Body Image and Identity in Jeanette Winterson's 'Written on the Body'
Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0 (B), University of Cologne (English Seminar), course: Hauptseminar Writing with a Difference, language: English, abstract: Jeanette Wintersons's "Written on the Body" (1990) draws a realistic picture of twentieth century England, but in contrast to the majority of post-modern works that display chaos and displacement often accompanied by apocalyptic future visions, "Written on the Body sets love and trust against individualism and control. The simple plot of the story as well as the overload of metaphors and imagery have misled some critics into judging the novel as trivial and romantic, but a closer look clearly does not hold that interpretation. The use of imagery and fantastic elements is much too pointed to be read as mere poetic illustration of romantic feelings. In fact what seems trivial and naive at the surface appears highly thought through at a deeper look. "Written on the Body" is a notable comment on society's perception of gender and identity. The ostentatious playing with cultural conventions and assum ptions related to sexual relationships and the female body, constitutes a sociocritical statement, which is artistically wrapped up in a melodramatic love affair. It challenges the conventional binary gender system, although, at the same time, it seems itself trapped in this system. In this paper I want to explore the representation of body, gender, and identity in "Written on the Body."
Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella
for SATB and piano four hands or full orchestra A wonderful processional, Wilberg's Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella is a joyful carol. A catchy, brightly articulated countermelody distinguishes this from other settings. The women sing alone, then the men, and all join together for a triumphant finish. Orchestral material is available on hire.

Multiple Discourses, Multiple Meanings: Jeanette Winterson's Language of Multiplicity and Variety
Jeanette Winterson is a contemporary British writer whose oeuvre is often defined as postmodern, although the writer herself often underlines her modernist roots. Her novels are inspired by the works of T.S.Eliot and Virginia Woolf. The following book is aimed at researching the poetic devices used by Winterson in her prose. Five novels were analysed: The Passion, Sexing the Cherry, Written on the Body, Gut Symmetries and The.Powerbook. Some of the most important aspects of the book are the intertextual references to other literary works, especially to the poetry and essays by T.S. Eliot who is the biggest inspiration in Winterson's works. The book is an attempt to define the Wintersonian style, and it presents a variety of methods used by Winterson to achieve the poetic quality in her prose. The research demonstrates both the prosaic and poetic elements of Winterson's works which illustrate the connection between transparency and opacity of language. What is interesting is the notion of the literal which may appear mundane and unpoetic. However, this analysis of Winterson's novels shows that the literal is an essential element of poetry.
A Tale of Two Worlds: The Palm Springs Chronicles and the Biography of Jeanette J. Guerty
The incredible experiences encountered in Palm Springs Florida although very different in context will leave their mark in history. The story is two fold. The first deals with the work and achievements of Jeanette J. Guerty whose goal of building the library in the Village of Palm Springs, will serve people in the community for many years to come. The library is named in her honor. During the entire span of six years, personal and political events took place that under normal circumstances would never have occurred. Personal attacks, harassment and property damage was overshadowed by the unthinkable bizarre discovery of an invisible life form that co-exists with us on this planet. The story will change your entire way of thinking when associated with our lives on earth and what follows after death. Multiple pictures of alien beings were discovered on a surveillance camera over a six-year period during the 1970s. The description and activities of these entities when compared to those described in the Bible as angels are strikingly similar. The purpose of life is explained in the Bible with the life and death of Jesus Christ but as far as knowing what happens after that, we are asked to have faith in God. This information puts a realistic face on the mysterious spiritual world of the supernatural and how it interfaces with the human race on Earth and thereafter. A Tale of Two Worlds not only exposes the existence of another life form on Earth but takes us into the previously uncharted territory of life beyond death and how these entities may have played a prominent role in the development of human life and religious cultures. Evidence has been provided to validate this theory based on authentic films, religious documentation and scientific research. The proof is documented on the multiple roles of film taken in Palm Springs during the 1970s and multiple photographs taken in the United Kingdom in 2017.

From one of Britain's best-loved literary novelists comes this magical, lyrical tale of the young orphan Silver, taken in by the ancient lighthouse keeper Mr. Pew, who reveals to her a world of myth and mystery through the art of storytelling. Motherless and anchorless, Silver is taken in by the timeless Mr. Pew, keeper of the Cape Wrath lighthouse. Pew tells Silver ancient tales of longing and rootlessness, of the slippages that occur throughout every life. One life, Babel Dark's, a nineteenth-century clergyman, opens like a map that Silver must follow, and the intertwining of myth and reality, of storytelling and experience, lead her through her own particular darkness. A story of mutability, talking birds and stolen books, of Darwin and Stevenson and of the Jekyll and Hyde in all of us, Lighthousekeeping is a way into the most secret recesses of our own hearts and minds. Jeanette Winterson is one of the most extraordinary and original writers of her generation, and this shows her at her lyrical best. "The importance of stories, the urge to create ourselves through stories, is one of Winterson’s abiding themes, along with the supremacy, the redemptive power of love." Daily Telegraph "A marvelously skilful juggling act of ideas and emotion ... Winterson’s prodigious talent brings the book alive." Evening Standard "The power of Lighthousekeeping is in ... the pared-down precision of its language, each word smoothed into a finely polished pebble." Observer
