Models for Smooth Infinitesimal Analysis

Models for Smooth Infinitesimal Analysis

Ieke Moerdijk; Gonzalo E. Reyes

The aim of this book is to construct categories of spaces which contain all the C?-manifolds, but in addition infinitesimal spaces and arbitrary function spaces. To this end, the techniques of Grothendieck toposes (and the logic inherent to them) are explained at a leisurely pace and applied. By discussing topics such as integration, cohomology and vector bundles in the new context, the adequacy of these new spaces for analysis and geometry will be illustrated and the connection to the classical approach to C?-manifolds will be explained.

This exquisite collection of short fiction by Sata Ineko (1904–1998) offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of women rarely dignified in fiction: glamorous café waitresses, feisty communist activists, a tortured novelist, a soldier’s wife, and single women in Japan’s Korean colony. Her delicately penned portraits challenge the tired, erotic tropes of the geisha and schoolgirl, while delving into the dilemmas women themselves faced in their personal and professional relationships. The stories and novella translated here span a period of two decades and the most important events and themes in twentieth-century history. “Café Kyoto” (1929) takes up the glamorous, if tragic, lives of café waitresses in the wake of the late 1920s Depression. “Tears of a Factory Girl in the Union Leadership” (1931) offers a unique portrait of a woman who works with the underground Communist Party. “The Scent of Incense” (1942), written as a work of “home front” literature, was meant to help mobilize women as productive workers and supportive housewives during World War II. “White and Purple” (1950), one of Sata’s rare postcolonial works penned just after the outbreak of the Korean War, reflects on the psychological damage inflicted on women during Japan’s occupation of Korea. Sata’s first novella, Crimson (1936–1938), joins a long tradition of women’s writing in Japan that sought to assert women’s “liberation” from what was seen as the oppressively patriarchal institution of marriage.Translator Samuel Perry’s critical introduction weaves the story of Sata’s life into an examination of the historical and cultural milieu that helped to generate her stories about working women, their lives in the workplace and in the home. As the celebrated author herself once wrote, “The kinds of womanhood available today exist precisely because literary masters of different ages and cultures have drawn us to them: the woman we pity, the woman with a heart of gold, the cruel woman, the clever woman, the hen-pecker, the cheapskate, and the ‘good wife wise mother.’ As terms we use to describe the kinds of women who exist in the world today, they have simply outgrown their usefulness.

Part nostalgic hippie memoir and part travel guide, Inese Civkulis's fictionalized odyssey begins in Summer of Love Berkeley with a young woman -- Nebraska-born, raised Catholic, and in love for the first time -- discovering the delights and perils of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But always at the heart of the adventure is a rocky love story, the relationship flowing and ebbing across eighteen countries in six years, as the pun-loving global explorer sets out in 1970 with her boyfriend Ben along the Hippie Trail through Asia. Inese is as effervescent and intrepid a backpacking companion as Kerouac himself might have wished for In fact, it could be said that ON THE ROAD meets EAT PRAY LOVE in this ebullient memoir-- with bits of TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY thrown in--the witty parts. As Inese and her not-always-true love embrace adventures ranging from the thrill of living rent-free in a centipede-infested hut on Tonga to life-and-death on a Balinese beach, the once easily intimidated young woman unearths downright heroic strength. She may struggle to keep up on a Mount Everest trek, but she is the one who continues CPR on a seemingly lifeless drowning victim when everyone else has given up. Whether you're re-living your own Sixties adventures, whether you've already trekked the globe, or you're a Generation Z longing for your first visa stamps, Come Dream With Me is the armchair voyager's dream-come-true.

Selling is a story. So, this is the story, about what it means to start something new, and to be afraid of the outcome; and about the assumptions we live with, and how much we could accomplish, if even for a minute, we could forget what "cannot" be done. This is a story about daring to follow the dream. Not only the Maggie's dream, the heroine of this book, but also what is experienced by recording the story from the first word to the last.Life of a Salesperson. The Beginning. was written as quickly and easily as a giddy cocktail, and share real selling experiences, experiments, emotional experiences, stories, people, places, situations and other sales components imbued with a "magical creative sauce" in the single story that runs through the pages of this book.
