and her family arrived at the Boat House in Laugharne, a small village on the Welsh coast. Here her father, the poet Dylan Thomas and mother, Caitlin, hoped to find peace, a place to settle and work.In Laugharne Dylan began some of his most famous works, including Under Milk Wood. Mornings were spent in Brown's Hotel, listening to the gossip at Ivy William's kitchen table. In the afternoons Caitlin would lock the poet into a shed in the garden, where he sat speaking his verse aloud as he wrote, or composed begging letters to patrons and friends. Often he would head off to London, and old haunts. Little Aeronwy enjoyed the new world around her. In the Boat House, ruled over by Caitlin, there was baby Colm and in the holidays visits from big brother Llewellyn, as well as Dolly, the cleaner and cook, and the house became a refuge for village characters, including Booda the deaf, mute ferry man. The memoir paints scenes of sudden drama and poetry: reading Wind in the Willows with her father in the evenings; fish treading in the mud below the house with her mother; afternoons with Grandma Flo and DJ at the Pelican. Dylan's fame grows and he tours the United States to read his poetry. Aeronwy watches as the marriage fractures, and at last the poet dies in New York, far away from his children. My Father's Places is a deeply moving portrait of growing up and an insight into the origins and the legacy of Dylan Thomas's poetry.
