Jordan Peele's Get Out Political Horror is a collection of sixteen essays devoted to exploring Get Out's roots in the horror tradition and its complex and timely commentary on twenty-first-century US race relations. The first section, "The Politics of Horror," traces the influence of the gothic and horror tradition on Peele's film, from Shakespeare's Othello, through the female gothic and Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives, to the modern horror film, including the zombie, rural, suburban, and body-swap subgenres of horror. The second section, "The Horror of Politics," takes up Get Out's varied political interventions-notably its portrayal of the continuation of slavery and the deformation of the black body and mind in white, so-called progressive America. Contributors address Peele's film alongside African American figures such as Nat Turner, W. E. B. Du Bois, and James Baldwin. Taken together, the essays illuminate how Get Out stands as both a groundbreaking intervention in the horror tradition as well as a devastating unmasking of racism in the contemporary United States.

A telling history of one of the most important relationships in the Middle East This is the first book to tell the remarkable story of the relationship between Jordan and the United States and how their leaders have navigated the dangerous waters of the most volatile region in the world.Jordan has been an important ally of the United States for more than seventy years, thanks largely to two members of the Hashemite family: King Hussein, who came to power at the age of 17 in 1952 and governed for nearly a half-century, and his son, King Abdallah, who inherited the throne in 1999. Both survived numerous assassination attempts, wars, and plots by their many enemies in the region. Both ruled with a firm hand but without engaging in the dictatorial extremes so common to the region.American presidents from Eisenhower to Biden have worked closely with the two Hashemite kings to maintain peace and stability in the region?when possible. The relationship often has been rocky, punctuated by numerous crises, but in the end, it has endured and thrived.Long-time Middle East expert Bruce Riedel tells the story of the U.S.-Jordanian relationship with his characteristic insight, flair, and eye for telling details. For anyone interested in the region, understanding this story will provide new insights into the Arab-Israeli conflict, the multiple Persian Gulf wars, and the endless quest to bring long-term peace and stability to the region.

Published for Jordan Casteel’s major New Museum show, Within Reach surveys her paintings exploring the nuances of Black subjectivity In her large-scale oil paintings, New York-based artist Jordan Casteel (born 1989) takes up questions of Black subjectivity and representation by examining the gestures, spaces and forms of nonverbal communication that underpin portraiture. “There is a certain amount of mindfulness that it requires ... to be present with someone in a moment.” she explains. “I’ve always had an inclination towards seeing people who might be easily be unseen.” Published for Casteel’s first solo museum exhibition in New York, this volume brings together 40 large-scale paintings from throughout her career, including works from the celebrated series Visible Man (2013-14) and Nights in Harlem (2017), along with recent cropped “subway paintings” and portraits of her students at Rutgers University-Newark. Whether depicting former classmates from Yale, nude and in serene repose; street vendors near her home in Harlem; anonymous New Yorkers huddled on the subway; or her own students, posed largely in domestic interiors among their personal belongings, she explores how both public and private spheres can serve as frames for an inner life. This generously illustrated, oversized publication honors the larger-than-life scale of the artist's work. It is the first comprehensive monographic publication on Casteel’s work and includes texts by Dawoud Bey, Amanda Hunt and Lauren Haynes, and conversations conducted with the artist by Massimiliano Gioni and Thelma Golden.

Jordan in the Late Middle Ages

The decline of the Mamluk Sultanate from the late fourteenth century is an important component of the larger transformation of the late medieval Levant. In this centralized state, the Mamluks political culture has traditionally been defined by that of the imperial capital of Cairo. The political decline of the sultanate in Cairo has, then, come to define the many-faceted transformations of the entire region with the waning of the medieval era. The dynamics of change far from Cairo, in remote settlements on the imperial frontier, are, by contrast, relatively unknown. This book explores the transformation of the Mamluk state from the perspective of the Jordanian frontier, considering the actions of local people in molding both the state and their own societies in the post-plague era. Through a critical analysis of a wide range of economic and legal documents of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman periods, as well as data on rural society generated by recent archaeological research, the work documents the complex, dialectical relationships that always existed between the Mamluk state and the tribal societies of Jordan, as well as the flexible strategies pursued by both to adapt to changing circumstances during the late medieval period. It is ultimately a provincial perspective on imperial decline, reform, and rebirth that sheds new light on the mechanisms of socio-political and economic change through the experiences of ordinary people living on the margins of empire. The book is illustrated with more than two dozen photographs and 6 maps.

In Jordan Kingston Keeping the Secret, Jordan and his cousin, Brayden, will take you on a ride through the believable or unbelievable possibility of Aliens. -Are extraterrestrials spying on us? Did people see flying saucers? How about those crop circles? Have you ever thought there are aliens and flying saucers flying around making them? Or, are there just some pranksters out there having fun in the fields? What about Roswell, New Mexico? In July 1947, a craft crashed in the desert. The Roswell Army Airbase was involved in recovering the craft and there were, possibly, "bodies" reported?Okay. Now, truthfully, what do you think?Have you seen a UFO, or do you know of someone who swears they have seen one?Jordan Kingston, the main character along with his best friend (and cousin), Brayden, explore the possibilities that aliens visited earth thousands of years ago, and maybe even now. Jordan is a believer in "Alientology," a word coined to describe the study and belief in aliens and how they have impacted human civilization. Jordan believes in the possibility that extraterrestrials did visit the Earth in ancient times giving knowledge and guidance to ancient civilizations so as to advance their cultures. There came a time when Jordan. and eventually Brayden, were introduced to real Aliens by their grandpa. They were brought into a group the Aliens call the "Knowing." Jordan, now in the Knowing group, was taken aside and told that he is an Alien himself. Going through many learning sessions, he will be taught everything from the Aliens past to the present. Now Jordan is under Tarke's guidance, the captain of the Alien's spaceship at the bottom of Lake Michigan. You have the book open, so get in and enjoy their continued journey through Jordan's adventure trying to find out as much as he can and keeping his secret.
