"Varina Davis is a lady in any event," Southern women of thearistocratic circles of Washington told the war correspondent of theLondon Times who had been sent to the National Capital to reportall the news he could gather concerning the secession of the SouthernStates from the great American Union. There was a finality in their tonesand manner as if the fact settled the whole question and right ofsecession. And being such perfect ladies themselves, who could be a betterjudge of what it took to be one. . . . They further informed him thatVarina was popular and had friends and social influence in Washington, adding with pursed lips that she belonged to the set they called nicepeople; not like such people as he had seen in the White House. Thus Mrs. Jefferson Davis was described to one who, with piqued curiosity, was soon to meet her as the First Lady of the Southern Confederacy. . . .But Varina Howell Davis came proudly to her high station. She was notwithout a due understanding of its significance, nor was she without thefeeling that she, in some degree, deserved the distinction."--from Chapter IIn this volume, Mrs. Rowland has written a charming and accuratehistorical narrative of the Southern Confederacy in which the wife ofJefferson Davis plays a part that holds and fascinates the reader. Thenarrative, written in an easy, yet frank and forceful style, denotes thework as an important contribution to American biography.

Twelve-year-old Xavier Howell has a knack for making things go awry on a colossal scale. Like the time his beetle trap experiment turned into a minefield of dung bombs. Or when his chemistry assignment covered the whole classroom-students included-in orange goo. Otherwise, he's just an ordinary kid on a normal outer-world colony . . . as far as he knows.

The first monograph on an American abstract artist of unparalleled subtlety. James Howell (1935-2014) was an American abstract artist who used infinite variations of the colour grey to explore the fundamentals of light, space, time, and [kinesthetic] perception. He appreciated the colour’s mystery, softness, simplicity, and capaciousness. His precise, systematic methods, developed over many years, yielded accomplished square paintings and works on paper. Their subtle revelations — absent of illusion, narrative, and symbolic references — expand in the viewer’s consciousness. In this comprehensive first monograph, Alistair Rider traces Howell’s artistic evolution, from the beginnings of his career in the early 1970s through the artist’s greatest achievement — the group of abstractions called Series 10, which occupied the last two decades of his life. Rider’s multi-faceted essay also chronicles Howell’s biography, including his early studies and accomplishments in architecture, and offers several interpretive frameworks for Howell’s oeuvre, notably a connection to East Asian philosophies. The beautifully produced book presents dozens of full-colour plates of artworks and exhibitions, and Rider’s essay is thoroughly illustrated with archival images and documents from the James Howell Foundation. This publication makes a critical contribution to the reevaluation of an artist whose studies of light into shadow have for many years been in a dynamic conversation with recognised trends in contemporary art.

James Howell (Bilingual edition)
Shades of grayAmerican painter James Howell found the subject of his art in the color gray. He explored the color’s sensual variety diligently over decades. In 2022, the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop dedicated an exhibition to Howell presenting his work in the context of Albers’ paintings. This catalogue documents this remarkable artistic encounter and explores Howell’s work in all its conceptual depth, transcending the seemlingly monothematic of the color gray. His paintings are meditations on the relationship between color and light, based on a refinement of painterly means that, despite their extreme reduction, allow for a paradoxical emphasis on expression.

Family Maps of Howell County, Missouri

Family Maps of Howell County, Missouri

402 pages with 89 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Howell County, Missouri, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 7627 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 49 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for?
