Becoming Neighbors in a Mexican American Community
Gilda L. Ochoa

On the surface, Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants to the United States seem to share a common cultural identity but often make uneasy neighbors. Discrimination and assimilationist policies have influenced generations of Mexican Americans so that some now fear that the status they have gained by assimilating into American society will be jeopardized by Spanish-speaking newcomers. Other Mexican Americans, however, adopt a position of group solidarity and work to better the social conditions and educational opportunities of Mexican immigrants. Focusing on the Mexican-origin, working-class city of La Puente in Los Angeles County, California, this book examines Mexican Americans' everyday attitudes toward and interactions with Mexican immigrants-a topic that has so far received little serious study. Using in-depth interviews, participant observations, school board meeting minutes, and other historical documents, Gilda Ochoa investigates how Mexican Americans are negotiating their relationships with immigrants at an interpersonal level in the places where they shop, worship, learn, and raise their families. This research into daily lives highlights the centrality of women in the process of negotiating and building communities and sheds new light on identity formation and group mobilization in the U.S. and on educational issues, especially bilingual education. It also complements previous studies on the impact of immigration on the wages and employment opportunities of Mexican Americans.
This book, beyond dealing with the theoretical and technical questions concerning the termination of analysis, gives a picture of the particular nature of the psychoanalytic cure in relation to the therapies that have come forth from psychoanalytic roots. The theoretical work is supported by rich clinical details.

Abstract: Incest victims often seek counseling as adults for relief from a variety of difficulties. Once in counseling, some victims avoid disclosing incest to their counselors, while others disclose and resolve conflicts associated with incest. The purpose of this study was to identify and explore factors that assist female adult incest clients in disclosure and exploration of incest during counseling. Clients' background factors, counselors' characteristics, attitudes, and behaviors, and other factors were investigated. Thirty-seven women who were sexually abused during childhood by family members and who had visited counselors in the past three years participated in this study. Each subject completed a structured interview and a Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory (BLRI) Demographic and incest data were described. Variables of interest such as client background factors, factors related to childhood disclosure, counselors' characteristics, counselors' reactions to incest disclosure, impact of disclosure and counselors 1 reactions on subjects, and other variables that might be related to disclosure were obtained from the interview. The BLRI was used as a measure of clients' perceptions of counselor characteristics. No relationship was found between disclosure of incest during counseling as adults and three client background factors: age of onset of incest, close relationships during childhood, and satisfaction with childhood counseling. Reactions that subjects received when they disclosed during childhood were not found to be related to disclosure of incest during counseling as adults. No relationship was found between disclosure of incest to counselors and perceptions of counselor characteristics prior to disclosure. Counselor characteristics that were helpful to subjects in disclosing and discussing incest were described. No relationship was established between counselors' reactions to subjects' disclosure and the amount of time spent discussing incest for the duration of counseling. Subjects' belief that incest was the main issue to discuss in counseling was not found to be related to disclosure of incest to counselors. Subjects disclosed most frequently when they thought they would feel better by disclosing, someone encouraged them to disclose to counselors, and/or when counselors asked them directly. Implications for training, practice, and research were discussed. Creativity is the theme connecting the many chapters of the author's life journey, with over 300 drawings, paintings and photographs illustrating the story. Inspired by her daughter's request to introduce her to the artist she was before becoming a mother, this intimate memoir includes her growing up in a leftist immigrant Jewish family in the fifties, her education and training as an artist, studies in Germany in 1958, and a year of drawing and painting in Europe in 1962. The cultural climate of the sixties significantly changed the course of her life and work. After the birth of her daughter, she began a spiritual practice that included time in India. She eventually embraced Buddhist Vipassana meditation. Included is her training as an art and body therapist and the transition into becoming a psychotherapist. She maintains a private practice as a somatic psychotherapist in San Rafael, California and continues to draw and paint during hiking adventures in high mountain wilderness areas.
In 2014, I faced a crisis that rocked me to my core. I experienced God's overflowing grace and how He carries us and cares for us all of the time, but especially in the times when we're in the valley. God has, by His amazing grace, used every valley to shape my life in a way that compels me to reach out and encourage others. This book is a testament to show you that tumultuous times don't have to destroy you. Challenges can be used as building blocks in helping to transform you into the person God has destined you to be. These pages have been carefully designed to strengthen and renew your resolve to lean, trust and depend on God and to embrace your valley process, for, in those moments, the most powerful lessons are learned. I pray that your heart will be postured toward God so that He can guide you and show you that there is a purpose for your life and that He can use you to speak a word at the right time to help you to be lifted from the valley to your mountaintop, just as He did for me.

Today the achievement gap is hotly debated among pundits, politicians, and educators. In particular this conversation often focuses on the two fastest-growing demographic groups in the United States: Asian Americans and Latinos. In Academic Profiling, Gilda L. Ochoa addresses this so-called gap by going directly to the source. At one California public high school where the controversy is lived every day, Ochoa turns to the students, teachers, and parents to learn about the very real disparities-in opportunity, status, treatment, and assumptions-that lead to more than just gaps in achievement. In candid and at times heart-wrenching detail, the students tell stories of encouragement and neglect on their paths to graduation. Separated by unequal middle schools and curriculum tracking, they are divided by race, class, and gender. While those channeled into an International Baccalaureate Program boast about Socratic classes and stress-release sessions, students left out of such programs commonly describe uninspired teaching and inaccessible counseling. Students unequally labeled encounter differential policing and assumptions based on their abilities-disparities compounded by the growth in the private tutoring industry that favors the already economically privileged.Despite the entrenched inequality in today’s schools, Academic Profiling finds hope in the many ways students and teachers are affirming identities, creating alternative spaces, and fostering critical consciousness. When Ochoa shares the results of her research with the high school, we see the new possibilities-and limits-of change.
