Milton - By Mark Pattison. If Milton's genius did not announce itself in his paraphrases of Psalms, it did in his impetuosity in learning, "which I seized with such eagerness that from the twelfth year of my age, I scarce ever went to bed before midnight." Such is his own account. And it is worthnotice that we have here an incidental test of the trustworthiness of Aubrey's reminiscences. Aubrey's words are, "When he was very young he studied very hard, and sate up very late, commonly till twelve or one o'clock at night; and his father ordered the maid to sit up for him." Charles Dudley Warner (1829 - 1900) was an American essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Warner traveled widely, lectured frequently, and was actively interested in prison reform, city park supervision, and other movements for the public good. He was the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and, at the time of his death, was president of the American Social Science Association. He first attracted attention with the reflective sketches in My Summer in a Garden (1870). First published as a series in The Hartford Courant, these sketches were popular for their abounding and refined humor and mellow personal charm and their delicately finished style.

John R. Gohmann grew up in an innocent, trouble-free time in the relatively small Midwestern town of New Albany, Indiana. While he had most of the same experiences his friends did, John seemed to have a knack for taking things to the next level. It wasn't so much by design, it just seemed to happen that way. In this collection of 73 stories, John tells of events that happened to him when he opted to "step off of the path" chosen by many of his friends and contemporaries. While there are many more life stories and events John could share, these are just a sample of some of his more memorable experiences. They are preserved in this book for his current and future family members and friends. Sit back and let your mind wander through your own experiences. These stories will touch upon memories of your youth, teenage years, married life, and your golden years. You will pause, think, smile, and nod your head in amazement. Remember, you reap what you sow. Life is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy each day because we're only passing through. For God and Country

Touchstones examines the ways in which John McGahern became a writer through his reading. This reading, it is shown, was both extensive and intensive, and tended towards immersion in the classics. As such, new insights are provided into McGahern’s admiration and use of writers as diverse as Dante Alighieri, William Blake, James Joyce, Albert Camus and several others. Evidence for these claims is found both through close reading of McGahern’s published texts as well as unprecedented sleuthing in his extensive archive of papers held at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The ultimate intention of the book is to draw attention to the very literary and writerly nature of McGahern as an artist, and to place him, not just as a great Irish writer, but as part of a long and venerable European tradition.

The Trial and Execution for Petit Treason of Mark and Phillis, Slaves of Capt. John Codman (Esprios Classics)
"It is not surprising that the execution of a woman, by burning, so lately as when Shirley was governor, -a period when the province had greatly advanced in culture and refinement, -should seem to any one incredible. Indeed, even so critical and thorough a student of our provincial history as our late distinguished associate, Dr. Palfrey, once wrote to me inquiring if the rumor of such a proceeding had any foundation in fact, and if so, whether the execution took place according to law, or by the impulse of an infuriated mob. It gave me great satisfaction to be able to settle his doubts on this subject by referring him to the records of the Superior Court of Judicature, where the judgment, from which I shall presently read to you, and a copy of which I sent to him, appears at length."
