War hero, Medal of Honor recipient, and subject of an Oscar-winning film, Sgt. Alvin York was the most famous soldier of his generation. But behind the honors and publicity was an uncompromising Christian patriot who suffered when his ideals were challenged by shifting views of faith, patriotism, and moral relativism. Untouched by German gunfire, York faced destruction from disease, disrespect, and the IRS. Sgt. York: His Life, Legend, and Legacy reveals the whole story of this great American figure based on original battlefield eyewitness reports, Hollywood archives, and interviews with York’s family and friends. This new edition includes a message from York’s ninety-year-old son, Andrew Jackson York.

In Nuclear Weapons and the Environment, John Perry highlights the environmental damage caused by nuclear device testing. The failure of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and the continued proliferation of nuclear weapons is a grave risk to not only human life but to the environment. Pointing to the unstable political situation between a variety of state and non-state actors, the remediation of nuclear test sites, and the risks involved in the production of nuclear weapons, Perry makes a clear case for the dire importance of non-proliferation.
How Cities Making the Same Choices Will Reap the Same Results
For fifty years 'Detroit' has been shorthand for all that's wrong with urban America: crime, corruption, decay, racial tension, struggling businesses, failing schools, a declining tax base, and more. Between 2000 and 2017, its population fell 28 percent, a steeper drop than any other major American city. A third of its land now lies vacant or dotted with empty, derelict houses. The good news is there are unmistakable signs of renewal in Detroit. Given a fresh start, Detroit has slowed its rate of population decline, stabilized its finances, and set out to prove to the world that it's once again open for business.

Grip morgendagen! Parables in Times of Moral Conflict

Parables in Times of Moral Conflict

John Perry

Why do our most important moral debates seem to go so badly? Sometimes, of course, trolls or manipulative influencers undermine good-faith conversations--where people get 'destroyed' on TikTok and 'schooled' on Instagram--but often these debates go badly for a more mundane reason: they are hard work and it takes practice to get good at them. Part I relays the bad news about these fights: the old peace plans will not help us. They tried to solve disagreements by getting emotions, ideology, or God out of the picture; such strategies have often been a cure worse than the disease. John Perry demonstrates why our previous attempts to make peace in the face of modern pluralism have not helped, and shows how we can get better through practice. This is the good news of Part II: Perry uncovers a canon of 'parables'--thought experiments or analogies--that can help humanize and rationalize our discussions before our violent passions take over. Some of these parables are well-known, like Philippa Foot's Trolley Problem, which she devised to help calm one aspect of the abortion debate. Some are less well-known including analogies about food and sex, disability and alcoholism, foetuses and acorns, eugenics and The Last of the Mohicans, and even conservation hunting for black rhinos. Writing with an impressive depth of learning in ethics, psychology, theology, and politics, Perry tackles controversial issues like marriage, euthanasia, public reason, and the Bible, all with a mix of sensitivity and good humor.
Social Mobilization and the Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia

Social Mobilization and the Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia

The Ebola virus disease represented a grave crisis for Liberia. After many years of civil conflict its health system had been weakened and there were too few physicians and health care workers who were willing and able to deal effectively with the disease which spread far beyond Africa to Europe and the United States of America. The book offers a convenient summary of the background of the EVD crisis, and the ways it was defeated by the public who were energized by the gravity of the situation. It discusses the lessons learned, the effect of the disease on children, and the way forward for the international health care system to prepare itself better for possible future epidemics of the same scale and gravity.
Science-Engaged Theology

Science-Engaged Theology

This Element presents science-engaged theology as a reminder to theologians to use the local tools and products of the sciences as sources for theological reflection. Using critiques of modernity and secularism, the Element questions the idea that Science and Religion were ever transhistorical categories. The Element also encourages theologians to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines in a highly localised manner that enables theologians to make concrete claims with accountability and show how theological realities are entangled with the empirical world. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This best-selling text emphasizes why social and cultural changes are the pervasive realities of our time. A key theme of Contemporary Society is that the transition from an industrial to a post-industrial order in today’s world is fraught with difficulties, as was the transition from an agricultural to an industrial order in an earlier era. Within this framework, we can observe the increasing fragmentation of the social order today, which tends to lead people away from community and a common purpose, more often bringing conflict and disunity. Still, countervailing social forces are also at work, providing some stability--some shelter in a sea of change. Ever more, societies are faced with the rapid and transformative power of information technology, which helps propel separate groups of people into a global entity. This introduction to the social sciences shows what the authors have learned from such disciplines as anthropology, geography, history, sociology, psychology, political science, and economics--and how to apply social science approaches to an ever-faster tempo of change. The authors cover family life, interaction with others, racial and ethnic diversity, education, religion, population, environment, and many other topics analyzed in a student-friendly approach.New to this EditionThe integration and flow of the text has been improved for better student comprehension. Expanded selection of Web Links to many more sites for student research, many relevant to their interests and entertainment choicesEnriched focus on applying social science knowledge to current events (transcending a complete reliance on assumptions from the media)New/expanded coverage on topics throughout the book, including New findings from global warming research and its implications for social life and policy New developments in race relations in an integrated approach throughout many chapters Deepening inequality and the implications that threaten family, education, and student futures—nationally and globally Gender, including new developments in legal gay marriage and transgender Expanded coverage of genetics and the medical potential of human genome sequencing New developments in astrophysics and their potential implications for society Updated Statistics throughout

""Black Robe And Buckskin: The Story Of Catholic Pioneering In Northern North America"" by John Perry Pritchett is a historical account of the Catholic Church's efforts to establish a presence in Northern North America during the 17th and 18th centuries. The book explores the challenges faced by Catholic missionaries as they attempted to convert and establish communities among the indigenous peoples of the region. Pritchett provides detailed descriptions of the cultural clashes and misunderstandings that occurred between the missionaries and the native populations, as well as the difficulties of navigating the harsh wilderness environments of the area. The book also examines the impact of Catholicism on the region's indigenous cultures and the long-term legacy of the Church's efforts. Overall, ""Black Robe And Buckskin"" offers a fascinating look at the intersection of religion, culture, and history in Northern North America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
