Fault Lines

Fault Lines

Kevin M. Kruse; Julian E. Zelizer

WW Norton Co

nidottu
In the middle of the 1970s, America entered a new era of doubt and division. Major political, economic and social crises—Watergate, Vietnam, the rights revolutions of the 1960s–had cracked the existing social order. In the years that followed, the story of our own lifetimes would be written. Longstanding historical fault lines over income inequality, racial division and a revolution in gender roles and sexual norms would deepen and fuel a polarised political landscape. In Fault Lines, leading historians Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer reveal how the divisions of the present day began almost four decades ago, and how they were echoed and amplified by a fracturing media landscape that witnessed the rise of cable TV, the Internet and social media. How did the United States become so divided? Fault Lines offers one of the few comprehensive, wide-angle history views towards an answer.

Sociology for Pharmacists: An Introduction is written specifically for professionals and students in pharmacy who are newcomers to the study of sociology. It introduces the key concepts of sociology and demonstrates their importance and application to pharmacy practice in the 21st century. It is unique in its role as the only text to introduce sociology specifically to pharmacists. Rather than an exhaustive treatment, the book provides a concise introduction to major perspectives in sociology-drawing on research evidence pertaining to health, illness, and professional practice-which will inform and enhance pharmacy practice. It offers an overview of sociology for rather than sociology of pharmacy, and will both inform practitioners and stimulate informed research into the social aspects of pharmacy practice.Key issues covered include:Key sociological concepts and perspectives Contemporary developments in pharmacy practice and pharmacy's professional status A review of research into the way people react to illness and look after their health How and why illness and disease are influenced by gender, ethnicity, and social class Health education and pharmacists' role in promoting health and ensuring appropriate medicine usage Social research methodsPharmacists are frequently encouraged to broaden their day-to-day practice. This timely book does just that by encouraging pharmacists to become more involved with advising clients, managing medicines, and supporting the promotion of health. In addition to providing an overview of these topics, the book also reviews the relevant research, and directs readers to further information.

One Nation Under God

One Nation Under God

We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God , historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the idea of Christian America" is an invention, and a relatively recent one at that.As Kruse argues, the belief that America is fundamentally and formally a Christian nation originated in the 1930s when businessmen enlisted religious activists in their fight against FDR's New Deal. Corporations from General Motors to Hilton Hotels bankrolled conservative clergymen, encouraging them to attack the New Deal as a program of pagan statism" that perverted the central principle of Christianity: the sanctity and salvation of the individual. Their campaign for freedom under God" culminated in the election of their close ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952.But this apparent triumph had an ironic twist. In Eisenhower's hands, a religious movement born in opposition to the government was transformed into one that fused faith and the federal government as never before. During the 1950s, Eisenhower revolutionized the role of religion in American political culture, inventing new traditions from inaugural prayers to the National Prayer Breakfast. Meanwhile, Congress added the phrase under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. With private groups joining in, church membership soared to an all-time high of 69%. For the first time, Americans began to think of their country as an officially Christian nation.During this moment, virtually all Americans, across the religious and political spectrum, believed that their country was one nation under God." But as Americans moved from broad generalities to the details of issues such as school prayer, cracks began to appear. Religious leaders rejected this lowest common denomination" public religion, leaving conservative political activists to champion it alone. In Richard Nixon's hands, a politics that conflated piety and patriotism became sole property of the right.Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how the unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.
Language, Music, and the Sign

Language, Music, and the Sign

Kevin M. Barry

Cambridge University Press
2010
pokkari
Originally published in 1987, this book forms a conceptual account of the relationship between music and poetry in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Kevin Barry argues that this relationship is more important than previous scholarship, with its emphasis on the visual analogy (comparing poetry with painting rather than with music), allowed for. Coleridge believed that music was 'the rhythm of the soul's movements' and declared himself to be 'in a state of Spirit much more akin' to Mozart's or Beethoven's than to that of any painter. Dr Barry examines in detail the ways of thinking about poetry, music and language (in its broadest sense) during the period that preceded Coleridge, referring to the work of philosophers and poets such as Hume, Berkeley, Rousseau, Collins, Blake, Cowper and Wordsworth, but also to lesser-known theorists such as James Usher, Thomas Twining, Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart and de Gerando.
Brothers in Arms: Remembering Brothers Buried Side by Side in American World War II Cemeteries
Featuring over 700 historic photographs and other original artifacts, Brothers in Arms tells the stories of brothers buried side by side in American World War II cemeteries overseas. Fourteen of these noble American cemeteries are spread around the world, holding the remains of over 90,000 fallen Americans and listing another 80,000 missing. All made the ultimate sacrifice so that others might live in peace and freedom. These sacred burial grounds are kept in meticulous care by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Any visitor is struck by the endless rows of white burial markers, fallen heroes resting far from their homes but among their comrades and often near the battlefields where they fell. Walking among the gravestones, it is especially heart-rending to come across two burial markers with the same last name, two brothers--in one case three--buried side by side. With memories and materials collected from the families who lost these brave brothers, Brothers in Arms puts a face and a story to those names carved in white marble. From North Africa to Europe to the Philippines, Brothers in Arms takes the reader on a journey--of the war, of America in the first half of the 20th century, and of these solemn resting places--all through the stories of these heroic brothers.

Calvin committed to memory his history in hopes of sparing himself the devastation of its repetition. But in the final analysis, was he any less doomed? Having persevered through personal trauma, he found contentment in Southern France, where he established a holiday-like existence, based largely on avoiding the traditional barbs of modern life. Then he met Klarysa Pavlichenko, the precocious granddaughter of an eccentric Ukrainian vintner. And everything changed. Set on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea at the end of the twentieth century, T te Press e follows a rowdy cast of characters in various states of obsession and pursuit, and offers a heady glimpse into the progression of a breakdown. With his highly ambitious, flamboyant first novel, Panozzo has betrayed an inner obsession to rival that of his tireless, raving characters. By turns aggressive and critical, sympathetic and forgiving, sober and brimming with drunken lunacy; ever poetic and scenic, T te Press e is a cracking work of literary fiction with enough whimsical banter and florid prose to bring Nabokov to full titter and grin from the grave.
