Of G-Men and Eggheads

John Rodden

University of Illinois Press
2017
sidottu
Spy romances of Cold War counterespionage evoke scenes of heroic FBI and CIA agents dedicated to smashing communism and its subversive coterie of intellectual fellow travelers bent on painting the world red. John Rodden cuts this tall tale down to its authentic pint size, refusing to indulge the public relations myth promoted by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. In Of G-Men and Eggheads, Rodden portrays federal agents’ hilarious obsession with monitoring that ever-present threat to national security, the American literary intellectual. Drawing on government dossiers and archives, Rodden focuses on the onetime members of a radical political sect of ex-Trotskyists (barely numbering a thousand at its height), the so-called New York intellectuals. He describes the nonsensical decades-long pursuit of this group of intellectuals, especially Lionel Trilling, Dwight Macdonald, and Irving Howe. The Keystone Cops style of numerous FBI agents is documented carefully in Rodden's meticulous case studies of how Hoover's men recruited informants to snoop on the "Commies," opened their personal mail, tracked their movements, and reported on their wives and friends. In a rich and stimulating epilogue, Rodden shows how his Cold War research possesses thought-provoking implications for us today, in our post-9/11 era of debates about data collection, privacy invasion, personal dignity, and the use and abuse of government and corporate power.

Between the wars a personality cult grew around Masaryk. These three volumes constitute the first balanced critical assessment of the actual achievement of the university professor who became the first president of Czechoslovakia. In this the first volume scholars from Europe and North America offer new insights into the career and ideas of Masaryk during the three decades preceding the outbreak of World War I. They appraise his role as critic of injustice and outworn tradition, providing a most significant interpretation of his place in modern history.

Gary Hillmann is the G MANN. He is a federal government engineer working for the United States Transportation Department. The G MANN is a transplant from the Midwest relocated to the Southwest. The desert and the work suit him except for one glaring issue...the corrupt politics.Bryan Baker is Gary's right-hand man in the office and assigned to the most expensive transportation project in state history, a commuter train, the T'rrain Trekker, between Capitol City and Allentown. This seemingly harmless infrastructure project has a catch; it is the state governor's centerpiece in his run for the Presidency. Bryan and Gary, the feds, take the brunt of project level heat as they battle the governor's henchmen attempting expedite the construction. Under tacit orders from the governor to just get it done, construction moves forward. The feds are deliberative in their decision-making contrary to the governor's schedule. Patrick Ruiz is the project construction engineer from Laramie Engineering, the company hired to construct the train. He is teamed with an Allentown public planner, Casey Baxter. Casey is an ambitious young mother of two competing in the male dominated world of transportation. Casey and Patrick are the point-people on the ground managing the governor's dirty work.Gary and Bryan both deal with rocky relationships in their personal lives with their girlfriends. Bryan is injured in a bicycle crash and is reunited with his girlfriend. As difficult as their relationships are, work is even more trying. When a whistleblower comes forward with information regarding falsified concrete testing reports, things begin to unravel. An explosion at Gary's house sends him to the emergency room and a conclusion that it was an assassination attempt. Soon after, Bryan is traveling with the state whistleblower when they are run off a winding mountain road. The whistleblower is dead in the crash and Bryan is left recovering with a second broken leg.Casey Baxter reaches her breaking point and jumps to her death off the Rio Caballo Gorge Bridge. Losing her and Patrick's clandestine relationship is enough to push the man over the edge. In an Old West style showdown of good and evil, Patrick and Gary square off for all the marbles.

What do you do if a co-worker won't stop listening to Kenny G all day?If you're Aliester Crewley, you do the obvious thing: You raise John Coltrane as a zombie to kill him. But what if Kenny G won't stay dead? And worse, what if all of this mystical meddling accidentally starts the apocalypse? One thing is for sure, it'll take more than the help of Keith Richards (the most powerful magician on earth) to stop Britanny Spears and her army of flying monkeys from turning earth into a pile of rubble.Don't be fooled into thinking Kenny G Must Die is just a funny bit of satire. It could, in fact, be a brilliantly disguised piece of prophecy. Think about it- how can music that bad be so popular?
