SEVEN PILLARS OF PEACEThe wisdom of Archbishop Sheen is still winning the day. The things he wrote and said on the radio in 1944 are coming true. The reflections contained in this work are a collection of Sheen's Catholic Hour radio addresses from 1944 that were heard by millions of listeners each week. These reflections are a series of short essays that addressed the many concerns of the listeners of his day during the war.Sheen answers questions about the following topics: THE PILLAR OF GOOD WILLTHE PILLAR OF MORALITYTHE PILLAR OF PROPERTYTHE PILLAR OF PERSONALITYTHE PILLAR OF FAMILYTHE PILLAR OF FREEDOMTHE PILLAR OF WORLD UNITYHis were some of the most clearly delineated investigations into the underlying causes of the war combined with an entirely sound and hopeful program for winning both the war and the even more important peace are found in them. These powerful reflections can be most heartily recommended for their wise counsel, sane and penetrating analysis, and logical conclusions.Sheen addresses the vexation felt by a great mass of people who were frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries about the war. Like a master surgeon, Sheen applied the sharp scalpel of his crystal-clear logic to lay open the sources of the world's infection. In his book titled 'Seven Pillars of Peace', Sheen presents the principles upon which he believes the foundations for a just and lasting peace must be built after the hostilities of war are ended.Sheen is firm in his conviction that real peace cannot be declared, it must be made. It is with peace-making and the fundamental conditions on which peace must be based that this book is concerned. In its seven forceful and readable chapters, it challenges the theory of many planners today who posture that military allies are necessarily political allies; it affirms that a common hatred can make nations allies, but only a common love can make them neighbors; it denies the primacy of action over reason, in the sense that the will of the state is that which makes a state right; and it contends that utility does not establish justice, but it is justice which makes utility. With the same lucid and persuasive reasoning that has made him outstanding both as a writer and as a lecturer, Sheen continues to challenge people of goodwill to unite for the preservation of personal rights, freedom of conscience, human justice, and civilization itself - all of which are in danger in the present conflict. Here, one will recognize the urgency of Sheen's subject matter, and will find pillars of peace and promise in his far-sighted principles.

J.M.J.THE HOLY HOUR PRAYER BOOKCould you not watch one hour with me?Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, when he was ordained, made a promise to make a Holy Hour daily before the Blessed Sacrament. For sixty years of his priesthood, he kept that promise. It was during his Holy Hour that he learned to listen and abandon himself totally to God's call.He always encouraged this practice in others, even non-Catholics. His strong convictions on the benefits of time spent in Eucharistic adoration were a powerful example to religious and laity alike. Of this practice he states: "The Holy Hour is not a devotion; it is a sharing in the work of redemption. 'Could you not watch one hour with me' Not for an hour of activity did He plead, but for an hour of companionship."Some might ask, "Why spend an hour a day in meditation?" to which Archbishop Sheen would respond, "Because we are living on the surface of our souls, knowing little either of God or our inner self. Our knowledge is mostly about things, not about destiny."Here Archbishop Sheen will share a number of his recommended prayers and meditations that will elicit some "heart speaks to heart" moments and encourage the reader to "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you".Few books are such an inspiring call to sanctity, and few books are such a spiritual powerhouse. With Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen as your guide you will also learn: Why Make a Holy HourHow to Make a Holy HourThe Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus ChristHow Christ Lives in Us TodayHow the Divine Life is Lost and our Final EndThe Duty of Self-DenialGiving Glory to God in the WorldThe Eucharist; The Need of Our HeartOur Blessed MotherYou will also discover how to make your Holy Hours more efficacious and master a variety of other techniques that Archbishop Sheen employed in his own fruitful quest for holiness. The saintly Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will unveil often overlooked riches in other everyday Catholic prayers, transforming them from rote recitations into powerful moments of communion with God.

The Cross and the CrisisToday the world stands at a crossroad. Two paths stretch out toward the future. One leads to moral and religious ruin: the other to the salvation of civilization and culture. Down one, men will walk in the comradeship of anti-Christ, up the other in the brotherhood of Christ. There is no middle course. As Fulton Sheen puts it, the choice is between "an organic spiritual unity and an organic technical unity, or between a philosophy of life which says that man is a potential child of God and a philosophy of life which says there is no God but Caesar...."In these ten vigorous, thought-provoking discussions the choice is suggested with sane and convincing logic.I. SPIRITUAL BANKRUPTCY II. THE LAST BATTLE III. THE PRIMACY OF THE SPIRITUAL IV. MORE ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL V. THE BREAD OF THE FATHER'S HOME VI. THE AUTHORITY OF THE FATHER'S HOUSE VII. THE SENSE OF SINVIII. THE CHURCH AND THE STATE IX. SEEKING FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD X. OUR OPPORTUNITY AND OUR RESPONSIBILITY The problem of the salvation of civilization and culture is treated by an analogical treatment of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The parable is applied to a world that has withdrawn from Christ and squandered its inheritance of salvation and culture on the purely material. Salvation for the world, Fulton Sheen points out, will come only through its penitent return to its Father's house.Fulton J. Sheen needs no introduction to the reading public. Author of many significant books, lecturer, radio speaker, holder of a long list of academic degrees, intimately associated with both the University of Louvain and the Catholic University of America, he is indeed one of our most distinguished contemporary men of letters. In THE CROSS AND THE CRISIS, he makes yet another notable contribution to the enrichment of our intellectual life.

