For the past 30 years I have been teaching lipid biochemistry to'inedical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The major topics covered in my courses were fatty acids, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, phospholipids, glyco­ lipids, triacylglycerols, cholesterol, bile acids, and plasma lipoproteins. Empha­ sis was placed on the regulation and disorders of lipid metabolism. The latter included hyperlipidemias, atherosclerosis, and alcohol-induced liver damage. In this volume, I have chosen to focus on the disorders of lipid metabolism at a level appropriate both for medical students and for graduate and undergradu­ ate students majoring in the biological sciences. The biochemistry, nutrition, genetics, and cell biology aspects of lipids and lipid metabolism will be covered as they relate to lipid disorders. I am not aware of any textbook that integrates the disorders of lipid metabolism in this manner. Chapter 1 includes a brief discussion of the basic structures, properties, and metabolism of lipids. This chapter is not very detailed, since the material covered is available in basic textbooks on biochemistry. The major fpcus of this volume is the various lipid disorders, with emphasis on polyunsaturated fatty acids, the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the hyperlipidemias, dietary and drug therapy for the hyperlipidemias, and alcohol-induced liver damage. The material presented has been obtained from several textbooks on biochemistry and from a variety of recent articles in the scientific literature.
Ion-Exchange Sorption and Preparative Chromatography of Biologically Active Molecules
This book deals with the physico-chemical principles underlying ion­ exchange sorption and chromatog~aphy. It does not cover in any detail the experimental and instrumental aspects of practical separations. The author has developed the subject starting from the synthesis and structure of the ion exchangers employed, through the thermodynamics of sorption selectivity and the equilibrium dynamics of ion sorption, to the kinetics and dynamics of non-equilibrium ion-exchange systems. Throughout this treatment the additional factors arising from the exchange of complex organic ions, as opposed to simple mineral ones, have been interwoven. The author has stressed the application in the separation of organic ions with biological activity, many of which are synthesized in biotechnological processes, and in view of this he uses the expression "physico-chemical biotechnology." In practice, however, his in-depth treatment is applicable to any charged organic species with multifunction­ ality and/or high molecular weight, and is therefore by no means restricted to biologically active materials, and certainly not to those molecules from a biotechnological source. Bearing this in mind, the text has a much wider value than the title may convey.

Special problems are presented to prospographers and historians of the Roman Republic who attempt to determine the chronological structure of Cicero’s Brutus. Over two hundred orators who figured actively in Roman politics from the time of the Punic Wars to that of Civil War are cited in the dialogue. Professor Sumner presents their probable birth-dates and careers in the form of a register, followed by a commentary concentrating on the controversial points in the Brutus, to give a systematic basis to our understanding of the problems of the historical aspects of the dialogue and Cicero’s organization of it. Professor Sumner has worked primarily from the historian’s viewpoint. In his words: ‘the study of the chronological structure of the Brutus should be considered the vertebra of the monograph, but the body of the work is the prosopographical commentary, while the examination of Cicero’s prosoporgraphical and chronographic resources and methods is an essential adjunct.’ For scholars and students of early Rome this analysis is a valuable addition to current knowledge.

Nanochemistry is a science connected with obtaining and studying of physical-chemical properties of particles having sizes on the nanometer scale. This book addresses polymer synthesis which, according to Melikhov's classification, is automatically part of nanochemistry. This is determined as far as polymeric macromolecules (more precisely macromolecular coils) belong to nanoparticles and polymeric sols and gels - to nanosystems. Catalysis on nanoparticles is one of the most important sections of nanochemistry. The majority of catalytic systems are nanosystems. At heterogeneous catalysis the active substance is tried to deposit on carrier in nanoparticles form in order to increase their specific surface. At homogeneous catalysis active substance molecules have often in themselves nanometer sizes. The most favorable conditions for homogeneous catalysis are created when reagent molecules are adsorbed rapidly by nanoparticles and are desorbed slowly but have high surface mobility and, consequently, high reaction rate on the surface and at the reaction molecules of such structure are formed at which desorption rate is increased sharply. If these conditions are realised in nanosystem with larger probability than in macrosystem, then nanocatalyst has the raising activity that was observed for many systems.

Fractal analysis gives just general mathematical description of polymers, i.e. it does not identify structural units (elements), from which any real polymer is formed. Physical description of thermodynamically non-equilibrium polymer structure in the framework of the local order ideas gives the cluster model of the polymer amorphous state structure that quantitatively identify its elements. Since these models consider the polymer structure somewhat from two sides, they are excellent completing one another. It is common knowledge that structures displaying fractal behaviour on small length scale and being homogeneous on large length scale are named homogeneous fractals. These fractals are percolation clusters at the percolation threshold. As shown below, the cluster structure represents the percolation system and, due to the above-said, the homogeneous fractal. To put it differently, the presence of the local order in the condensed phase of polymers determines fractality of their structures.

The interest in polymer composites research is due to their enlarged application. Filling with hard particles gives to polymers a number of desirable properties: increases hardness, decreases heat expansion coefficient, improves resistance to creep and fracture toughness. Difficulties in structure-properties relationships researching for polymer composites are due to their structure complexity. Till now, composites studies were conducted within the frameworks of continuum mechanics and thermodynamic conceptions. However, these conceptions applications does not allow satisfactory descriptions nor predictions of such materials properties. As a matter of fact, an experimental data set dictates one or another physical model of structure choice for composites macroscopic properties description.
