The wife of an Anglican bishop could expect a life of peace and comfort. But Benjamin Kwashi is the bishop of Jos in Nigeria, a place that is torn by Muslim-Christian violence. Gloria Kwashi has had her home burnt down and has endured rape and beatings. One of the beatings left her blinded, until surgery was able to restore her sight. Despite this, she continues to reach out to widows and orphans and supports her husband in his remarkable ministry in Northern Nigeria. This book is a record of love and endurance that should stimulate us to examine our own lives and how we respond to adversity.

Award-winning Elisabeth Åsbrink writes the biography of Gloria Ray Karlmark, one of the Little Rock Nine. Gloria Ray was 14 years old when she was stopped by armed white soldiers from entering Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas. The year was 1957 and the governor of Arkansas refused to allow her and eight other Black teenagers to enter the all-white school. ‘That day my childhood ended’, Gloria says today. Gloria Ray and the others in the Little Rock Nine were the first to act on the 1954 Supreme Court decision that ruled the segregation of Black and white children in American schools unconstitutional. Arkansas’ resistance to the decision was so strong and violent that President Dwight Eisenhower was forced to deploy elite armed troops to escort the nine Black children to school every day. The incident became world news and a pawn in the Cold War, as well as a shocking exposure of racism in America. The Little Rock Nine are now icons in the history of the American civil rights movement. But the price was high. They endured harassment, death threats and violence, and their parents and siblings suffered greatly, as did those who supported their fight for justice. In the end, the governor of Arkansas closed all public schools instead of allowing African-American children to mix with whites, and thousands of young people were affected by the decision. Gloria is the story of that year that would change her life, but also of the American racism and slavery it grew out of, inextricably linked in the story of the United States. Elisabeth Åsbrink with her eloquent narration, distinct voice, and unique ability to crack open key moments of conflict, oppression, and inequality by weaving together strands of personal and national history.

Gloria is best friends with Julian and his little brother Huey, and she has as much to say as they do. There's the parrot that ruins the Valentine for her mother; Huey's dog, who needs to be cured of his squirrel obsession; and what happens when classmate Latisha tricks Gloria, Julian, and Huey-but they don't know until it's too late Fans of Ann Cameron's best-selling chapter books about Julian and Huey will love Gloria, too. "This is where peace begins-in an ordinary neighborhood where children learn to address their problems with the help of wise adults who offer them good counsel while respecting the children enough to let them work out their own solutions . . . . Sparkles with humor." (The Horn Book)

for SATB and piano or orchestra David Warner has provided an original text for the Christmas season, for which Wilberg has created a catchy melody. The music cycles through several keys as a sense of hope, spirit, and imagination is developed and suspended throughout. This would be a wonderful opening to a concert or could be used in church services throughout the Christmas season.

The Gloria Patri has been prayed from the beginnings of Christianity. In this one-sentence prayer, time and eternity are combined in a compressed expression of doxology, praise of God. In this brief but comprehensive book, Father Ayo examines the riches in this prayer: the philological, historical, and theological origins of Christian prayer itself, and the profound spiritual implications of the Gloria Patri. At the heart of Christian prayer and at the heart of Christian liturgy we always find worship, honor, and praise of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. In Gloria Patri, Father Ayo examines the lesser doxology word by word, in both its various translations and the history of their combination and controversies. He adds to that an exploration of the boundless meanings of praise of the Triune God it encompasses. After reading Gloria Patri, no one can again take for granted this humble sentence.

Gloria F. Ross (1923-1998) described her work as the translation of paint into wool. She was deeply committed to reinventing the centuries-old art of tapestry, particularly championing the handmade in contemporary art. This remarkable book, written by textile scholar Ann Lane Hedlund, draws from rare unpublished archives to unravel the evolution of Ross’s modern tapestries and to illuminate the significance of her creative partnerships. Gloria F. Ross and Modern Tapestry features the collaborative work of 28 acclaimed modernist painters and sculptors, including Helen Frankenthaler (Ross’s sister), Kenneth Noland, and Louise Nevelson, with several dozen traditional-yet-innovative weavers in France, Scotland, and the Southwestern United States. Brief biographies of the artists, letters, notes, sketches, and photographs illustrate the practical and aesthetic challenges that occupied Gloria Ross for over three decades.Distributed for the University of Arizona Foundation
