Gilbert & George and the Communists

Gilbert & George and the Communists

James Birch; Micheal Hodges

Cheerio Publishing

nidottu
James Birch has been a promoter of modern art for over thirty years and boasts a resume of exhibitions both throughout the UK and internationally. The first gallerist to show works by Grayson Perry and the neo-naturists, James was also a close friend of Francis Bacon, Gilbert & George, Denis Wirth-Miller and Genesis P-Orridge. Written with the journalist Michael Hodges – whose work has appeared in the Sunday Times, the Financial Times, the New Statesman and Esquire – Gilbert & George and the Communists is more than just a picaresque and deeply funny riot through art history: it is an account of a world unthinkably different to – and ever-present in - our own today.

Fundamentals of Developmental Psychobiology

Fundamentals of Developmental Psychobiology

Fundamentals of Developmental Psychobiology: A Brief Account of an Interdisciplinary Science demonstrates how the science of Developmental Psychobiology (DBP) improves our understanding of non-human and human behavioral and psychological development, with consequences for better health care, animal husbandry, ecological conservation, and education. The fundamentals of DPB include the natural history orientation in research and a historical stance to investigating development. The interests/aims of the researcher of natural history reflect four questions that may be asked about any behavioral pattern: about its phylogeny, adaptiveness, proximate causes, and development. The book provides the reader with a solid understanding of how physiological, biomechanical, and experiential processes are united in the organization of the developmental trajectories that create behavioral and psychological abilities and traits. These fundamentals distinguish DPB from other developmental disciplines that integrate biological and psychological information. With the world facing human-generated climate change, a sixth major extinction of species, widespread human famine, poverty, disease, wars of tribalism, nationalism, religion, and politics, why write a book on some esoteric topic about psychological development? We live in a world with about a third of the human population living in medieval-like conditions, while the rest struggle with the current fear de jour of the Literati (e.g., a rebellious Artificial Intelligence). The continued accumulation of scientific knowledge about how the universe works (and that includes how organisms develop their traits and abilities) is the greatest accomplishment of human thinking and curiosity. DPB and understanding how traits develop will become an important aspect of any solution that humans manage to apply to the world's problems. It provides a perspective on development that is under-appreciated, but which can lead to important advancements in developmental science. Developmental Psychobiology is about DPB as a science for understanding psychological development that could serve as another perspective from which to examine humanity's problems.

Neurobiology of Addiction is conceived as a current survey and synthesis of the most important findings in our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction over the past 50 years. The book includes a scholarly introduction, thorough descriptions of animal models of addiction, and separate chapters on the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction for psychostimulants, opioids, alcohol, nicotine and cannabinoids. Key information is provided about the history, sources, and pharmacokinetics and psychopathology of addiction of each drug class, as well as the behavioral and neurobiological mechanism of action for each drug class at the molecular, cellular and neurocircuitry level of analysis. A chapter on neuroimaging and drug addiction provides a synthesis of exciting new data from neuroimaging in human addicts — a unique perspective unavailable from animal studies. The final chapters explore theories of addiction at the neurobiological and neuroadaptational level both from a historical and integrative perspective. The book incorporates diverse finding with an emphasis on integration and synthesis rather than discrepancies or differences in the literature.

Drugs, Addiction, and the Brain explores the molecular, cellular, and neurocircuitry systems in the brain that are responsible for drug addiction. Common neurobiological elements are emphasized that provide novel insights into how the brain mediates the acute rewarding effects of drugs of abuse and how it changes during the transition from initial drug use to compulsive drug use and addiction. The book provides a detailed overview of the pathophysiology of the disease. The information provided will be useful for neuroscientists in the field of addiction, drug abuse treatment providers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in learning the diverse effects of drugs of abuse on the brain.

Cannabis, Volume Five in the Neurobiology of Addiction series, explores the molecular and cellular systems in the brain that are responsible for both nicotine and marijuana addiction. The book includes thorough descriptions of the physiological effects and behavioral effects of nicotine and marijuana addiction. The authors clearly define the neurobiological effects into three distinct steps: Binge/Intoxication Stage, Withdrawal/Negative Affect Stage, and finally, the Preoccupation/Anticipation Stage.

A current survey and synthesis of the most important findings in our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction is detailed in our Neurobiology of Addiction series, each volume addressing a specific area of addiction. ALCOHOL, Volume 3 in the series, explores the molecular, cellular, and neurocircuitry systems in the brain responsible for alcohol addiction using the heuristic three-stage cycle framework of binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative affect, and preoccupation/anticipation.
