The low hum of anxious mumbling is shattered by a cry – she’s coming! In the distance, the vibrant red top of Jasmin Paris emerges from the browns and greys of the forest with singular determination and only the yellow gate in her sights. Great cheers go up and celebration bursts into life. The first woman to ever complete the Barkley Marathons. A new chapter has just been written in the history of long-distance running. The 2024 Barkley Marathons is one that will never be forgotten. In Do Not Block Gate, award-winning sports photographer David Miller takes you on a visual journey through the thorny undergrowth of Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee to witness the pain, the suffering, the tears and the triumphs of one of the most iconic editions of the world’s most infamous race. Shot exclusively in monochrome using a Leica Q2 Monochrom, this curated collection of 200 images conveys the atmosphere and the spirit of the Barkley Marathons. David’s image of Jasmin Paris slumped under the famous gate – blocking the gate – will go down in history as one of the most iconic sport photographs of all time.

Due South catalogues moments in time experienced during a journey to Antarctica, the last great wilderness. As selected artist with the British Antarctic Survey, my work is an attempt to present the reality of Antarctica, not simply a visual record, but an account of the emotions and fleeting thoughts of life in the 'freezer'. Increasingly I became aware of the great migration of life at the margin. The vast movement of wildlife within the air and the sea, dictated by the seasons and by the great exodus of life to the north with the first storms of winter. The confrontation with the sublime on such a scale was only possible due to that 'silent sea' of the inner self, into which one could retreat for shelter and reflection. And so it was that I turned to the sketch book and journal. Illustrated with photographs and line drawings, Due South is an evocative and personal account of an individual's encounter with Antarctica. Published to coincide with exhibitions at the Natural History Museum (24 February-1 August 2004) and the Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum (23 January-6 March 2005), it mixes text and image to recreate the extreme experience of the Antarctic landscape.

'26.6.2008. 9.00 hours. Cloud level has risen sufficiently to see the heights of the island of Hoy. The margin of existence that I had noticed in North Ronaldsay, with its apparent make do approach to the problem of sea encroachment, is displayed along much of the island's coastline. As I walk along the shores of the Hoy sound I come to a patchwork of sandbags that have been placed within the fragmenting sandstone of the upper shore. Close by these sea defences an old stone wall encloses a cemetery. Many of the headstones are inscribed with readings of latitude and longitude, indicating that the buried were probably mariners. High and dry upon the shores of the sound, the seamen rest: the sea had taken them and in the fullness of time it will claim them back.' As climate change and the prospect of relentlessly rising sea levels threaten communities around the world, artist and writer John Kelly records this process in words and images. From the high altiplano of Bolivia, through Newfoundland, the Arctic regions of Alaska and Svalbard, to the Baltic and Orkney, he evokes the dramatic natural transformations affecting our planet and their impact on people and landscapes.

Constantly inventive and unerringly precise, the poems in John Kelly's debut collection reveal an author at home with both the stand-alone lyric and the longer, apparently improvisational pieces that contribute so much to this book's extraordinary brio and style. The breadth of cultural reference is perhaps a given, but Kelly's real achievement is to make sense of a sometimes teeming eld of vision. From the natural world to the troubled north of his youth, through encounters with art - and its creators - to poems that chart the seismic changes that come with love, fatherhood and loss, Notions is a book full of humour and play, wonder and woundedness. When you bow your head to the soloing thrush, lit like an old friend's soul in the bones of a silver birch.- from 'Winter's Blessing'

The 'space' of John Kelly's second collection of poems is, to begin with, the marvellous unknown that fascinates his younger self. But it's also very much an earthly realm - the place where daily life occurs, the small territories each of us claims and clears, and from which we attempt to make sense of the world. As with space, time too proves elastic, and full of openings onto unexpected discoveries. 'It's not that I don't know where I am, exactly, ' one poem begins, only to travel back some fifty years, prompted by no more than the barking of a dog. While the past insists on casting its shadow, and certain spaces reveal themselves as traps, the poet's memory is nevetheless drawn to the light, to the stars, to the comforting presence of the dead, and to the many birds that move throughout these pages. Intense, humorous, and with the poet's eye for the telling detail, these poems take us from the wonders of the everyday to the deep and mysterious spaces beyond - and beyond again.

