Celebrating an artistic and intellectual friendship This book encompasses a broad range of conversations between Jan Tumlir and Jorge Pardo, which span a period of 20 years, beginning in 1999. Cuban-born, Mexico-based artist Jorge Pardo (born 1963) explores the intersection of contemporary painting, design, sculpture and architecture. Employing a broad palette of vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and natural and industrial materials, Pardo’s works range from murals to home furnishings to collages to larger-than-life fabrications. Here in conversation with art writer, teacher and curator Jan Tumlir (born 1962), he discusses contemporary art, design, publishing and music. The conversations also connect to the varied contexts of Los Angeles and Merida, Mexico, where they took place. The result is a story of a unique intellectual friendship that has helped define both of their thinking and practice.

Como un an lisis, y no una cr tica.En lo que podr amos llamar pr logo o presentaci n, el autor se preocup m s por la magia y la fant stica intervenci n del Hombre Estrella, por considerar que tal vez podr a ser, por novedoso, la ra z de una nueva corriente literaria donde la musa, ngel, o el ser incorp reo, toma un papel real al reclamar su obra destinada a dos receptores, en esta caso, Jorge y Arturo.Es all donde el ngel deja de "pensar" como tal, se confunde, y termina perdido como el autor al descuidar, o no darle importancia a la sabia interpretaci n en lo que podr a terminar el planeta Tierra si lo escrito se toma como una premonici n, o sencillamente como un chispazo visionario dado a la fecha en que se escribi este libro. O simplemente se realiz como una actitud l gica que cualquiera sabe, que si las cabezas de gobierno no llegan entender que con el proceder da ino con que ejercen el poder llevar n al caos al planeta. Jorge Semprún is a leading writer from the first generation of Spanish Civil War exiles, yet studies of his work have often focused solely on his literary testimony to the concentration camps and his political activities. Although Semprún’s work derives from his incarceration in Buchenwald and his expulsion from the Spanish Communist Party in 1964, limiting the discussion of his works to the autobiographical details or to the realm of Holocaust studies is reductive. The responses by many influential writers to his recent death highlight that the significance of Semprún’s work goes beyond the testimony of historical events. His self-identification as a Spanish exile has often been neglected and there is no comprehensive study of his works available in English. This book provides a global view of his œuvre and extends literary analysis to texts that have received little critical attention. The author investigates the role played by memory in some of Semprún’s works, drawing on current debates in the field of memory studies. A detailed analysis of these works allows related concepts, such as exile and nostalgia, the Holocaust, the interplay between memory and writing, politics and collective memory, and postmemory and identity, to be examined and discussed.

El presente volumen recoge doce contribuciones ineditas de estudiosos de la obra de Jorge Semprun pertenecientes a varias universidades europeas. En ellas sus autores han intentado acercarse a la figura y la obra de Jorge Semprun (1923-2011) a traves de diferentes perspectivas. Efectivamente, Semprun se encontro a lo largo de su vida en un constante cruce de caminos. Desde su adolescencia debio dividirse entre dos lenguas, vivir con varias identidades: la del " rojo espanol " o del deportado a Buchenwald, la de la clandestinidad comunista espanola; y mas tarde la del escritor a partir de ElLargo Viaje (1963). Este libro le abrio en cierto modo las puertas del reconocimiento como intelectual europeo. Atravesando diferentes lugares y tiempos, y paraprotegerse contra la esquizofrenia que siente aduenarse de el, Semprun toma la decision de escribir y trata de hacerlo en distintos generos. Le present volume rassemble une douzaine de contributions inedites de specialistes de l'oeuvre de Jorge Semprun (1923-2011) provenant de plusieurs universites europeennes. Les auteurs cherchent a approcher sa figure et son oeuvre a travers differentes perspectives. En effet, Semprun se trouva tout au long de sa vie a la croisee des chemins. Partage depuis son adolescence entre deux langues, il vecut avec plusieurs identites successives: celle du "rouge espagnol" ou du deporte a Buchenwald, celle de la clandestinite communiste espagnole; puis celle de l'ecrivain a partir du Grand Voyage (1963). Ce livre lui ouvrit d'une certaine facon les portes d'une reconnaissance comme intellectuel europeen. En traversant des epoques et des lieux differents, et pour se proteger contre la schizophrenie qu'il sent s'emparer de lui, Semprun decide d'ecrire en s'essayant a des genres varies.
