It has been long awaited, but Florian Hüttner, collaborator for 25 years and co-operator of the gallery for landscape art in Hamburg, finally has a first survey exhibition. Curated by Till Krause, the show resembles a well-tended garden. Boskette, bushes, waysides, fences and a viewing platform arranged in the huge space of the former Wandelhalle in Bad Tölz. Visitors can stroll through the multi-layered work: Paintings are packed, crates are painted, painted crates float on rivers. Paintings, map cityscapes, drawings cut into landscapes, sound transmissions from underground. Drawings, sound transmissions from underground streams.... a partisan frescoed partisan ambush in the Alps.... The book, conceived and designed by the artist himself, documents the exhibition and goes further into the original context of the works shown. Thus, this artist book is supplemented with images of very different places and exhibition contexts. Text in English and German.

Text in German and Chinese. Architects usually try to create "finished" buildings, i.e. coherent works of architecture for eternity. But does this claim stand up to reality? Should that be the claim at all? After all, it cannot be ruled out that the building will change after completion. Inspired by references from architectural history, art and anthropology, the young Kaiser Shen studio developed various theses at the beginning of its practice and tested them on the basis of its own projects. Central to this is the question of how buildings change in their lifespan due to external influences and what this change means for permanence in architecture and for the idea of space. In earlier times, it was common practice to build on existing structures. Thus, in most buildings that have survived for several centuries, countless layers of time overlap. This can be seen particularly clearly in the additions and conversions of cathedrals, for example. Due to new framework conditions and requirements for use, buildings were always pragmatically developed further in the currently valid architectural style. Often, only experts are able to distinguish between the different time periods. Only a few buildings are considered so outstanding by society that they are conserved and musealised in a fixed time layer. However, such conservation is rather unnatural and can only be justified in exceptional cases. In this book, therefore, promising strategies are to be pointed out as to how "unfinished" houses, with rooms lacking special qualities, can be further built and adapted to the present framework conditions. For Atelier Kaiser Shen, a good structure means developing a future-proof spatial idea, and this cannot be reduced to the supporting structure. When building further, it should be possible to build on this architectural-spatial idea. Since a conversion can even destroy it in extreme cases, it is important to create a potential that is recognised and taken up by those who continue to build. Ideally, the building should have such a strong spatial idea that it can survive future renovations and still be viable. Stuttgart-based Atelier Kaiser Shen was founded in 2017 by Florian Kaiser and Guobin Shen and works on projects of various scales. Their work has been awarded various prizes, including the Hugo-Häring-Auszeichnung 2020 and a recognition at the BDA-Architekturpreis max 40 for young architects. Parallel to their work in the studio, Florian Kaiser and Guobin Shen taught at the University of Stuttgart from 2014 to 2021.
Florian Lechner
Glass is a threshold material, serving as both a divider and an opening, for one can always see what is behind it. This is a unique phenomenon and it is confounding, as well as being alluring and enhancing, making the space breathe. Florian Lechner, born in 1938, has dedicated himself to this unique material. He explores its substance and formal possibilities through architectural works and sculptural objects. He also experiments with it in combination with the media of light, sound and movement. For him it is essential to forge his work single-handedly, because only unrestricted personal creative input and the development of one's own, often innovative ways of working can ensure an authentic result. However, the concepts behind his works and their spiritual roots are always more important to him than the process of their creation. Intellectual significance defines Florian Lechner as an artist. His takes an intellectual and philosophically motivated approach, but the result is always a sensory experience and never dominated by dry theory. Text in English & German.
