The Nehemiah Blueprint: A Biblical Look at Rebuilding the Rubble in Urban Communities

The Nehemiah Blueprint: A Biblical Look at Rebuilding the Rubble in Urban Communities

The Book of Nehemiah is an awesome testimony that when God has a purpose for a group of people, He does not forget about them. Through ups and downs, God remembers. Sometimes we may be tempted to think that when walls fall down around us, God has thrown up His hands and left us to perish. Nothing could be further from the truth I believe that even your reading this book is evidence that God is working behind the scenes in the hearts of modern day Nehemiahs and Ezras to bring His eternal purposes to pass. As mentioned at the outset of this work, either God knows all and is in control of all, or He's not God at all. There is one more thing I'd like to point out as we anticipate turning this blueprint into footprints. Whatever we accomplish in terms of rebuilding the rubble is all about God. It is not your name or my name that is at stake. It is not your community or my community that matters most. Because the vision (and all that follows) comes from God, it is God's own reputation that is on the line, thus it is God who will bring the work to pass-and it is God who deserves the glory Several times in Nehemiah 13, Nehemiah pauses at the end of major sections (i.e. verses 14, 22, and 31) to pray. His prayer is not long and drawn out. In fact there are five words that he repeats each time, "Remember me, Oh my God " He wasn't asking for personal support. He was asking that God would remember the work that He had called him to accomplish. He was asking that God's energy would enable his efforts. He was working, but it was God's work. As we continue to build walls that have fallen in our own back yards, may we be reminded that the work is greater than any pastor's reputation or church's name. It is God's work. We are merely servants who have been selected to carry out the vision of our King. May God "remember us."

Up in the Bear Cave is the powerful story of a reclusive mountain woman who has kept a dark secret for thirty years. Etta Pines is gravely ill and desperately wants to protect the memory of her sister, Ivy. She shares her story after extracting a promise that the writer will record it just as she tells it. The writer discovers there is more to Etta's story than she has chosen to tell him, which leads to a suspenseful ending that asks: "What really happened on that fateful night on the blowing rock?"
A Slightly Hagiographic History of Classics at the University of Virginia: From 1825 to 1970
This brief account traces the history of Classics at the University of Virginia largely through biographies of the faculty from the University's first session in 1825 to 1970. 1970 was chosen as the terminus because the author joined the Department of Classics that year, and he prefers to write of the past, as Herodotus did, not of the present, as Thucydides. He also prefers the rambling, somewhat disorganized, anecdotal, and picaresque character of Herodotus' Histories. He has chosen not to follow Professor Ward Briggs who, in his 1986 essay on Gildersleeve and the University, sternly notes that "information is available, but much of the biographical rubbish that finds its way into self-serving university histories and old-boy memoirs must be judged severely." The author has not only not avoided such "biographical rubbish" but has embraced it warmly. Classicists, if any readers, should appreciate the charm and power of mythology, ancient or modern. Caveat Lector. Like Herodotus the author seldom gives or attempts seriously to verify his sources. Some may be found in the bibliography, but many are scrounged from nooks and crannies of the Internet and the University of Virginia Special Collections Library. The author hopes, however, that like Herodotus' Histories, much more of this "history" will be found to be "true" than not, and that this "history" will at least provide an enjoyable read for the University of Virginia's classicists of the past, present, and future.

We live under the illusion of progress: as long as GDP is going up and prices stay low, we accept poverty and pollution as unfortunate but inevitable byproducts of a successful economy. In fact, the infallibility of the free market and the necessity of endless growth are so ingrained in the public consciousness that they seem like scientific fact. Jon Erickson asks, why? With the planet in peril and humanity in crisis, how did we get duped into believing the fairytale of economics? And how can we get past the illusion to design an economy that is socially just and ecologically balanced? In The Progress Illusion, Erickson charts the rise of the economic worldview and its infiltration into our daily lives as a theory of everything. Drawing on his own experience as a young economist inoculated in the 1980s era of “greed is good,” Erickson shows how pseudoscience came to dominate economic thought. He pokes holes in the conventional wisdom of neo-classical economics, illustrating how flawed theories about financial decision-making and maximizing efficiency ignore human psychology and morality. Most importantly, he demonstrates how that thinking shaped our politics and determined the course of American public policy. The result has been a system that perpetually concentrates wealth in the hands of a few, while depleting the natural resources on which economies are based. While the history of economics is dismal indeed, Erickson is part of a vigorous reform effort grounded in the realities of life on a finite planet. This new brand of economics is both gaining steam in academia and supporting social activism. The goal is people over profit, community over consumption, and resilience over recklessness. Erickson shows crafting a new economic story is the first step toward turning away from endless growth and towards enduring prosperity.

This book begins by exploring the mysterious origins of an institution so familiar that most of us never wonder where it came from—the seven-day week. Jon D. Levenson then focuses on the historical development of the Jewish Sabbath and the rich range of theological and ethical meanings it has acquired over the centuries.Levenson evaluates the theory that the Hebrew word šabbat derives from Akkadian and that the Sabbath may have begun as a day of ill omen, only later to be reinterpreted as the joyous festival that consummates the seven-day week. He explores the quasi-magical character of the number seven in ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean compositions and examines the revealing variation of the Sabbath commandment between the two biblical versions of the Decalogue in Exodus and Deuteronomy. He also treats sabbatical law in the Second Temple and rabbinic periods, critiquing contemporary efforts to extract a spirituality from the Sabbath that is divorced from larger questions of communal identity, normative practice, and religious affirmation. Levenson concludes by discussing modern challenges to Sabbath observance and the surprising prospects for its continuation.Written by an eminent scholar in the field, this sophisticated inquiry bridges the gap between studies that explore the spiritual meaning of Jewish Sabbath observance and those that focus strictly on the history of the tradition. It will appeal to a wide audience of academics and lay readers.

"My name is Q. Chase, and I don't know who I am. Every day I want to kill someone, and every day, I want to save everyone. I have sixteen voices, whole identities in my head begging me to set them free. Who am I? I may never know, but I did see the sunrise again, one more time. I can always be thankful for that. "I know that makes me sound like a madman, I feel like a madman, but I can assure you that I am not mad. I have tried everything I could think of, my shrink could think of, but nothing helps me like a murder or a mystery. My heart is good, and my faith in God holds back my madness. If you knew my story, you would feel sorry for me, but I don't want that. I hate pity, while another part of you would despise me as a villain, the one thing I never wanted to be" WHO IS Q CHASE?
