Jess: To and From the Printed Page focuses on the artist simply known as "Jess" (1923-2004), and celebrates his lively and lifelong dialogue with poets, poetry and printed matter. Published to accompany the iCI touring exhibition, it features collages made for publication, the books and magazines in which they were reproduced, as well as many previously unreproduced paintings, drawings and assemblages. The book offers a fresh perspective on Jess's work by specifically addressing the interrelation between his art and the California literary culture of which he was a part. It also explores the intimacy of the collaborations and conversations in which he participated over five decades, and points to his effect on younger artists today--through his use of "pop" materials in collage and paint, his early homoerotic themes and his enjoyment of the book format as a compositional vehicle.
Jess, Surviving Normal

Jess, Surviving Normal

Jess, Surviving Normal is a young adult novel about a smart and athletic high school student who finds life at his new, large city school both challenging and dangerous. Moving from a tranquil small-town high school to a large inner-city one immediately puts a crimp in Jess Jemison's style as well as his side. With his start delayed, it costs the sophomore a chance at the basketball team, and the notoriety that precedes him makes the acclimation process even more difficult. It's not until he is befriended by two classmates that matters take a turn for the better-or do they? Gangs, family, sports and racial issues keep Jess and his new friends in a scramble as they deal with the day-to-day events of adolescence. Jess, Dan-el and Jen, each in their own way, are smart and capable young people. Jess is reticent, shy and predictably na ve in his new setting, Dan-el is the portrait of a charismatic leader, and Jen is a steadying influence who knows what she wants and how to get it. Each is involved in sports: Jess in baseball, Dan-el in boxing, and Jen in basketball. If there is a common denominator in all that is diverse, it's due to the strength of family.

Jess Willard, the "Pottawatomie Giant," won the heavyweight title in 1915 with his defeat of Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion. At 6 feet, 6 inches and 240 pounds, Willard was considered unbeatable in his day. He nonetheless lost to Jack Dempsey in 1919 in one of the most brutally one-sided contests in fistic history. Willard later made an initially successful comeback but was defeated by Luis Firpo in 1923 and retired from the ring. He died in 1968, largely forgotten by the boxing public. Featuring photographs from the Willard family archives, this first full-length biography provides a detailed portrait of one of America's boxing greats.
