Bermuda Ferris Wheel

Bermuda Ferris Wheel

Bryce Berkowitz

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PRESS

Berkowitz's artful poems are stunningly moving. Although there are moments of humor and complexity of tone, the book is not irony-stuffed but decidedly romantic, reminding us of Joe Bolton's work. Berkowitz's awareness of nature throughout Bermuda Ferris Wheel comes from a super-focused attention to detail and texture, indicating a self-consciousness married to an awareness of everything that is other. The author risks sentimentality in some of the "family" poems but is saved by the boldness of his emotional engagement with real people and real places. Any self-absorption that might overwhelm the poems is tempered by the artfulness of the descriptive writing, the poet's strong sense of place, the various manifold localities that serve as the poet's own flawed Eden, redemptive and indicative of failure in equal parts. It's a kind of higher power, this presence that gives life to cities and landscapes and wraps the autobiographical elements of these poems in the glow of significance.Maggie Anderson has written that the poems in Berkowitz's collection "are shrewd, fast-paced and philosophically wise. Bermuda Ferris Wheel is a book of journeying, filled with sudden and rhythmic moments of moving around. Berkowitz documents the places--the streets, the restaurants, the trees--with a passionate looking, and the voice of these poems is that of a Hermes figure, an agile messenger, restless and seeking. Beneath this story lies the spirit of addiction passed down from parent to child. 'Honey, you're just like me', the mother says, as the poet begins to take his place in that sad company. Still, there is an insistent joy here as the Ferris wheel of the title turns and turns in some sunny Bermuda of the heart. Bryce Berkowitz has created a wild unforgettable ride, a stunning debut."

A 10-year survey of the bright, graffiti-inspired abstractions of Keltie Ferris This long-awaited publication is the first major monograph and career retrospective for the celebrated Kentucky-born, Brooklyn-based painter Keltie Ferris (born 1977). Known for his large-scale, energetic, brightly chromatic abstract canvases layered with spray paint and hand-painted geometric fields, Ferris makes staunchly analog paintings that draw inspiration from a range of subjects, from the broken-up pixelation of digital images and rubbed-out graffiti on New York streets to the glimmering city lights visible from his Brooklyn studio at night. He has commented that “bedazzled energy and bright artificial light” are prevalent inspirations for his compositional sensibility, which joyfully deploy “painting’s full arsenal.” This catalog explores the past 10 years of Ferris' career, examining his style and technique in a beautifully bound and visually stimulating volume.

Ten-year-old Star Mackie lives in a trailer park with her flaky mom and her melancholy older sister, Winter, whom Star idolizes. Moving to a new town has made it difficult for Star to make friends, when her classmates tease her because of where she lives and because of her layered blue hair. But when Star starts a poetry club, she develops a love of Emily Dickinson and, through Dickinson’s poetry, learns some important lessons about herself and comes to terms with her hopes for the future. With an unforgettable voice with a lot of heart, Hope Is a Ferris Wheel is the story of a young girl who learns to accept her family and herself while trying to make sense of the world around her.Praise for Hope is a Ferris WheelSTARRED REVIEW "Herrera’s first novel is quite accomplished, with plenty of heart and humor, especially apparent in the spelling assignments Star has to complete but refuses to turn in, as she uses them as a sort of journal. Star is a unique, determined, and loving child making the best of a bad situation; readers cannot help but root for her." --School Library Journal, starred review "Well-constructed, thought-provoking and appealing, this first effort bodes well for the author’s future." --Kirkus Reviews "In her debut, Herrera has created a delightful narrator with a memorable voice and surrounded her with a unique supporting cast. Got fans of Joan Bauer in your neck of the woods? Send them this way." --Booklist "A tender and truthful novel that addresses stereotypes without promising easy answers or cookie-cutter closure." --Publishers Weekly "First-time author Herrera, telling the story from Star’s point of view, gives readers a front-row seat to all the embarrassment and angst of Star’s jumbled life—and all of the triumphs. Here’s hoping we hear more from this author." --The Horn Book Magazine "Star’s contemplation, through poetic metaphors and real-life relationships, of what really matters in her life is compelling. Additionally, the poetry angle offers food for thought for those just coming to understand the power and purpose of metaphor, and Star’s vocabulary assignments, occasionally interspersed between chapters, provide inspiration and entertainment for word-lovers." --Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

One day I happen to be talking to friend of mine whom I worked with. He said to me, "You appeared to have had a very interesting life," another person said, "You should write your memoirs." That made me start thinking about writing a book of our family Genealogy, which Catherine and I became so involved with after arriving in Illinois in May of 1972. I wanted to show and average man's life, my life, and the times that I lived in. The struggles, dreams, good times, sad times, and love in my life. Also the love that God had given me for the music that is so dear to my heart. And also to show a little of the lives of people who belonged to a different time (19th century). My understanding of the happenings and situations during their times
