Gabriele Rothemann: Works (Bilingual edition)
“A single decision is enough to fundamentally, genuinely fundamentally, rethink and change everything.” Gabriele Rothemann’s photographs do not simply depict an object or a situation, but rather carve out the unseen: a relationship to things long gone, a connection to times past and spaces lost. In each image resonates the reverberation of other images, in each, a wealth of possibilities of how the world can be perceived and represented is condensed. Since 1984, the Vienna-based artist has used the medium of photography in a way that does not freeze the object, but fills it with imaginary life. Rothmann’s work revolves around existential questions—especially the most fundamental of them all: the finitude of life. Often abstract and precise, yet at the same time full of rich detail, her motifs from her series Dead Animals to her Miniatures about Disappearance take on a haunting presence. Thus she appeals to the empathy of her viewers and touches them not least through the sensual quality of her images, their clear-cut visual language and expressive beauty.
Gabriele Muenter
Filled with the vibrant color that is the hallmark of Mu¨nter’s oeuvre, this dynamic consideration of the German painter offers a lively and detailed analysis of her life, work, and contributions to modern painting. While Mu¨nter is most often linked to Wassily Kandinsky and the Blue Rider movement, this book offers a refreshing appreciation of her work in its own right. Multifaceted, imaginative, and stylistically diverse, Mu¨nter’s creative output spanned genres to include portraits, landscapes, interiors, and abstractions. Beautifully reproduced images allow readers to marvel at Mu¨nter’s joyful vibrant hues, her bold brushstrokes and her experimental and innovative approach to painting. Lively texts offer important biographical insights into her artistic evolution and place her work in the broader context of modern art. Comprehensive and insightful, this newly formatted edition pays tribute to a hugely influential woman artist whose work is all too often overlooked.
Gabriele Kutschera
The techniques used to forge iron and precious metal are a key theme in the work of Viennese artist Gabriele Kutschera (b. 1950). Starting out with jewellery creations related to the body, she turned to spatially related, forged iron sculptures from the 1990s. The rhythmical process of altering the cross-section of an industrially prefabricated iron rod is a defining factor of her metalsmithing: by hammering and annealing - the creation and release of the metal's stresses - she is able to shape the material. Kutschera translates this sequential processing into her expressive works. The perception of time and change is her chief motif, which she also addresses in her paper works Timelines. Gabriele Kutschera documents the distinguished Austrian artist's works in iron sculpture, jewellery and paper from 2000 to 2018. Text in English and German.
