Terrorists constantly present new challenges to law enforcement, emergency response teams, security planners, and others involved in counterterrorism. Since the last edition of this volume was published, additional atrocities have occurred and new threats have surfaced. The fourth edition of The Counterterrorism Handbook: Tactics, Procedures, and Techniques provides the latest developments and offers new insights on the War on Terror.Updated to reflect an increased focus on terrorism in public transportation, this volume provides an understanding of the strategies, tactics, and techniques required to tackle terrorism as it exists today. It illustrates essential topics such as the elements common to all terrorism, bomb threats, risk assessment, hostages, and weapons of mass destruction. It also presents case studies of some of the most notorious terrorist incidents, including both World Trade Center attacks, Oklahoma City, Centennial Olympic Park, the U.S. Embassy, the U.S.S. Cole, and attacks in Madrid, London, and Glasgow. The only way to effectively deal with terrorism is to have a thorough understanding of its present-day characteristics — who is involved and what weapons and tactics they are likely to use. In language friendly to first responders, this volume presents a comprehensive strategy of how to deal with a whole gamut of possible terrorist incidents. Covering everything from bombings and hostage-taking to nuclear terrorism, the book describes in specific detail what needs to be done before, during, and after an event. Armed with this information, those charged with protecting the public will be better equipped to face myriad threats.

Faith Has Its Reasons – Integrative Approaches to Defending the Christian Faith

Faith Has Its Reasons – Integrative Approaches to Defending the Christian Faith

Kenneth Boa; Robert M. Bowman Jr.

Ever since the apostle Paul addressed the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers in Athens, relating the Christian worldview to a non-Christian world has been a challenge. And despite Peter's charge to be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you (1 Peter 3:15), most Christian laypeople have left apologetics—the defense of the faith—to the ecclesiastical pros. Faith Has Its Reasons is a study of four different models of how apologetics should be done, an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses, and a proposal for integrating the best insights of each. Kenneth Boa and Robert Bowman have assembled a wealth of information about what Christians believe and how to present that faith to an unbelieving world. Remarkable both in its depth of content and ease of accessibility, Faith Has Its Reasons gives Christian laypeople the tools to address such critical questions as: Why is belief in God rational despite the prevalence of evil in the world? What facts support the church's testimony that Jesus rose from the dead? Can we be certain Christianity is true? How can our faith in Christ be based on something more secure than our own understanding without descending into an irrational emotionalism?

""Early Man in the New World"" is a comprehensive book by Kenneth Macgowan that explores the history of the first humans who inhabited the Americas. The book covers the period from the arrival of the first humans in the Americas over 12,000 years ago to the development of complex civilizations such as the Aztecs and Incas. Macgowan provides a detailed analysis of the archaeological evidence and scientific research that has been conducted to understand the lifestyles, cultures, and beliefs of the early human inhabitants of the Americas. The book also delves into the controversies surrounding the origins of these early humans and their migration patterns. The author discusses the different theories and hypotheses proposed by researchers and scientists over the years, including the Clovis-first theory, which suggests that the first humans arrived in the Americas via a land bridge that connected Asia and North America during the last Ice Age. The book also explores the cultural and technological advancements of these early humans, such as the development of agriculture, the creation of pottery, and the construction of impressive structures such as the pyramids of the Maya and Aztec civilizations. Overall, ""Early Man in the New World"" is a fascinating and informative read that sheds light on the rich history of the Americas and the remarkable achievements of its early inhabitants.Foreword By Gordon F. Ekholm. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The student-athlete's life: practice, gym, weight room, film review, repeat. Simply put, sports come first. Academics is a distant second. In this timely new edition of the award-winning The Miseducation of the Student-Athlete, authors Kenneth L. Shropshire and Collin D. Williams, Jr. provide essential context for understanding college sports in an era transformed by Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. While student-athletes can now profit from their personal brands--with some earning more than $4 million annually--the fundamental challenge remains: balancing athletics with meaningful education. The book's original groundbreaking analysis of how to fix college sports is now preceded by a new preface that examines the post-2021 revolution in collegiate athletics. The authors explore how NIL rights have affected the student-athlete experience while reinforcing their central argument that education must remain paramount. Their Student-Athlete Manifesto and Meaningful Degree Model remain more relevant than ever as institutions navigate these unprecedented changes. Drawing on their extensive experience in sports leadership and education, Shropshire and Williams offer crucial insights for athletic departments, policy makers, and athletes themselves as they work to ensure that the "student" in student-athlete isn't lost amid new financial opportunities. This updated edition serves both as an introduction for new readers and a vital update for those familiar with the original work.

A Primer of Permutation Statistical Methods

A Primer of Permutation Statistical Methods

The primary purpose of this textbook is to introduce the reader to a wide variety of elementary permutation statistical methods. Permutation methods are optimal for small data sets and non-random samples, and are free of distributional assumptions. The book follows the conventional structure of most introductory books on statistical methods, and features chapters on central tendency and variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, one-way fully-randomized analysis of variance, one-way randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple regression and correlation, and the analysis of contingency tables. In addition, it introduces and describes a comparatively new permutation-based, chance-corrected measure of effect size. Because permutation tests and measures are distribution-free, do not assume normality, and do not rely on squared deviations among sample values, they are currently being applied in a wide variety of disciplines. This book presents permutation alternatives to existing classical statistics, and is intended as a textbook for undergraduate statistics courses or graduate courses in the natural, social, and physical sciences, while assuming only an elementary grasp of statistics.

Permutation Statistical Methods with R

Springer Nature Switzerland AG

This book takes a unique approach to explaining permutation statistics by integrating permutation statistical methods with a wide range of classical statistical methods and associated R programs. It opens by comparing and contrasting two models of statistical inference: the classical population model espoused by J. Neyman and E.S. Pearson and the permutation model first introduced by R.A. Fisher and E.J.G. Pitman. Numerous comparisons of permutation and classical statistical methods are presented, supplemented with a variety of R scripts for ease of computation. The text follows the general outline of an introductory textbook in statistics with chapters on central tendency and variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, completely-randomized analysis of variance, randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple linear regression and correlation, and the analysis of goodness of fit and contingency. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity, depend only on the observed data, and do not require random sampling. The methods are relatively new in that it took modern computing power to make them available to those working in mainstream research. Designed for an audience with a limited statistical background, the book can easily serve as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses in statistics, psychology, economics, political science or biology. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required, but some knowledge of, or some interest in, the R programming language is assumed.

A Chronicle of Permutation Statistical Methods

A Chronicle of Permutation Statistical Methods

Springer International Publishing AG
2014
sidottu
The focus of this book is on the birth and historical development of permutation statistical methods from the early 1920s to the near present. Beginning with the seminal contributions of R.A. Fisher, E.J.G. Pitman, and others in the 1920s and 1930s, permutation statistical methods were initially introduced to validate the assumptions of classical statistical methods. Permutation methods have advantages over classical methods in that they are optimal for small data sets and non-random samples, are data-dependent, and are free of distributional assumptions. Permutation probability values may be exact, or estimated via moment- or resampling-approximation procedures. Because permutation methods are inherently computationally-intensive, the evolution of computers and computing technology that made modern permutation methods possible accompanies the historical narrative. Permutation analogs of many well-known statistical tests are presented in a historical context, includingmultiple correlation and regression, analysis of variance, contingency table analysis, and measures of association and agreement. A non-mathematical approach makes the text accessible to readers of all levels.
