Based on the seminal work of Robert K. Greenleaf, a former AT&T executive who coined the term almost thirty years ago, servant - leadership emphasizes an emerging approach to leadership - one which puts serving others, including employees, customers, and community, first. The Power of Servant Leadership is a collection of eight of Greenleaf's most compelling essays on servant - leadership. These essays, published together in one volume for the first time, contain many of Greenleaf's best insights into the nature and practice of servant - leadership and show his continual refinement of the servant - as - leader concept. In addition, several of the essays focus on the related issues of spirit, commitment to vision, and wholeness.

Bringing Davy Home

Bringing Davy Home

Sherri Steward-Ganz; Larry C. Kinard

After some twenty years of research into original frontline letters, the US military’s Individual Deceased Personnel files, and accounts of the chaotic Korean War, author Sherri Steward has recovered a story that was lost for more than seventy years. Bringing Davy Home: In the Shadow of War, a Soldier’s Daughter Remembers chronicles the brutal combat experiences of two small-town Texas boys. One, an underage soldier, was killed in action only three weeks after arriving in Korea. Months later, the older brother he admired—a decorated World War II veteran—was compelled to join the same war that had already fractured his family. Bringing Davy Home examines the grievous burden heaped upon our warriors and their families, themselves forgotten casualties in the web of war. Through personal communications and interviews with hundreds of veterans and their families, Steward provides a haunting examination of the minds and hearts of young men who were thrust onto savage battlefields in service to their nation. Many did not survive. Many others came home alive but still carrying the shattering emotional burdens imposed by the horrors they witnessed. In 2023, there were more than 16 million veterans, thousands of whom remained tormented by indelible memories of war. Bringing Davy Home will shed new light on the pervasive problem of PTSD among our warriors, solemnly accounting the psychological costs paid by service members and their families.

This study was conceived in the winter of 1984, in response to the profession’s efforts to achieve counselor licensure. Licensure of counselors brought about the concern of what defines the practice of a professional counselor. The study had its origins in two sources: (a) the National Board for Certified Counselors’ and staff members’ functioning and (b) a commitment by NBCC to strengthen the credentialing of counselors and incur the expense to conduct a study of this magnitude.

The New Regional Economies

The New Regional Economies

William R. Barnes; Larry C. Ledebur

SAGE Publications Inc
1997
nidottu
Traditionally, we take a nationalist view of our economy. Our politics and economics are wedded in the political economy of the nation state and the nationalist economic policies. This "nationalist paradigm" is, however, showing signs of fatigue: The role of the nation state is diminishing as the economy globalizes; our national accounting systems are less effective, technology forces change; trading blocs are emerging; there is less control of exchange rates; regional economies are restructuring; and competitive environments are changing. This book poses that political jurisdictions are not economies but polities, and explores the complex and important economic implications of this thesis. In reality, metropolitan-centered economic regions are the basic economic units and the building blocks of the U.S. economy. The linked, interdependent system of local economic regions form the U.S. Common Market, which in turn thrives within a global context of mutuality and interdependence. William R. Barnes and Larry C. LedeburÆs paradigm shift from the "nation as the economy" to the "national system of local economic regions" changes the framework in which we think about governance and policy and puts this book at the forefront of U.S. economic thought.

Mathematical Theory of Reliability

Mathematical Theory of Reliability

Richard E. Barlow; Frank Proschan; Larry C. Hunter

Society for Industrial Applied Mathematics,U.S.
1996
pokkari
This monograph presents a survey of mathematical models useful in solving reliability problems. It includes a detailed discussion of life distributions corresponding to wearout and their use in determining maintenance policies, and covers important topics such as the theory of increasing (decreasing) failure rate distributions, optimum maintenance policies, and the theory of coherent systems. The emphasis throughout the book is on making minimal assumptions--and only those based on plausible physical considerations--so that the resulting mathematical deductions may be safely made about a large variety of commonly occurring reliability situations. The first part of the book is concerned with component reliability, while the second part covers system reliability, including problems that are as important today as they were in the 1960s. Mathematical reliability refers to a body of ideas, mathematical models, and methods directed toward the solution of problems in predicting, estimating, or optimizing the probability of survival, mean life, or, more generally, life distribution of components and systems. The enduring relevance of the subject of reliability and the continuing demand for a graduate-level book on this topic are the driving forces behind its republication. Mathematical Theory of Reliability now joins a growing list of volumes in SIAM's Classics series. Although contemporary reliability books are now available, few provide as mathematically rigorous a treatment of the required probability background as this one.