The pig lives all alone in a house on top of a hill. He's very happy with his quiet life. He has his books, his tidy tidy house and a lovely view. Until one morning he opens the curtains to find a duck has taken up residence on the tiny pinnacle of rock outside his window. Much to the pigs annoyance the excessively friendly duck likes the spot and decides to build a house there. With a swimming pool. And a garden and patio. The duck tries to be friendly. He's very confident and outgoing. It seems he's been everywhere (unlike the pig), done everything; skiing, mountain climbing, parachuting, scuba-diving, even brain surgery. The pig just wants to be left alone. Eventually, after a particularly loud party, the pig shouts at the duck, and the next morning finds a note pinned to the duck's front door. It reads: GONE AWAY. At first the pig is pleased. But gradually realises that his life without the duck is quiet and slightly dull. He comes to miss the duck and regrets rejecting him. One day there is a knock on the door and the pig opens it to find the duck wearing a som- brero and carrying a pinata. He'd only been on holiday in the South. He does it every year. Maybe next year the pig will join him.

Raymond Rush from Prescot, St Helens, was the only man from his Company who landed at D-Day and who fought the Third Reich all the way back to Germany. The rest of the 600 men who landed with him on Sword Beach were wiped out. They were front-line soldiers whose duty was to go in first and clear the way. The heroism of these working-class volunteers from the South Lancs regiment never made it into the history books, because no one was alive to write their story. No one, except for Raymond Rush, the last man standing. Now, for the very first time, his remarkable true story is told.

Never Surrender: Winston Churchill and Britain's Decision to Fight Nazi Germany in the Fateful Summer of 1940
"WWII scholar John Kelly triumphs again" (Vanity Fair) in this remarkably vivid account of a key moment in Western history: The critical six months in 1940 when Winston Churchill debated whether England should fight Nazi Germany--and then decided to "never surrender." London in April, 1940, is a place of great fear and conflict. The Germans have taken Poland, France, Holland, Belgium, and Czechoslovakia. The Nazi war machine now menaces Britain, even as America remains uncommitted to providing military aid. Should Britain negotiate with Germany? The members of the War Cabinet bicker, yell, and are divided. Churchill, leading the faction to fight, and Lord Halifax, cautioning that prudence is the way to survive, attempt to usurp one another by any means possible. In Never Surrender, we feel we are alongside these complex and imperfect men, determining the fate of the British Empire, and perhaps, the world. Drawing on the War Cabinet papers, other government documents, private diaries, newspaper accounts, and memoirs, historian John Kelly tells the story of the summer of 1940. Kelly takes readers from the battlefield to Parliament, to the government ministries, to the British high command, to the desperate Anglo-French conference in Paris and London, to the American embassy in London, and to life with the ordinary Britons. We see Churchill seize the historical moment and ultimately inspire his government, military, and people to fight. Kelly brings to life one of the most heroic moments of the twentieth century and intimately portrays some of its largest players--Churchill, Lord Halifax, Hitler, FDR, Joe Kennedy, and others. Never Surrender is a fabulous, grand narrative of a crucial period in World War II and the men and women who shaped it. "For lovers of minute-by-minute history, it's a feast" (Huffington Post).

Whether it’s tightly rolled up between two nervous, wringing hands, proudly sticking out from a quick-stepping back pocket or carefully brought home to be kept for posterity, the match day programme is part of the very fabric of the GAA and in The GAA Covered this glorious document gets its long overdue day in the sun. The GAA Covered is a stunning visual compendium of over 100 years of GAA programme covers from 1913 to the present day, and an invaluable collection of local, social and sports history. Each page of this comprehensive collection features striking images of that year’s provincial and All-Ireland final match programmes, along with superb captions of context and colour. John Kelly’s labour of love will mesmerise GAA fans – from the diehard who will appreciate the compilation of such a wide range of programmes to the casual fan who will be enthralled by the immense beauty of the book.
Stalini päästmine. Roosevelt, churchill ja stalin: liitlaste võidu hind euroopas
Onasju, millest ajalugu pigem soovib vaikida.
