At the heart of the topology of global optimization lies Morse Theory: The study of the behaviour of lower level sets of functions as the level varies. Roughly speaking, the topology of lower level sets only may change when passing a level which corresponds to a stationary point (or Karush-Kuhn Tucker point). We study elements of Morse Theory, both in the unconstrained and constrained case. Special attention is paid to the degree of differentiabil ity of the functions under consideration. The reader will become motivated to discuss the possible shapes and forms of functions that may possibly arise within a given problem framework. In a separate chapter we show how certain ideas may be carried over to nonsmooth items, such as problems of Chebyshev approximation type. We made this choice in order to show that a good under standing of regular smooth problems may lead to a straightforward treatment of "just" continuous problems by means of suitable perturbation techniques, taking a priori nonsmoothness into account. Moreover, we make a focal point analysis in order to emphasize the difference between inner product norms and, for example, the maximum norm. Then, specific tools from algebraic topol ogy, in particular homology theory, are treated in some detail. However, this development is carried out only as far as it is needed to understand the relation between critical points of a function on a manifold with structured boundary. Then, we pay attention to three important subjects in nonlinear optimization.

Good, solid, contemporary introductions to patristic authors and writings are difficult to find in the English-speaking world, and European volumes are expensive. This volume, which is Siegfried Schatzmann's translation of Lehrbuch der Patrologie, offers English-speaking readers easy access to Hubertus R. Drobner's traditional introduction to early Christian thought. Hubertus R. Drobner brings patristics scholarship up to date in this traditional introduction. His work is sufficiently broad to be a useful summary of early Christian history and the expansive strokes of doctrinal debate and development and provides a clear presentation of early Christian thought. Drobner introduces new materials throughout this updated edition of his handbook. A general map and several timetables add to the clarity of the volume. The Fathers of the Church is valuable in its presentation of contemporary studies and views. Patristics students will benefit from this dependable overview of early Christian texts, and scholars and libraries will appreciate the extensive bibliography, indexes, and other resources.

The Green and Red Planet: A Physiological Study of the Possibility of Life on Mars is a scientific exploration of the potential for life on the planet Mars. Written by Hubertus Strughold, a renowned physiologist and space medicine expert, the book examines the physical and environmental conditions of Mars and their impact on the possibility of life.Strughold delves into the history of Mars exploration, from the early observations by astronomers to the more recent missions by NASA and other space agencies. He analyzes the geological and atmospheric features of the planet, including its thin atmosphere, extreme temperatures, and lack of liquid water, and considers how these factors might affect the evolution and survival of any potential life forms. The book also explores the physiological adaptations that would be required for life on Mars, including the ability to withstand radiation exposure, low gravity, and extreme temperatures. Strughold draws on his expertise in space medicine to examine the potential challenges that human explorers would face on a mission to Mars.Overall, The Green and Red Planet provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the possibility of life on Mars, offering a valuable resource for scientists, space enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the search for extraterrestrial life. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Optimization Theory is becoming a more and more important mathematical as well as interdisciplinary area, especially in the interplay between mathematics and many other sciences like computer science, physics, engineering, operations research, etc. This volume gives a comprehensive introduction into the theory of (deterministic) optimization on an advanced undergraduate and graduate level. One main feature is the treatment of both continuous and discrete optimization at the same place. This allows to study the problems under different points of view, supporting a better understanding of the entire field. Audience: The book can be adapted well as an introductory textbook into optimization theory on a basis of a two semester course; however, each of its parts can also be taught separately. Many exercises are included to increase the reader's understanding.
