Between Power and Irrelevance

Between Power and Irrelevance

Geopolitical shifts, increasing demands for accountability, and growing competition have been driving the need for change within transnational nongovernmental organizations (TNGOs). As the world has changed and TNGOs' ambitions have expanded, the roles of TNGOs have shifted and their work has become more complex. To remain effective, legitimate, and relevant in the future necessitates organizational changes, but many TNGOs have been slow to adapt. As a result, the sector's rhetoric of sustainable impact and social transformation has far outpaced the reality of TNGOs' more limited abilities to deliver on their promises. Between Power and Irrelevance openly explores why this gap between rhetoric and reality exists and what TNGOs can do individually and collectively to close it. George E. Mitchell, Hans Peter Schmitz, and Tosca Bruno-van Vijfeijken argue that TNGOs need to change the fundamental conditions under which they operate by bringing their own "forms and norms" into better alignment with their ambitions and strategies. This book offers accessible, future-oriented analyses and lessons-learned to assist practitioners and other stakeholders in formulating and implementing organizational changes. Drawing upon a variety of perspectives, including hundreds of interviews with TNGO leaders, firsthand involvement in major organizational change processes in leading TNGOs, and numerous workshops, training institutes, consultancies, and research projects, the book examines how to adapt TNGOs for the future.

This title is updated with a new Preface. Fifteen minutes before five o'clock on Good Friday, 1998, Senator George Mitchell was informed that his long and difficult quest for an Irish peace effort had succeeded - the Protestants and Catholics of Northern Ireland, and the governments of the Republic of Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, would sign the agreement. Now Mitchell, who served as independent chairman of the peace talks for the length of the process, tells us the inside story of the grueling road to this momentous accord and the subsequent developments that may threaten, or strengthen, the chance for a lasting peace in Northern Ireland.

Oasis and Casbah: Algerian Culture and Personality in Change is a book written by Horace Mitchell Miner, an American anthropologist. The book explores the culture and personality of Algerians during the period of political and social change in the 1950s and 1960s. The author draws on his fieldwork in two different regions of Algeria, the oasis and the casbah, to provide a detailed account of the social, economic, and political factors that shaped Algerian society during this period.Miner examines the traditional way of life in the oasis and how it was affected by the introduction of modern technology and the influence of French colonialism. He also explores the cultural and social dynamics of the casbah, the urban center of Algerian life, and how it was affected by the struggle for independence from France. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the Algerian personality and how it was shaped by the country's history, culture, and politics. Miner argues that the Algerian personality is characterized by a deep sense of pride, resilience, and a strong attachment to traditional values.Overall, Oasis and Casbah: Algerian Culture and Personality in Change is a fascinating study of a country in transition and the cultural and social factors that shaped its people during a critical period in its history. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Algerian culture, anthropology, and the history of North Africa.Anthropological Papers, Museum Of Anthropology, No. 15.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The Negotiator

The Negotiator

Compelling, poignant, enlightening stories from former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell about growing up in Maine, his years in the Senate, working to bring peace to Northern Ireland and the Middle East, and what he's learned about the art of negotiation during every stage of his life. It's a classic story of the American Dream. George Mitchell grew up in a working class family in Maine, experiencing firsthand the demoralizing effects of unemployment when his father was laid off from a lifelong job. But education was always a household priority, and Mitchell embraced every opportunity that came his way, eventually becoming the ranking Democrat in the Senate during the administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Told with wit, frankness, and a style all his own, Senator Mitchell's memoir reveals many insights into the art of negotiation. Mitchell looks back at his adventures in law and politics-including instrumental work on clean air and water legislation, the Iran-Contra hearings, and healthcare reform-as well as life after the Senate, from leading the successful Northern Ireland peace process, to serving as chairman of The Walt Disney Company, to heading investigations into the use of steroids in baseball and unethical activity surrounding the Olympic Games. Through it all, Senator Mitchell's incredible stories-some hilarious, others tragic, all revealing-offer invaluable insights into critical moments in the last half-century of business, law, and politics, both domestic and international.
A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East
The "illuminating" (Los Angeles Times) answer to why Israel and Palestine's attempts at negotiation have failed and a practical, "admirably measured" (The New York Times) roadmap for bringing peace to the Middle East--by an impartial American diplomat experienced in solving international conflicts. George Mitchell knows how to bring peace to troubled regions. He was the primary architect of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement for peace in Northern Ireland. But when he served as US Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from 2009 to 2011--working to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict--diplomacy did not prevail. Now, for the first time, Mitchell offers his insider account of how the Israelis and the Palestinians have progressed (and regressed) in their negotiations through the years and outlines the specific concessions each side must make to finally achieve lasting peace.
