"You have heard of the patience of Job," said one New Testament writer (Jas 5:11). But have you heard of his impatience? Readers will soon learn that Job's patience lasted barely a week. Shortly after suffering unspeakable tragedies, Job spoke surprisingly impassive words of acceptance and trust in God in the face of loss. After seven days of suffering in silence, however, Job filled the air with complaints and accusations toward the God who had repaid his righteousness with ravaging. All people who live long enough will experience suffering and unexpected sorrows that lead them to join Job in questioning whether God is playing fair. Questions come easily; answers are hard. Studying the story of Job requires us to enter a dark world that is sometimes painfully like our own. Sometimes, like Job, the lesson we learn may be that there are no clear answers or that we have been asking the wrong questions. The book of Job recounts a dark and dangerous journey toward unseen insights that challenge both human assumptions and traditional theological beliefs. Those who dare to enter Job's world may discover that their own world-or view of the world-has changed in surprising ways. In the end, however, those who stick with the ancient sufferer may discover spiritual depths they had not previously imagined. This Study Guide for the Smyth & Helwys Annual Bible Study on Job serves three purposes: to educate the learner on major issues of appropriate interpretation, to offer an overview of theological themes, and to build the learner's Bible study skills by reviewing significant interpretations.Jan Cartledge is pastor of HomeStar Fellowship, an innovative faith community with a special interest in ministry to those who occupy their own ash heaps of suffering in downtown Raleigh. She is frequently called upon to lead seminars on the subjects of grief and loss. Tony W. Cartledge is associate professor of Old Testament at Campbell University Divinity School and contributing editor for Baptists Today. He previously served as editor of the Biblical Recorder and as pastor of churches in Georgia and North Carolina. Jan and Tony are authors of A Whole New World: Life After Bethany and grateful parents of Samuel.

Shortly after Dr. Terrien had completed his illuminating book on 'The Psalms and Their Meaning for Today', he decided to write a book about Job.This book, like its predecessor, is intended for the general reader: to give him a fuller knowledge, clearer understanding, and deeper appreciation of the religious and literary values of a truly great dramatic poem.Job, more than any other book of the Bible, belongs to the literature of the world. Yet who reads this poem in our day? Classics bear the burden of greatness. They are celebrated and unknown.Of such is Job, today unknown even to those who claim no immunity to cultural urges. Incidentally, the fact that this classic happens to belong to the Bible does not explain its quality of 'terra incognita', for it is neglected also by synagogue and church goers who daily read other portions of Scripture. The ancient Hebrew poem is modern, for it proffers a plea for pure religion. The poet of Job did not attempt to solve the problem of evil, nor did he propose a vindication of the justice of God. For him, any attempt of man "to justify God" would have been an act of arrogance. But he knew and promoted in the immediacy of faith a mode of life and in the very pangs of insecurity a sense of triumph. He transmuted the taste of sorrow into the knowledge of joy - not in the shallowness of gaiety, to be sure, but the depth of a joy brought by the presence of one who moves and warms the worlds.

Most people think of the book of Job as an attempt to explain suffering, but they fail to see the more important issue of God's righteousness and graciousness in bringing good out of evil. The understanding offered in this book helps the reader focus accordingly on God's purpose in grace to bring Job to know Jehovah himself and his heavenly will that he might thereby be transformed and truly become a servant of God. In this respect, the book presents a paradigm of God's crucial work with all believers to make himself known to them through revelation and repentance, that they might genuinely know him as their Redeemer and be one with his exalted will. As is expressed throughout the Bible, God warmly desires that all his people serve him. The repentance that comes at the climax of the book is not the believer's repentance upon initial faith but the more crucial repentance of the mature believer for the kingdom of God. God's purpose with our lives depends, therefore, on our understanding his will and knowing our God and his righteousness. Job is an "ordinary servant of God," therefore, as a pattern to all believers.

Job lost his family, his property and his health, but he did not complain or blame God. Trusting in God made a huge difference in Job's life. When we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Friend and Redeemer, that makes a big difference for us too. God will give us patience and he gives us all we need for every day, especially the forgiveness of sin through Jesus Christ, who gave his life so that those who trust in him would have eternal life.

These helpful guides in the Cover to Cover series are ideal for group and individual study. Experience the reality of Bible events like never before and live through the inspiring lives of key characters in Scripture. Learn how to apply God's Word to your life as you explore seven compelling sessions and gain a new depth in your Bible knowledge. Finding God's wisdom in the midst of suffering Death, destruction, disease… the book of Job isn't the easiest read. A man who leads an upright life, suddenly plunged into the depths of despair, does not sit well with us. But there is more to the story than that, and precious wisdom can be found. By reflecting on the advice offered by Job's 'comforters', we are invited to address our own understanding of seemingly random suffering. Job's story ultimately points to the wisdom of God, which we can find in Jesus Christ, our hope. These seven insightful sessions help us to realise that: Our life circumstances are not an indication of God's judgment of us. Intellectual arguments are often unhelpful to those facing struggles; but friendship, compassion and an encounter with God are invaluable. The wisdom of God, personified in Jesus, is our source of strength and direction through any trials we face. Icebreakers, Bible readings, eye openers, discussion starters, personal application make this a rich resource for group or individual study.

This is an entirely new Tyndale Old Testament Commentary on the Book of Job, from W. Dennis Tucker, Professor of Christian Scriptures at Baylor University's Truett Seminary. Replacing Francis I. Andersen's much loved legacy volume, Tucker delves deep into the theological and exegetical work that has been done in the last few decades. The book of Job is all about human suffering. Its portrayal of one man's anguish, the ineffective responses of his friends, and his struggle for faith and understanding mirrors our own experiences in the world. Here is a careful, exegetical, theological and pastoral exploration of Job. The Tyndale Old Testament Commentary is designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text of the book of Numbers says and what it means. The Introduction to this commentary gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting and purpose. Following a structural Analysis, the Commentary takes the book of Numbers section by section, drawing out its main themes and also commenting on individual verses and problems of interpretation. Additional Notes provide fuller discussion of particular difficulties. In the new Old Testament volumes, the commentary on each section of the text is structured under three headings: Context, Comment and Theology. The goal is to explain the true meaning of the Bible and make its message plain.

For Francis Andersen, the Old Testament book about Job is one of the supreme offerings of the human mind to the living God, and one of the best gifts of God to humanity. 'The task of understanding it is as rewarding as it is strenuous ... One is constantly amazed at its audacious theology and at the magnitude of its intellectual achievement. Job is a prodigious book in the vast range of its ideas, in its broad coverage of human experience, in the intensity of its passion, in the immensity of its concept of God, and not least in its superb literary craftsmanship ... From one man's agony it reaches out to the mystery of God, beyond words and explanations.'