Father Forgive Them For They Know Not What They Do
"Father, Forgive Them For They Know Not What They Do." (Luke 23:34) Meditations on the First Word from the Cross by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen For years, Archbishop Sheen gave a series of powerful presentations on Christ's Passion and His seven last words from the Cross. As a Scripture scholar, Archbishop Sheen knew full well the power contained in preaching Christ crucified. With St. Paul, he could say, "For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Cor. 2:2). During his last recorded Good Friday address in 1979, Archbishop Sheen spoke of having given this type of reflection on the subject of Christ's seven last words from the Cross "for the fifty-eighth consecutive time." Whether from the young priest in Peoria, Illinois, the university professor in Washington, D.C., or the bishop in New York, Sheen's messages were sure to make an indelible mark on his listeners. Given their importance and the impact they had on society, it seemed appropriate to bring together in this anthology some of Archbishop Sheen's meditations on the Seven Last Words Our Blessed Lord spoke from the Cross on Calvary. This anthology has been arranged to provide nine unique reflections for study and meditation on the words "Father, Forgive Them For They Know Not What They Do." (Luke 23:34) These meditations are taken from several books and articles written by Sheen between 1933 and 1945. As the readers ponder these reflections, they might have to pause for a moment or two over a sentence that is full of deep meaning that stirs the heart. They might also find that Archbishop Sheen has repeated certain lines throughout these reflections to drive home a point or an important theme, as any good teacher would do. CALVARY AND THE MASSFulton J. Sheen will present a collection of his writings that will encourage the reader to better understand the transformative power of the Eucharist and the beauty of the Mass.We were there then during that Crucifixion. The drama was already completed as far as the vision of Christ was concerned, but it had not yet been unfolded to all men and all places and all times. If a motion picture reel, for example, were conscious of itself, it would know the drama from beginning to end, but the spectators in the theatre would not know it until they had seen it unrolled upon the screen. In like manner, our Lord on the Cross saw His eternal mind, the whole drama of history, the story of each individual soul and how later on it would react to His Crucifixion; but though He saw all, we could not know how we would react to the Cross until we were unrolled upon the screen of time. We were not conscious of being present there on Calvary that day, but He was conscious of our presence. Today we know the role we played in the theatre of Calvary, by the way, we live and act now in the theatre of the twentieth century. That is why Calvary is actual; why the Cross is the Crisis; why in a certain sense the scars are still open; why Pain still stands deified, and why blood like falling stars is still dropping upon our souls. There is no escaping the Cross, not even by denying it as the Pharisees did; not even by selling Christ as Judas did; not even by crucifying Him as the executioners did. We all see it, either to embrace it in salvation or to fly from it into misery. But how is it made visible? Where shall we find Calvary perpetuated? We shall find Calvary renewed, re-enacted, re-presented, as we have seen, in the Mass. Calvary is one with the Mass, and the Mass is one with Calvary, for in both there is the same Priest and Victim. The Seven Last Words are like the seven parts of the Mass. And just as there are seven notes in music admitting an infinite variety of harmonies and combinations, so too on the Cross there are seven divine notes, which the dying Christ rang down the centuries, all of which combine to form the beautiful harmony of the world's redemption. Each word is a part of the Mass.THE CONFITEORFather, forgive them for they know not what they do.THE OFFERTORYAmen, I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.THE SANCTUSWoman, behold thy son.THE CONSECRATIONMy God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?THE COMMUNIONI thirst.THE ITE, MISSA ESTIt is consummated.THE LAST GOSPELFather, into thy hands I commend my spirit.

This book is a collection of sermons from Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen where he speaks about seven different groups of people found at the foot of the cross at Calvary over 2,000 years ago and how these groups are still present today. There are millions of souls in this great country of ours who have no religion whatsoever. Their attitudes vary from an earnest yearning for religion to an intense hatred of it. It is quite possible that all of them could be reduced to seven distinct categories. Our Lord spoke seven times from the Cross - and these are called His Seven Last Words. But those who were on Calvary's Hill that afternoon addressed seven words to Him on the Cross, thus revealing the seven different impacts the Cross makes on souls. The seven words, which Our Lord spoke from the Cross were not specific answers to specific challenges, but they do reveal lessons applicable to the challenge.TO THE HUMANISTS"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."TO THE SINNERS "This day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise."TO THE SELFISH"Woman, behold thy son (Son) Behold thy mother "TO THE INTELLIGENTSIA"My God My God Why hast Thou hast abandoned Me?"TO THE MODERNS"I thirst."TO THE SENSATIONALISTS"It is finished."TO THE THINKERS"Father, into Thy Hands, I commend My Spirit."Archbishop Fulton J.
