Howard Keel

Howard Keel

Bruce Leiby

Greenwood Press
1995
sidottu
Howard Keel rose from a childhood of poverty to become one of Hollywood's greatest musical stars. With the decline of musicals in the late 1950s, he attained success as an actor in dramatic roles. His role in the television series Dallas (1981-1991) brought him additional television and film appearances, sold-out European concerts, and a first-time recording career. This book details his fascinating life and career. A concise but informative biography recounts Keel's rise to stardom and the many paths his career has taken. The chapters that follow are each devoted to his work in a particular medium, such as film, television, and radio. Within each chapter, entries for individual performances provide cast and credit listings, plot synopses, excerpts from reviews, and insightful commentary. An annotated bibliography points to sources of additional information.
Howard Hanson

Howard Hanson

James E. Perone

Greenwood Press

sidottu
Howard Hanson details the career and works of a composer called by several critics the most important figure in American music in the second quarter of the 20th century. Hanson's compositions elicited the broadest possible range of critical reaction. While early works from the 1920s were viewed as dissonant, avant-garde experimentations, within a decade his compositions in a similar style were viewed as solid, conservative works. Within this range, it was generally agreed that Hanson represented the best in solid compositional and orchestrational technique, and audiences greeted his new compositions with unquestioned approval throughout his 60-plus year career. As an important proponent of American music during his forty year tenure as Director of the Eastman School of Music, he conducted premieres of literally thousands of works by American composers and always encouraged young American composers.
Howard Hanson in Theory and Practice

Howard Hanson in Theory and Practice

Allen Cohen

Praeger Publishers Inc
2003
sidottu
In this exciting new study of a largely overlooked but nevertheless extremely important figure in American music, author Allen Cohen explores the relationship between theory and practice in the works of Howard Hanson, a prominent twentieth-century composer, conductor, and educator. In Hanson's book Harmonic Materials of Modern Music, he proffered a theory of classification of all possible pitch-class collections in the chromatic scale, showing ways of deriving larger collections from smaller ones, and demonstrating significant relationships among them. This theory anticipated in many ways the standard formulations of music set theory, while also influencing Hanson's own compositions. Following an introduction and biographical overview, Howard Hanson: Theory and Practice summarizes its subject's theoretical writings, examines their usefulness for both musicologists and composers, and analyzes in particular two of Hanson's musical pieces. In this way, Howard Hanson represents an exciting and highly educational look at a man and his work, both unacknowledged for too long.
Howard Stern

Howard Stern

Rich Mintzer

Greenwood Press

This revealing look at the life and career of Howard Stern examines his role as a champion of free speech and his amazing success at bringing his own unique brand of "reality" radio to the airwaves. First Amendment rights, particularly freedom of speech, play an integral part in all modern means of communication. Howard Stern has tested the limits and pushed the boundaries of freedom of speech to the delight of some and the disgust of others. Howard Stern: A Biography explores this long-debated topic and sheds light on how one media star has made a significant difference. Offering an engaging and insightful look at the life and career of radio's leading Shock Jock, the book explores Stern's youth, his first forays into radio, and his desire to move up in a competitive medium. Of course, it also covers his battles with the Federal Communications Commission, how he was finally able to sidestep the censors, and the significant changes the battle brought about in what is deemed acceptable on radio.
Howard Hawks

Howard Hawks

Gregory Camp

Routledge

Known for creating classic films including His Girl Friday, The Big Sleep, Bringing Up Baby, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Howard Hawks is one of the best-known Hollywood ‘auteurs’, but the important role that music plays in his films has been generally neglected by film critics and scholars. In this concise study, Gregory Camp demonstrates how Hawks' use of music and musical treatment of dialogue articulate the group communication that is central to his films. In five chapters, Camp explores how the notion of 'music' in Hawks' films can be expanded beyond the film score, and the techniques by which Hawks and his collaborators (including actors, screenwriters, composers, and editors) achieve this heightened musicality.

First to Bomb - The World War I Diary of Lt. Howard G. Rath, Bombardier, 96th Aero Squadron
This never-before published diary of Lt. Howard G. Rath shows the War through his eyes. Rath was the lead bombardier of the 96th Aero Squadron, which was the first American bomb squadron in World War I. He was the first American to drop bombs in combat. Later, he became the squadron Operations Officer but still flew missions as bombardier. The last two months of the war he was also the Operations Officer of the 1st Day Bombardment Group and flew bombing missions in the St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne offensives. His day-to-day accounts describe the ups and downs of the squadron and the human costs involved during times when the U.S. was learning how to bomb under war time conditions. Rath received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in combat. Lt. Howard G. Rath did not write the diary for publication but rather as a memoir of his experiences and thoughts for his own use. Historian Hugh T. Harrington has added historical structure for the reader providing clarification and further information to fill out the history provided by the diary, as well as identifying people and places mentioned in the diary. There is an Index and comprehensive Bibliography. This book provides an active, and intelligent, participant's view of life and combat in America's first bombing squadron. World War I historian Gerald C. Thomas, Jr. has been called Lt. Howard G. Rath's diary a "most valuable source of unpublished material."

Director-dramatist Howard Barker is a restlessly prolific, compulsively controversial and provocative multi-media artist. Beyond his internationally performed and acclaimed theatrical productions, and his award-winning theatre company The Wrestling School, he is also a poet, a painter whose work has been exhibited internationally, and a philosophical essayist cognisant of the unique power of art to provoke moral speculation, and of the distinctive theatricality of the human being in times of crisis. This collection of essays provides international perspectives on the full range of Barker’s achievements, theatrical and otherwise, and argues for their unique importance and urgency at the forefront of several genres of provocative modern art. It includes an interview with the artist and an essay by Barker himself.

Howard Hughes was America's most famous playboy and rogue operator, an outlaw eccentric millionaire and hellraiser, 'I can buy any man' he once bragged, 'and have any woman.' And it was almost true.He stormed from bedroom to boardroom, from corporate bribary to Capitol Hill; his affairs with Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Bette Davis and many others were as brief as they were stormy. he was a deeply involved in Watergate and in the Cuban missile crisis. He burgled his own office records when tax authorities were after him. And, despite a mystrious illness, he wheeled and dealed to the last days of his life.
