The Progress Illusion

The Progress Illusion

Jon D Erickson

We live under the illusion of progress: as long as GDP is going up and prices stay low, we accept poverty and pollution as unfortunate but inevitable byproducts of a successful economy. In fact, the infallibility of the free market and the necessity of endless growth are so ingrained in the public consciousness that they seem like scientific fact. Jon Erickson asks, why? With the planet in peril and humanity in crisis, how did we get duped into believing the fairytale of economics? And how can we get past the illusion to design an economy that is socially just and ecologically balanced? In The Progress Illusion, Erickson charts the rise of the economic worldview and its infiltration into our daily lives as a theory of everything. Drawing on his own experience as a young economist inoculated in the 1980s era of “greed is good,” Erickson shows how pseudoscience came to dominate economic thought. He pokes holes in the conventional wisdom of neo-classical economics, illustrating how flawed theories about financial decision-making and maximizing efficiency ignore human psychology and morality. Most importantly, he demonstrates how that thinking shaped our politics and determined the course of American public policy. The result has been a system that perpetually concentrates wealth in the hands of a few, while depleting the natural resources on which economies are based. While the history of economics is dismal indeed, Erickson is part of a vigorous reform effort grounded in the realities of life on a finite planet. This new brand of economics is both gaining steam in academia and supporting social activism. The goal is people over profit, community over consumption, and resilience over recklessness. Erickson shows crafting a new economic story is the first step toward turning away from endless growth and towards enduring prosperity.
Israel’s Day of Light and Joy

Israel’s Day of Light and Joy

Jon D. Levenson

This book begins by exploring the mysterious origins of an institution so familiar that most of us never wonder where it came from—the seven-day week. Jon D. Levenson then focuses on the historical development of the Jewish Sabbath and the rich range of theological and ethical meanings it has acquired over the centuries.Levenson evaluates the theory that the Hebrew word šabbat derives from Akkadian and that the Sabbath may have begun as a day of ill omen, only later to be reinterpreted as the joyous festival that consummates the seven-day week. He explores the quasi-magical character of the number seven in ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean compositions and examines the revealing variation of the Sabbath commandment between the two biblical versions of the Decalogue in Exodus and Deuteronomy. He also treats sabbatical law in the Second Temple and rabbinic periods, critiquing contemporary efforts to extract a spirituality from the Sabbath that is divorced from larger questions of communal identity, normative practice, and religious affirmation. Levenson concludes by discussing modern challenges to Sabbath observance and the surprising prospects for its continuation.Written by an eminent scholar in the field, this sophisticated inquiry bridges the gap between studies that explore the spiritual meaning of Jewish Sabbath observance and those that focus strictly on the history of the tradition. It will appeal to a wide audience of academics and lay readers.

"My name is Q. Chase, and I don't know who I am. Every day I want to kill someone, and every day, I want to save everyone. I have sixteen voices, whole identities in my head begging me to set them free. Who am I? I may never know, but I did see the sunrise again, one more time. I can always be thankful for that. I need a distraction. Will someone just be murdered soon, please, or I am going to lose my mind. I have to feed the voices, or they are going to eat me." "I know that makes me sound like a madman, I feel like a madman, but I can assure you that I am not mad. I have tried everything I could think of, my shrink could think of, but nothing helps me like a murder or a mystery. My heart is good, and my faith in God holds back my madness. If you knew my story, you would feel sorry for me, but I don't want that. I hate pity, while another part of you would despise me as a villain, the one thing I never wanted to be" WHO IS Q CHASE? "Shifted" is a book about Q. Chase, a man with sixteen other personalities living inside him. He uses their gifts and abilities, he is capable of anything from fighting to languages. He is unimpressive on the outside, but supernatural with his actions. He works with the FBI and local law enforcement in Austin, Texas after a string of mysterious murders go unexplained. This is a battle of good over evil, and Q. Chase must choose between the life he wants to live or the dream never thought possible.

Slanting Board

Dr. Bernard Jensen lectured throughout the U.S. and around the world about health and nutrition. Early on he would tape record his lectures and then later have them typed up into booklets. He would staple them together and sell them through mail order or at his lectures. There are 21 lecture reprint booklets. The information is as timely today as it was when he started teaching about right living in the early 1940's. I have edited, revised and added to the booklets, but left the flavor of that time period and his distinct voice comes through as the content reflects his speaking more than writing style. Writers tend to stay away from writing like they are speaking when writing a book, but Dr. Bernard Jensen was adamant about his self-published books sounding like he was right there with you while you were reading his work. Lecture Reprint Booklet Number Four covers how to use the slant board and slant board exercises. The following are quotes from the book: "Gravity is a law of nature that affects the human body just as much as it affects the trees and plant life. We cannot escape from this inevitable law of nature, and so we should adapt ourselves to some procedure whereby we can overcome any ill effects we might suffer because of the effects of this law. The pull of gravity is always downward; the river flows downstream; the bird, when he loses his energy, drops back to the earth; the blade of grass, when not properly nourished, turns back into the earth. Man exists under this law also and, if he is tired and exhausted, he feels the pull of gravity pulling him down he wishes to lie down and rest. When a person is full of pep and energy, he stands upright, walks with zest, has a good posture and develops tone in every muscle of his body which holds all of the organs in the proper position. He is the master, as he is meant to be; he has control of his body; he is greater than the law of gravity."
