When the second eyelid drops and the veil is drawn back, and the seeing beyond Beyond begins, and the senses begin to sway and sing...this is the magic in the poetry of Gordon R. Menzies. Drawn from keen, lifelong observations of his fellow creatures and crafted with a unique, sensual touch directed more often than not towards the worship of the Divine Feminine embodied in all women, his words embrace the experience of living beyond the breath, beyond the tentative limits of touch we allow ourselves as we move through the world.Take up his generous glass, and drink deep...

Impactful lamentations and sensual soul song dug from an earthy, visceral existence and a pensive, youthful penury...these poems include some of the earliest works of the Canadian poet Gordon R. Menzies. As when a skin drum is struck repeatedly and the sound of it echoes through the world loud enough to feel it in your very bones, so too here is what resonates from a natural man of letters when life sends wave after wave of challenges and ambuscades on his intensely personal and winding road above the earth. He's found many things beneath the stones. Embrace the brooding mind of a wild wordsmith untamed...

So many see Time as a thing linear, and Place as static and solid. It comforts them to have this understanding because both their touch and their sight ends with surfaces and cannot go beyond. The mouths of these are always moving to assure themselves, and each other, of the reality of their presence and in so doing they fail to hear the echo of those who passed before...those who are still speaking. Poetry is unbound by these human constructs. Be silent. Press your lips together. Hold your breath, and listen. Here, with his careworn pen, the poet Gordon R. Menzies will tell you what he's heard.

"It has been said that the universe is not only strange, it is stranger than we can think. But not to Gordon R Clarke! In his second collection of stories, reflections, speculations and comedy, he explores the mysterious and the enigmatic in a manner which sheds profound light onto human psychology. By turn disturbing, witty and incisive, he challenges us to examine and question what we think we know." -- R.N.F. Skinner, author of the novel Still Crazy..., the short story collection After All... and the triplet of novellas These Years: 1973, 1986 and 1991

'The Green Revolution' of the 60's and 70's produced immense gains in food cereal production in the Third World. But there are huge problems in the 'post-revolutionary' era: farmers with small or marginal holdings have benefited less than wealthier farmers; intensive mono-cropping has made production more susceptible to environmental stresses and shocks. Now there is evidence of diminishing returns from intensive and intensively chemical agricultural production. What is needed is a new approach, equally revolutionary, but different in its ideas and style. The authors set out what they mean by 'sustainable' agriculture in the new era and look at the effects of international economic restraints and of national policies on the kind of development they see as necessary. They chart a path for sustainable livelihoods for Third World farmers enmeshed by forces outside their control. They describe methods of evaluating and resolving the tough trade-offs all levels of intervention, from international trade down to the individual farm. This book cannot provide all the answers, but it does indicate what international conditions we need to be aware of, what national policies we need to advocate and what approaches at the local level we need to adopt to ensure the goal of agricultural sustainability. Unwelcome Harvest

Unwelcome Harvest

Agriculture Pollutes: pesticides can destroy wildlife and some are toxic to humans; some fungicides and herbicides cause cancer. Nitrates result in the contamination of drinking water and produce the risk of the ?blue-baby? syndrome in infants and of stomach cancer in adults. Agriculture produces methane, ammonia, nitrous oxide and the products of burning off, all of which add to the world's problems of acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer and global warming. This book, which focuses on the UK, the USA and Third World countries, is the first comprehensive review of agriculture and pollution: it examines the facts and assesses the relative dangers of each pollution problem. It also considers the effects of pollution on agriculture itself ? crop yields are depressed and livestock damaged by various forms of pollution from all sources. The authors offer solutions to these apparently overwhelming problems, and describe existing technology which would allow us to deal with them. Originally published in 1991
